What is an Altered Book?
Mixed Media
Creating a Theme
The term "mixed media" refers to a work of art that has been made with more than one material.
A theme is a central idea or message conveyed by a work of art.
Found objects are natural or man-made material that has been found by an artist and incorporated into a work of art.
The subject matter of these found objects can be used to support your theme.
An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and/or meaning.
The combination of painting media such as oil, acrylic and watercolor in a single work of art is an example of mixed media.
Theme Examples:
All About Me
Fairy Tales and Folklore
Kings and Queens
Magical Creatures
Super Heroes
Time Travel
Where I Live
Using Found Objects in your Altered Books

Altered Book Techniques
Carving a niche
Creating a pocket
An altered book artist takes a book and cuts, tears, glues, burns, folds, paints, adds to, collages, rebinds, gold-leafs, creates pop-ups, rubber-stamps, drills, bolts, and/or be-ribbons it. The artist may add pockets and niches to hold pictures, drawings, or three-dimensional objects.
Round Robin
An altered book round robin is an activity in which two or more altered book artists agree to do artwork in each other's books.

Most altered books received in round robins have some sort of rules included by the book’s originator, that tell their likes and dislikes, and give some minimal guidance about the theme of the book.

Each artists participating in the round robin creates one or more spreads in the altered book and then passes it to the next person. Eventually you will get your altered book back depending on how many are participating in the round robin.
Preparing Books for Altering
An important step to consider before altering your book is to remove about 50% of the pages to reduce the strain on the binding.
