  1. Welcome everyone.
  2. Thank you for joining me today.
  3. I'm Jenelle Visser, a student of Royal Roads University Social
  4. entrepreneurship class.
  5. I would like to first acknowledge that I am tuning
  6. in today from the traditional unseated lands of the musk
  7. William Squamish and slobber tooth First Nations.
  8. My pitch is directed towards members of counselling networks and
  9. associations who I hope to partner with in developing my
  10. enterprise. So, to my fellow classmates, please try to put
  11. yourself in the mind of a counselor to set the
  12. scene first.
  13. Some real talk.
  14. We've all been through some shit.
  15. Excuse the language, but as counselors, I'm sure you know
  16. this is true better than anyone.
  17. Over the last pandemic year, as covid cases have been
  18. on the rise, our mental health as a society has
  19. been doing the opposite.
  20. In a recent survey, over half of Canadians said they're
  21. feeling increased stress or anxiety as a result of COVID
  22. 19. After a year of pandemic stats, Canada also found
  23. that 24% of Canadians in 2020 reported poor or fair
  24. mental health, which is a huge increase from 8% 2
  25. years prior, and there are concerns that there will not
  26. be enough mental health resources to meet the demand.
  27. Steven Taylor, who is a clinical psychologist and professor at
  28. UBC, said that while many people may bounce back from
  29. the mental toll of lockdown, so self isolation and uncertainty,
  30. many more may develop lingering problems.
  31. And we don't have mental health resources for managing on
  32. that scale.
  33. So while your industry as counselors has been growing this
  34. last year, I work in the tourism industry, which means
  35. my industry has effectively been in hibernation.
  36. And while I have undoubtedly baked a lot of bread
  37. and watched a lot of Netflix, I have also spent
  38. much of my time building up this idea of how
  39. it can help by doing what I do best and
  40. have built my career on which is taking people on
  41. adventures. So my idea is to create a tour company
  42. based in British Columbia that is developed intentionally with this
  43. in mind, to design travel experiences that help people get
  44. away from it all while also helping them learn how
  45. to get through it all.
  46. To give them a jump start on the journey to
  47. better mental health and to go home after the trip
  48. with a fresh perspective.
  49. So before I get too much into the details, I
  50. want to let you know why you're here.
  51. I want to partner with members of counselling networks and
  52. associations like you and like yours for a few key
  53. reasons. First, to give our travelers a clear path to
  54. post trip follow up in a structured counseling setting if
  55. they decide to continue their healing journey alongside a professional
  56. after the trip.
  57. And secondly, if you believe in our mission, you might
  58. also know some of your clients for whom this type
  59. of experience would be particularly helpful.
  60. And I hope you would consider recommending us to them.
  61. And finally, when the time is right, we will be
  62. needing counselors to come along our trips as counseling co
  63. guides to help facilitate our programs.
  64. So I hope you would consider being one of them.
  65. So who is going to come on these tours?
  66. Our market research has confirmed there is a growing market
  67. for adventure, uh, wellness travel, meaningful travel experiences that pair
  68. adventure and wellness.
  69. And while this travel is considered high yield tourism, which
  70. means these travelers are willing and able to spend on
  71. the experience.
  72. For example, domestic wellness travelers spent 178% more on average
  73. than the average domestic traveler.
  74. This becomes important for our model, as I'll explain in
  75. a little bit.
  76. And finally, much of the growing market for adventure wellness
  77. is among women in particular the solo female traveler.
  78. With this in mind, we asked ourselves, Who among our
  79. mostly female adventure wellness travelers will these experiences helped the
  80. most? The answer, after consultation with therapists like yourselves, is
  81. people in transition.
  82. So people struggling with our relationship ending grieving the loss
  83. of a loved one dealing with a career transition and
  84. the pandemic has only thrust more people into transition.
  85. A divorce rates have spiked in Canada since the onset
  86. of the pandemic.
  87. Health care workers in particular, are suffering from burnout.
  88. And a lot of people are just struggling with heightened
  89. anxiety and depression while adjusting to this quote unquote new
  90. normal. Now it occurs to me that some of those
  91. struggling with transition maybe most benefited by this experience, but
  92. they may also be least likely able to afford it.
