“without question the admission of ladies must be restrained”.
Walter Gropius

The photomontage "Mit allen zehn Fingern" (With all 10 Fingers) picks up on the topic of the relationship between the genders at the Bauhaus. It depicts a young, modern woman who nevertheless appears to be the marionette of an old, traditionally dressed man.

ARCHITECT
1904
“Architects, painters, sculptors, we must
all return to crafts! For there is no
such thing as professional art....

Eileen Gray
REALITY
EXPECTATIONS
- Progressive collaboration between men and women

- New and innovative lifestyles

- Question traditional values and norms of the conservative society

- Question the ideas of art and design for a new world of function
And was the Bauhaus ever the haven for female emancipation that they had hoped and that we might expect?
Did the Bauhaus women receive fair recognition for their role in the school, and for their works?

Why is it the Bauhaus boys have become household names, yet we hear little of the women who helped build the Bauhaus reputation?
