00:01 - 00:03
Hello everyone.
00:03 - 00:06
I am Technical sergeant Michael board with the 48 logistics readiness
00:06 - 00:10
squadron and today I'll be talking to you about organizational culture.
00:13 - 00:16
This is a quick overview of everything we'll be touching on today.
00:17 - 00:22
What is organizational culture to four key points healthy and unhealthy cultures
00:22 - 00:25
and the importance of having a healthy culture in the workspace.
00:28 - 00:29
So what is the organizational culture?
00:31 - 00:34
So it's not one clear set definition.
00:34 - 00:35
My definition might be different from yours
00:35 - 00:37
and yours might be different from theirs.
00:37 - 00:41
However, I defined it as a collection of ideas, values,
00:41 - 00:44
morals and principles that defines the goals
00:44 - 00:46
and standards for any particular organization.
00:47 - 00:49
These components together
00:49 - 00:52
will help give your work sending identity.
00:52 - 00:55
For instance, if you're a war driven person
00:56 - 01:01
then so in supply we had these W W. E. Championship belts for our monthly awards.
01:02 - 01:07
If I was big on that then I will push everybody to do what they gotta do,
01:07 - 01:08
do volunteer work.
01:09 - 01:11
Uh make sure you know you're killing on the job so we can
01:11 - 01:14
get these awards so I can present them to let everybody know,
01:14 - 01:15
you know,
01:15 - 01:17
we were running things and supply so
01:18 - 01:19
stuff like that.
01:21 - 01:23
Four key points I mentioned earlier our trust,
01:23 - 01:26
unconscious bias shaping the organizational culture
01:27 - 01:28
and commitment.
01:31 - 01:35
So unconscious bias is social stereotypes that naturally occur
01:36 - 01:40
when you normally hear bias, you probably think of something that is negative
01:41 - 01:44
but not all biases are negative but also positive ones too.
01:45 - 01:50
The way that we can help eliminate biases from the work center is,
01:50 - 01:53
but I understand that we all have unconscious bias except that you
01:53 - 01:58
have it and learn how to detach that bias from yourself.
01:58 - 02:00
So you can create a fair atmosphere for everyone.
02:00 - 02:04
one bias. I recently found out that I had was
02:05 - 02:07
when I came to lake and he uh
02:07 - 02:08
well since I've been living here,
02:09 - 02:11
I've noticed that the females are typically the top dogs.
02:12 - 02:15
When my first section, we had an airman,
02:15 - 02:18
she won beat easy and she was the chairman of the year.
02:18 - 02:22
The next section, we had another female who you know,
02:22 - 02:27
winning beat easy and out of my current section we have a staff sergeant
02:27 - 02:32
who is the heart and soul of our section, she leaves training,
02:32 - 02:35
she's the go to person for maintenance and for us as well.
02:35 - 02:40
So I grew that bias to say that okay female,
02:40 - 02:43
typically the top dog which doesn't always work out,
02:44 - 02:48
but that bias has been built over my short period of time here at Lakenheath.
02:52 - 02:54
Next topic is trust.
02:54 - 02:58
Uh D. J. Keller would say this is a major key.
02:58 - 03:00
Trust is super big
03:01 - 03:03
in order to have somebody build trust in.
03:03 - 03:06
You have to be able to take accountability whenever you do wrong.
03:07 - 03:09
So if something doesn't pan out like you wanted to
03:10 - 03:12
say, you know what it's my fault,
03:13 - 03:16
you know, we'll work on getting it better, we'll work on it,
03:16 - 03:19
make some tweaks so we can have a better outcome,
03:19 - 03:21
transparency is huge as well.
03:22 - 03:25
Being transparent with your subordinates and your leaders as well
03:25 - 03:30
helps create that trustworthiness that you're not hiding anything,
03:30 - 03:32
you're not out for self because trust goes both ways
03:33 - 03:38
as a leader had to be able to trust my subordinates and as a
03:38 - 03:40
being a true for somebody have to trust my leaders.
03:40 - 03:43
They're putting me in the right position to help my section succeed
03:44 - 03:45
for instance.
03:46 - 03:48
So my last section,
03:48 - 03:54
I just made tech and I knew how it was to be a staff had somebody kind of all over you
03:54 - 03:57
making sure you're doing everything and how they want you to do it for me.
