Summary
In northern Austin there lived the Smothers family. The Smothers family consisted of John Smothers, his wife, himself, their little daughter, five years of age, and her parents. One night their little girl became very sick, so the father hurried to down town to get some medicine, but he never returned. Time past by and the little girl got better and she grew up becoming a woman. The mother got married again and later on so did the little girl. The little girl also had a daughter and one night her little girl got very sick, and her husband said he is going to go get medicine from down town. She did not let him go though because she was afraid he would not come back. Days went by and then reached the day, anniversary that her father had disappeared. the girls husband once more suggested he should go get medicine for their very ill 5 year old daughter, but she still refused. Then on that same night there was a knock at the door and when they opened it they saw it was her father with the medicine. He gave it to her sick daughter and she instantly felt better. He said "sorry I was a little late as I waited for a street car".

The story begins by being introduced to the Smothers family. And one night their little girl is sick. Then the father rushed down town to bring home medicine for his five year old ,little girl. The father left and never came back.

Climax & Falling Action
Time went by and the little girl recovered from her illness. And the mother got married again. Also the little girl got older and got married too. She had a daughter and one night when she was five years old she became very sick. The "little girl's" husband suggested he should go bring medicine from down town but she did not let him go because she was afraid he would disappear just like her father did.
Setting & Characters
This story takes place in northern Austin where The Smothers family lived and consisted of John Smothers, his wife, himself, their little daughter, five years of age, and her parents.
Denouement
Their 5 year old daughter was getting more ill and she needed medicine. And then reached the anniversary that her father had disappeared. Later that night there was a knock on the door and when they opened it it was the "little girl's" father. He had brought the medicine. He gave it to her sick daughter and she instantly felt better. He said "sorry I was a little late as I waited for a street car".
Theme
The theme of this story was strange and it said in a way to always have faith that something will return, and just be patient even if it takes forever.
Symbolism
The father symbolized the things that care for us.
The little girl symbolized what parents do anything for even if it takes them forever.
The medicine symbolized patience.
Irony
In this story situational irony takes place because it was a strange situation that when the girls daughter turned five the father finally made it back home with the medicine.
Author Biography
O. Henry (William Sydney Porter): was an American writer.
His short stories were well known for their wordplay and clever twist endings.
He was born on September 11, 1862 in Greensboro, NC and died on June 5, 1910 in New York City, NY.
He had many movies such as Alias Jimmy Valentine, O. Henry's Full House, Raincoat, and more.
