Why We Fight: A Reaction
What did the film portray?
How did US soldiers react?
What is your reaction?
Genocide
The term "genocide" did not exist before 1944.
It is a very specific term, referring to violent crimes committed against groups with the intent to destroy the existence of the group.
Holocaust
Destruction or slaughter on a mass scale, esp. caused by fire or nuclear war: "a nuclear holocaust".
The mass murder of Jews under the German Nazi regime during the period 1941–45.
Using your knowledge of history and what we have discussed during WWII, hypothesize as to how the Holocaust occurred.
How Did the Holocaust Happen?
For the duration of this unit, please use a seperate part of your notebook.

You will be asked to write a number of reactions, thoughts, and ideas down that you will turn in at the end of the unit.

Propaganda
The Nazi party used propaganda to promote the idea that Jews and other groups of individuals (gypsies, immigrants) were responsible for Germany's economic woes
Joseph Goebbels was placed in charge of the Propaganda Ministry
The Star of David
Many groups and people were persecuted during the Holocaust, not just the Jews. The Nazi party wanted a 'master race' and proved to not stop at anything to rid their country of people they believed did not contribute to the ideal of the master race. These people were marked and tagged by specific colours which included:
- Yellow star of David marked the Jews
- Pink triangle marked gay men
- Purple triangle marked Jehovah witnesses
- Black triangle marked Gypsies/asocial
- Red triangle marked political prisoners
- Green triangle marked criminals

Even more people, such as the mentally and physically disabled were killed off for having a 'life unworthy of life'.
The idea that there was a 'master race' of people of Northern European descent.

Heinrich Himmler (commander of the SS) was placed in charge of Hitler's Final Solution, which aimed to rid Germany (and all of Europe) of those who deviated from the Aryan race.

Very poor conditions; very tough to live

Used to organize Jews before deportation and extermination
Following the Warsaw Uprising, they were quickly evacuated into different concentration camps throughout Europe

After time in the ghettos, the Gestapo began deporting Jews and other groups of people to concentration camps all over Europe.

"Dachau, 1933 - 1945, will stand for all time as one of history's most gruesome symbols of inhumanity. There our troops found sights, sounds and stenches beyond belief, cruelties so enormous as to be incomprehensible to the normal mind. Dachau and death were synonymous." William W. Quinn, 7th US Army