  93. I'm thinking of one of the most difficult statistics to
  94. come out of the pandemic, which is the rise of
  95. domestic violence in lockdown.
  96. So how amazing would it be to be able to
  97. send women who have escaped a violent situation and are
  98. trying to figure out how to start again on a
  99. trip like this?
  100. But who is going to be able to pay for
  101. that? That's why, as part of the foundation of our
  102. business model, we're planning to capitalize on the general high
  103. Spend target market of wellness travelers to put a percentage
  104. of every ticket sale into a sliding scale fund so
  105. that we will be able to offer certain folks like
  106. these women a lower rate to help make sure no
  107. one who needs to be on our bus gets left
  108. behind. So let's talk about the trips.
  109. What are these trips going to look like?
  110. First of all, the tour design, we're bringing together principles
  111. of adventure therapy, eco therapy and wellness.
  112. In every aspect of our trip itineraries, we want to
  113. have an adventure therapy element.
  114. So getting people outside, putting them in challenging situations in
  115. order to help them build up self esteem and have
  116. the physical experience of overcoming something, I'm talking challenge courses,
  117. surf lessons, maybe even bungee jumping, then eco therapy.
  118. Psychotherapy is growing field, showing the mental health benefits of
  119. just getting outside into nature.
  120. And we are going to be finding some beautiful nature
  121. for our groups on these trips and NBC.
  122. It's not hard to do.
  123. And finally, the concepts from the field of wellness I'm
  124. talking, relaxing in hot springs, guided meditation, yoga on the
  125. beach during sunrise.
  126. So who's thinking, When do we leave?
  127. We're not stopping it, simply taking people to beautiful places
  128. to do some nice activities.
  129. We also plan to develop intentional, therapeutically informed programming to
  130. take place over the course of the trip in a
  131. workshop format, I will be working with clinical therapists and
  132. experts in adventure therapy to develop this programming and figure
  133. out the best and most natural way to work it
  134. into the trips.
  135. We want to send people home not just with the
  136. epic instant photos, but also with some tools to help
  137. them keep doing the important inner work that they've started
  138. on our trips.
  139. And maybe some of them will come to some of
  140. you to continue that journey and the format of the
  141. trips most of the adventure therapy and wellness tourism out
  142. there right now, particularly in BC.
  143. A single location based What that means is you go
  144. to one place on a wellness retreat or to a
  145. challenge course to do adventure therapy.
  146. But what we want to do is slightly different.
  147. We want to take a small group of travelers on
  148. a road trip.
  149. Essentially, we believe that the magic of the group has
  150. a role to play in this type of experience.
  151. And actually, market research has shown that particularly right now
  152. in the wake of the pandemic and the social isolation
  153. that we've had to endure many of our adventure wellness
  154. travelers. While they want to book a trip on their
  155. own, they don't necessarily want to be alone when travelling.
  156. They want to be in a group of like minded
  157. travellers, so we're putting them in a group with experienced
  158. and compassionate and highly trained guides to help facilitate that
  159. experience. And we want to do it not just in
  160. one place, but on the way because, as the saying
  161. goes, it's not about the journey but the destination.
  162. And finally we're also considering having some trips particularly just
  163. for women.
  164. Uh, for those travelers who may feel more comfortable doing
  165. this in a female lead female only environment Mhm.
  166. So I hope that gives you a bit of a
  167. picture of what we're planning to review.
  168. What we're asking for you to do is to partner
  169. with us as an organization first, to provide a streamlined
  170. way for our travelers to seek poster follow up with
  171. you in a professional counseling setting, uh, second, to recommend
  172. us to your clients if you have particular clients that
  173. you feel would really benefit from this experience and finally,
  174. that you, as an individual, might consider joining our roster
  175. of counseling co guides when we scale up in the
  176. future. So I want to leave you with some of
  177. our beautiful destinations that we have in development as a
  178. little bit of flatter for dreams as you go.
  179. And to thank you so much for your time.
  180. Here are a few references to leave you with, and
  181. finally I invite you to check out our website, and
  182. if you have any comments, please just leave them in
  183. the in the foreign post below, and I'd be happy
  184. to respond to them.
  185. Thank you so much for your time
