Transcript of Punctuating Dialogue

"Moooooove on to better writing" Writing with dialogue Using the exact words that someone would say Technically, it is a conversation... I don’t get it, Shrek. Why don’t you pull some of that ogre stuff? You know, throttle him, lay siege to his fortress, grind his bones to make your bread. You know, the whole ogre trick.

I know what. Maybe I could have decapitated an entire village, and put their heads on a plate. Got a knife, cut open their spleen and drink their fluids. Does that sound good to you?

Ahhh. No, not really, no.
Conversation between Shrek and Donkey What's missing? Punctuation, of course How do you punctuate dialogue? Put quotation marks " " at the beginning and end of the words that someone says Example

"I don’t get it, Shrek. Why don’t you pull some of that ogre stuff?"

Tell who said the quote either before, in the middle or after the quote

The comma and period placement will change depending on where you identify the speaker At the Beginning

Shrek responded, "I know what, maybe I could have decapitated an entire village, and put their heads on a plate."

In the Middle

"I know what," Shrek responded, "maybe I could have decapitated an entire village, and put their heads on a plate."

At the End

"I know what, maybe I could have decapitated an entire village, and put their heads on a plate," Shrek responded.
You try! Punctuate the text below in your notes:

Shrek asked Does that sound good to you?

Ahhh. Donkey said No, not really, no. If speaker identified at end, use a comma/question mark/exclamation point - never a period inside the quotes. Example

"Shrek is pretty cool," said Mr. Owens.

"Shrek is awesome!" said Miss Miller.

"What is Shrek?" asked Mrs. Martin. Does it look like this?

Shrek asked, "Does that sound good to you?"

"Ahhh," Donkey said. "No, not really, no." One more thing... Start a new paragraph each time a new person speaks "I don’t get it, Shrek," Donkey questioned. "Why don’t you pull some of that ogre stuff? You know, throttle him, lay siege to his fortress, grind his bones to make your bread. You know, the whole ogre trick."

Shrek responded, "I know what. Maybe I could have decapitated an entire village, and put their heads on a plate. Got a knife, cut open their spleen and drink their fluids. Does that sound good to you?"

"Ahhh. No, not really, no," Donkey replied.
