INDEX CARD #3 King Edward and the Godwins

The Godwins were the most powerful family in Anglo-Saxon England
The family held three of the four main earldoms
they further strengthened their position by marriages to powerful families and people e.g. King Edward was married to Edith Godwin, Harold was married to Edith of Mercia
King Edward tried to free himself of them by exiling them but they returned with a huge fleet!
in 1064/65 Earl Harold was sent on an embassy to Normandy - we don't know why
whilst there he was captured by the French and released by WIlliam. We know he swore an oath to WIlliam but we dont know what it was!
the embassy tells us the King Edward trusted Harold but it later enabled Duke William to claim Harold was an 'Oath-breaker'
In 1065 a revolt removed Earl Tostig from his earldom (Northumbria). His brother Harold did not support him. The revolt was about abuse of power and taxes.

Q6 Harold was sent to Normandy by King Edward in 1064/5:

a. We don't know why!
b. Harold was taken prison by a French nobleman
c. Duke William released him
d. Harold swore a non-serious oath to William
Q7 The embassy was important because:

a) it shows Edward trusted harold
b) William claimed it was to make William King of England after Edward
c) Harold needed a holiday
d) William claimed Harold broke his oath when he became King in 1066
Q8 The revolt against Tostig was started by:

a) Ceorls
b) Slaves
c) Thegns
d) The King
Q9 Harold did not support his brother because :

a) He wanted to be King himself
b) Edward did not have long to live
c) Harold wanted to sow he could act for the good of the country not his family
d) Harold hated Tostig
Q10 Reasons for the revolt included:

a) Tostig was too harsh punishing lawbreaking
b) Tostig abused his power by threatening Thegns
