Transcript of Classifying Instruments....World Music Style!

So if not Western classification, then what???
Since the Western classifcation will not work for all world music instruments, musicologists have created a different system of classifcation for instruments called Sachs-Hornbostel system!........ try saying that 5 times fast....

Chordophones are defined as having one or more strings stretched between two points and soundis produced when a string vibrates. I think thats easy enough to understand....if it has strings, its probably a chordophone.
Aerophones are defined as those instruments that produce sound through the direct vibration of air. So what the heck does that mean?? Its simple, you are using your lungs to direct air into the instrument to produce a sound!
Classifying Instruments....World Music Style!
In Western music, we have our classification of instruments which are catergorized into four different families- brass, woodwind, strings and percussion. However......this does not work in for all the different kinds of instruments in the world! Here is why.......
Idiopones are definedas instruments that produce sound through the instrument itself vibrating. Practically anything can be considered an idiophone, from bottles falling down to slamming doors, to even change in your pocket.
Not all instruments will fit into the western catergories. For an example, if someone were to play a conch shell, would they say it is a woodwind or brasswind??......incase you are wonder....yes people do perform on the conch shell. Below is a picture of Hawaiian men performing a ceremony with conches!!
Sachs-Hornbostel System
In the Sachs-Hornbostel system, there are 4 classifications of instruments and they are as follows: aerophones, chordophones, idiophones, and membranophones........ok, well I lied, there are actually 5 with the rise of technology! Musicologist now recognize electrophones as a fifth category! However, we will only be discussing the original 4.
Lets watch an example of an aerophone instrument
Now its time for you to list a few examples you can think of that would fit the aerophone classification!
Lets watch an example of a chordophone!
Now its time for you to list your examples of chordophones!
Its video time!
Now its time for you, yet again, to write down your examples of idiophones!
Last but not least......
Membranophones are definded as havingavibratingmembrane, usually animalskin, that is stretched over a frame. This is the catergories that various drums are placed into! One question....is the eardrum considered a membranophone??? Extra credit for those who can find the answer to that one!
Now lets watch an example of a membranophone!
Now.......I think you know what to do!
Now not one of you should have a single doubt on these categories of instruments! Now lets put your newly acquired knowledge to the test!