03:57 - 04:02
I trusted my staff sergeants to to run the floor, but we didn't have a master,
04:02 - 04:03
so run the floor.
04:03 - 04:04
I trust you,
04:04 - 04:08
you do the leg work every day and you know what needs to be done.
04:08 - 04:12
I trust you to take over and make sure this, this, this warehouse run smoothly.
04:14 - 04:19
Commitment to me. This is the full buy in part of everything
04:19 - 04:23
to be committed, wanted to have trustworthy leaders
04:23 - 04:25
and that comes with
04:27 - 04:30
having transparency with all that.
04:30 - 04:30
Uh,
04:30 - 04:34
you cannot be fully committed to something that you don't
04:34 - 04:36
believe in and you don't believe in your leaders.
04:37 - 04:38
Then you're not gonna be fully committed.
04:39 - 04:41
Being passionate about your job.
04:42 - 04:45
You don't have to go gung ho about everything but knowing what you're doing,
04:45 - 04:46
do it for the right reasons
04:47 - 04:49
and also being able to take criticism as well.
04:49 - 04:51
You're not gonna do everything perfectly. So
04:51 - 04:54
having the ability to want to learn
04:54 - 04:57
will help bring everything together
04:57 - 05:02
in supply. We have a bunch of sections, so you don't necessarily see everything
05:02 - 05:04
that you're doing and how it affects the mission.
05:05 - 05:08
Me as leader. I'm here to tie those, those two ends together.
05:09 - 05:11
If I work in a store in the warehouse and I'm just
05:11 - 05:13
picking parts up and pulling parts,
05:14 - 05:16
I'm not going to see how it affects the mission,
05:16 - 05:19
how it gets to the F- 35 and 35 to do their job.
05:20 - 05:23
That's how you build that passion. That's how you build that commitment
05:25 - 05:27
shaping organizational culture.
05:28 - 05:29
Now, the tech sergeant,
05:29 - 05:31
we typically run the shop, we run the show.
05:32 - 05:35
Master Sergeant is pretty much just oversee everything, but text,
05:35 - 05:37
we make everything happen.
05:37 - 05:38
So that was the tape.
05:39 - 05:44
You have to be very welcoming to your section, to your to your to your subordinates.
05:44 - 05:47
They have to be comfortable with you but coming in to talk to you about everything.
05:47 - 05:48
Anything
05:49 - 05:51
as an airman of course,
05:51 - 05:54
we all seen stuff that was kind of weird or didn't didn't look right.
05:55 - 05:59
So now we definitely have the ability to be the change you want to see
06:00 - 06:03
if you don't want people coming in late, you don't come in late,
06:03 - 06:04
you set that standard.
06:05 - 06:08
Also having open communication, not just work related stuff.
06:08 - 06:10
You have to be able to communicate
06:10 - 06:12
with personal things too.
06:13 - 06:13
These
06:14 - 06:16
the subordinates come to you for everything.
06:16 - 06:20
So that's why I have an open door policy where you can walk into my office,
06:20 - 06:21
you can talk to me about anything
06:22 - 06:25
because I want to be there for you no matter what the situation is.
06:25 - 06:27
If any help will work or you're going to something that life
06:28 - 06:30
I'm a leader. I want to leave from the front, not the back
06:31 - 06:34
feedback is also extremely important.
06:35 - 06:37
I have to be able to tell you if you're doing something
06:37 - 06:40
incorrectly and also I'll give you a pat on the back.
06:40 - 06:43
If you're killing on the job, it goes both ways
06:47 - 06:50
healthy and unhealthy culture. Of course there's pros and cons to everything
06:51 - 06:51
with
06:51 - 06:53
with a healthy culture,
06:53 - 06:56
transparency, honesty and open mindedness are key.
06:57 - 06:59
I I spoke spoke about transparency earlier,
07:00 - 07:03
transparency goes through your whole leadership. The whole culture
07:04 - 07:06
transparency is key. Being able to
07:07 - 07:08
be like a glass.
07:09 - 07:13
I don't want, I want to be able to see you know how my job is affecting the mission.
07:13 - 07:17
And I also want you to protect me if anything comes down that I don't need to be
