3D Movie and effects
Other applications

There are different applications of 3D technology in media and it can improve communication among people.

3D Moives
3-D films became more and more successful throughout the 2000s , ended in the unprecedented success of 3-D presentations of Avatar in December 2009 and January 2010.
Gaming
Adv:
Let the players feel the events and environment of the game are real,(Bae, S., Lee, H., Park, H., Cho, H., Park, J., Kim, J. 2002, pp.251-253)
enjoy and experience more.

The game can reflect
more the real world.

The effect of the game
is more realistic.

e.g. Need for Speed: Shift
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Youtube
Youtube has a 3D channel

e.g. G-Dragon & TOP- High High MV

Do not require a 3D monitor, only need a simple 3D glasses.

Mainly in music videos or some action video.

Let the audience experience the new
type of video.
TV
Benefits:

The technology effectively increased
the entertainment value(Tam, W. James, Speranza, F., Yano, S., Shimono, K., Ono, H., 2011, pp.335) of televisions programme.

Enhancing the depth perception, sharpness, naturalness, sense of presence(reality) are the main benefits.

Problems needed to be developed:

accommodation-vergence conflict
parallax distribution
binocular mismatches
depth inconsistencies
cognitive inconsistencies(Tam, W. James, Speranza, F., Yano, S., Shimono, K., Ono, H., 2011, pp.(338-343)

THE EFFECT OF 3D technology
The 3D moive is more expensive than the 2D

Variety had a headline :
“3D stands for dollars, dollars, dollars . ”

Bernard Mendiburu (2009)

3D technology
Color Anaglyph -Glasses with colored filters
Polarization systems -Commonly used in Hong Kong Cinema
Parallax barrier -Naked eye 3D
Avatar
Color Anaglyph
The film broke several box office records and became the highest-grossing film, surpassing Titanic, which had held those records for twelve years (and was also directed by Cameron)
The first film to gross more than $2 billion
Viewed through filters of the same colour, one to each eye,it gives rise to the perception of depth
Two superimposed and laterally displaced drawings or photographs of the same scene but taken from two directions and in complementary colours (usually red and green).
Advantages of Anaglyph
Any digital projector and monitor can show anaglyphs.
Red - Cyan stereoscopic glasses are common and cheap, even can be DIY.
Can be used in comics and newspaper
Disadvantage of anaglygh
Wrong colours.-The colour will never be right as each eye is getting only part of the RGB colour range.
Wearing the glasses may cause headache to some people
Polarized 3D
This technology is widely used in Hong Kong's cinema
uses polarization glasses to restrict the light that reaches each eye
each eye sees a different image.
Produce a three-dimensional effect by projecting the same scene into both eyes, but depicted from slightly different perspectives.
Advantage of Polarized 3D
Parallax barrier
A parallax barrier is a device placed in front of an image source
allow it to show a 3D image without the need for the viewer to wear any types of glasses.
-> glassless 3D.
The device consists of a layer of material with a series of precision slits
allowing each eye to see a different set of pixels to create a sense of depth through parallax

Bernard Mendiburu (2009)
An increasing number of
alternative 3D contents
in theaters
The huge success of AVATAR last year
resulted in a rapid increase of 3D screens in theaters
12 feature film made in 3D were released in 2009 and more than 24 3D films are slated for released in 2010

The worldwide
success of AVATAR
has demonstrated
that audience are
willing to
pay a premium
for better 3D
experience
A new media experience in 3D movies.

Yun, J. (2010)
Yun, J. (2010)
produces a full-color image that is considerably more comfortable to watch (Vs Anaglyph)
Disadv:

Playing long time may feel dizzy,
headache and visual discomfort(Tam W. J.
, Speranza, F., Yano, S., Shimono, K.,
Ono, H., 2011, pp.335-336)
since 3D is an unnatural process for
the brain to interpret.

The arrival of the 3D experience in the
home world is just around the
corner.

The evolution of stereoscopic 3D effects in feature animation extends its power to a
more popular form of media.
Disadvantage of Polarized 3D
Require special set up that uses two projectors廿
The polarized filters would make the image dimmer which sometimes distracting
Advantages of Parallax barrier
Can be implemented into mobile device
Produce a clear image
Disadvantages of Parallax barrier
The viewer must be positioned in a well-defined spot to experience the 3D effect
Basic principle of 3D
-Faking the brain

-When viewing a object, the brain interprets what the left and right eyes see to assess the relative distances from the viewer, and the depth dimension

-3D technology is the production of the illusion of depth in a photograph, movie, or other two-dimensional image by presenting a slightly different image to each eye.

Common types of 3D technology
High occurrence of symptoms reported by spectators during and after the vision of a 3D movie in a cinema

When compare to the 2D moives, 3D moives are more likely give rise to the visual discomforts
