The Invention of The Light Bulb
By: Selena and Samantha

How did it all start?
In the process of creating the very first light bulb ever known there were many different individuals who contributed and made many adjustments to the very first original light bulb. As today we have a much more improved light bulb then what we had in the past
Thomas Edison is the individual usually credited with the invention of the incandescent light bulb
In 1879 Thomas Edison created the first light bulb. This was many years after Alessandro Volta developed the first actual method of creating electricity called the voltaic pile.

In 1879, Thomas Edison found that a carbon filament in an oxygen-free bulb glowed but it did not stay lit for 40 hours. He finally produced a bulb that could glow for 1200 hours made from bamboo.
In the year of 1881, Lewis Howard Latimer went back to using the carbon filament inside the light bulb. Latimer worked with Thomas Edison as the two worked together as a team called “Edison’s Pioneers”.
Therefore altogether the people to acknowledge in the creation of this useful resource the light bulb are the individuals below
Thomas Edison
Alessandro Volta
Willis R. Whitney
William David Coolidge
In the year of 1903, a man named Willis R. Whitney invented a way so that the filament inside the bulb wouldn’t get darker as it glowed

Shortly after in 1910, William David Coolidge invented a new filament which lasted even longer than the older filament that Willis R. Whitney improved in 1903.

How it became such a popular and useful resource now a days?
Now a days the light bulb is used everywhere to homes, offices, stores, outdoors and more.
The next big change in the incandescent bulb came with the invention of the tungsten filament by European inventors in 1904. These new tungsten filament bulbs lasted longer and had a brighter light compared to the carbon filament bulbs. In 1913, Irving Langmuir figured out that placing an iner gas like nitrogen inside the bulb doubled its efficiency
Not only do we have the simpler incandescent light bulb that was the very first light bulb created but we now have so many other kinds of light bulbs as well
Therefore in our generation now we have seen many kinds of lights bulbs and certainly with the improvement of all them many are more efficient then others. For example it is known that that fluorescent light bulb is 4 to 6 times more energy efficient than the traditional incandescent light bulb.
The Impact of the Light Bulb on Society
Work hours: The Light Bulb increased nighttime productivity by making it easier for workers to see at night. Also the Light Bulb helped workers to see potential workplace hazards. While safety standards were poor in the late 1800s, the light bulb did help make moderate improvements.

Home :Candles and oil-based lamps were dangerous fire hazards, leading to many yearly deaths. The light bulb made for a safer nighttime home environment. It also helped people to perform activities at night in the house like cleaning and more.

Safety: Light bulbs have also helped people to move and travel safely into the dark areas at night
Yes Thomas Edison is also one of the inventors. However in 1850 an English chemist named Joseph Swan started with the creation of the light bulb. He found that using a carbon paper filament worked well but unfortunately it burned up too quickly.

How it became such a popular and useful resource now a days?
Therefore that's why the light bulb is to be considered one of best inventions of all time!
