Week 4: Aerospace Engineering
Our plan for this project was to split up the work to 3 pairs: plane, rocket, and glider.
Dymier and Rick built the rockets
Tiana and Kylie worked on the glider
Goutham and Leo built the plane
When someone was finished with their work, they would help others to complete their work.
Our Plan
The Process: Rockets
For the plane, Leo and Goutham followed the instructions to construct a flying plane. They traced out pieces of foam before cutting them out, then they stuck the pieces together. It was hard for them because sometimes the glue would burn the foam. After that, Leo and Goutham placed the motors that controlled the plane. At the end it flew really well.
The Process: Plane
Tiana and Kylie worked on the glilder. In total, 3 gliders were built: the foam, the balsawood, and the smaller model. The final model was built out of foam and balsa wood. Aerodynamics was used to allow the glider to glide properly.

Engineering Principles
In this project, we used engineering principles related to aerospace engineering such as:
Center of Gravity
Center of Pressure
We also used mechanical engineering to build our rockets
Successes and Obstacles
On the day of the final project, our water bottle rocket worked and the glider successfully detached.
Our plane flew momentarily and worked pretty well until it broke!
The plane had many problems and the foam used melted very easily when heat was applied
We had to test/tweak the glider many times in order to get to glider to work the way we liked
Next Steps to Improve This Project
If we could further improve this project, we would work on the airplane more and see what was wrong with the motor. On the day of the final flight, our airplane didn't work because the motor had some resistance and therefore didn't work properly.
Lessons Learned
Through this project, we learned we should never trust Youtube because they make sucky planes. We also learned that when making a rocket, THERE SHOULD BE NO HOLES IN ROCKET BETWEEN THE BATTERIES AND THE WATER CHAMBER.
If We Could Start Over....
If we could redo this project, we would
Try to be more careful when working with the airplane
Split up our group more evenly and compromise what we want for the team
We would try be more thoughtful and spend more time thinking of a bottle rocket design
Overcoming Obstacles
We realized that the hot glue was so HOT that it was melting holes into the foam. Therefore, we learned to make sure the glue was on the low setting before using the gun.

At first the glider wasn't really gliding and it was nosediving into the ground. Therefore we built 3 different models and ended up combining the foam "body" and the balsa wood wings.
Before the rocket was built, Rick, Dymier, and Goutham used a software from NASA's website to pick the best design for the rocket. After we agreed on a design, Dymier and Rick started building the rockets. Dymier worked on the model rocket, and Rick built the bottle rocket. Making the parachute was especially tricky
