Transcript of Fracking
Large amounts of water, sand, and chemicals are blasted into a well to break-up the rock which allows oil be retrieved easily.
Many environmental organizations are criticizing the oil and natural gas industries because the enviromentalists say fracking is seriously hurting the environment.
But is it? Why Frack? Fracking makes oil wells more productive.
Without hydraulic fracturing, the natural gas and oil found in deep shale formations would unrecoverable and not profitable. Why Stop Fracking? Many environmentalists claim fracking can:
Poison nearby wells due to the harsh chemicals used to frack.
Fracking uses millions of gallons of water per frack, wasting valuable freshwater supplies. Fighting Back Natural gas titan Chesapeake Energy has answered such accusations. Chesapeake's website, www.hydraulicfracturing.com, says that the highest precautions are in place to protect groundwater from contamination. Current Events of Fracking Fracking is a highly debated topic in America. In the state of New York, Gov. Andrew Coumo is debating whether or not to lift the moratorium on fracking or to ban fracking all together in the state.
To frack or not to frack is a tough choice because if the governor lifts the ban, he could lose the support of environmentalists, but if the ban isn't lifted, he could be seen as unsupportive of economic growth. Safe? There is no doubt there are dangers of fracking. However, the safe use of fracking is sure to be executed correctly and effectively by permits issued by the state.
The infamous effects of fracking, such as contaminating ground water, are deemed extremely low by the Ground Water Protection Council (GWPC).
Due to the minimal chances of contamination and the multitude of benefits given to the country and its people, fracking, under supervision, should be allowed. Fracking keeps heating and cooling costs low. Fracking has the potential to reduce the United States reliance on foreign fuel.
Fracking can significantly reduce the national carbon dioxide emissions. Fracking can "awaken" small rural towns due to productive oil wells. In effect, the towns are experiencing:
higher costs of living
much noisier living situations. Many casings of
cement are used
contamination. On average, wells are located almost 1.5 miles below the earth’s surface. These depths and formations make the potential for migration into freshwater zones a near scientific impossibility. Chesapeake also answered accusations of the extremely high water usage and explained that the amount of water used to frack one well (approx. 4.5 million gallons) is the same amount of water used by New York City in 6.3 minutes or a golf course in 22.5 days.
