See Wrath
Love Mercy
Romans 9:19-23
1. God is the Creator and has authority over all of creation.

2. In order that we might see a fuller range of God’s attributes.

3. In order that we might see God’s wrath and power to have deeper appreciation for His mercy and glory.

“Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?”

Ephesians 1:3-6

“3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.”
1. Every spiritual goodness in Christ
2. Sanctifies and changes us
3. Secures us as His chosen children
4. Makes us part of His happy people
Wrath is God "giving you up"
Romans 1:18
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.”
He gives them up to the lusts of their hearts (vs. 24)

He gives them up to dishonorable passions (vs. 26)

He gives them up to a debased mind (vs. 28)
Wrath is being stored up for the future
Romans 2:5
“But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.”
Moral, religious, external, and hypocritical living particularly increase wrath for the day of judgment for the lost
Wrath is God's Justice Displayed
Romans 3:5
“But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.)"

Romans 4:15
“For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.”
Wrath is both Now and Then
Romans 13:4

“for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.”

Wrath is being stored up for the future
Mercy is daily increasing love
Hosea 6:4-6

“4 What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away. 5 Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth, and my judgment goes forth as the light. 6 For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.”
Mercy is a daily and moment by moment embracing of the life and love we have in Christ that lasts all day as we die all day every day.
Wrath is God's Justice Displayed
Mercy is God's Grace in Salvation
“It was mercy that God would give Israel rain, and bread to the full, and peace, and victory over their enemies—but it was a greater mercy that God would be their God. To have health is a mercy—but to have Christ and salvation is a greater mercy.”
- Thomas Watson
1 John 4:10
Wrath is both Now and Then
Mercy is in the Present and the Eternal
Romans 13:5-7
“5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.”
Psalm 78: A Maskil for Generations
He passed over their first-born because of His blood

He split the waters for them to pass through safely

He led them with a cloud and fire

He split rocks to bring out water

He brought bread from Heaven

He brought quail for meat

He led them to a promised land
