how it started
People from England came to America because they wanted to practice their own religion. They came on a boat called the Mayflower. The
boat
had about 100 people on it.
These people were called the
Pilgrims
.
Many Pilgrims
died
during the first winter.They did not know how to hunt, fish, or grow food very well.
When they had a very good
harvest
, they had a
feast
. This was the first Thanksgiving, in the year 1621.
Thanksgiving is a day where we gives thanks for everything they have.
We
gather
with family and friends to spend time together.
Thanksgiving is famous because it is a big meal. We have many traditional dishes for this day.
turkey
cranberry sauce
stuffing
green bean casserole
mashed potatoes and gravy
We watch professional American football on television.
Many friends and family also play football together before eating.
Macy's Thanksgiving Day
Parade
People watch it on television during the morning.

It's dangerous!
They got help from the Native Americans.
The most famous one was Squanto. He is of the
Wampanoag
tribe
.
It occurs on the 4th Thursday of November. Most people do not go to school and work.
It did not become an official holiday until 1863.

Many people use this day to buy gifts because Christmas is the next big holiday!!!

Stores open early on Friday morning and have big sales.
