  1. Hi fellow classmates, this is Jamie Durie and this is
  2. my presentation for week five for you guys to look
  3. at, for effective educational systems, E D u 7 30
  4. with William William Woods University.
  5. I said my last video, I've become a Prezi fan.
  6. So that's the format I'm going to continue to choose
  7. to use because I like it and I'm gonna give
  8. you a little history of what's going on with me
  9. in this paper and the school that I chose to
  10. reach out to to talk about whether or not it
  11. had promised or limited promise towards becoming high reliability.
  12. I was originally going to talk with the assistant principal
  13. at Rockwood Summit High School in the Rockwood School district
  14. in ST louis and through I guess crazy schedules that
  15. fell through.
  16. So I was able to do that.
  17. So this became two fold is what I end up
  18. doing. Is it dawned on me that my daughter who
  19. lives in Edmond Oklahoma works in an elementary school, she's
  20. the administrative assistance for some awesome principles administrator.
  21. So I thought, you know, I'm going to reach out
  22. to them.
  23. It's Edmond Oklahoma, but I also appreciate the perspective of
  24. another state to learn about the similarities and it also
  25. gave me a comfort feet comfort feeling as mama to
  26. my grandson that goes to that school.
  27. So what turned out to be panicked for a little
  28. while because I lost my touch with the Rockwood assistant
  29. principal turned into something that I actually really enjoy talking
  30. to a principal from another state.
  31. So the school I chose to look at was Heritage
  32. Elementary school and that's the school that you see here
  33. in this picture.
  34. And I talked through basically some of those topics that
  35. we needed to include for the purpose of this paper,
  36. which I'll talk about as we go into my different
  37. slides. Heritage Elementary is that promise or limited promise towards
  38. highly reliability status and that's exactly what the purpose of
  39. this paper is And according to Marzano, as we've learned
  40. through this class, you know, a school that's highly high
  41. reliability, monitor the effect effectiveness of critical factors within the
  42. system and they immediately take action to contain those negative
  43. effects to further any any problems that may arise.
  44. Yeah, again, I'm still learning to use Prezi a little
  45. bit. So please be patient with me.
  46. There we go.
  47. Um, so the abstract that was the purpose of my
  48. paper and a little introduction here um for schools to
  49. achieve that high reliability, there's many of those factors that
  50. we've learned about those are the number one safe, supportive,
  51. collaborative culture to the effective classroom teaching three the guaranteed
  52. and viable curriculum for the standards referenced reporting as well
  53. as competent competency based education.
  54. So those are those five areas that I had some
  55. conversations with with that building administrator, little demographics about the
  56. school, which you will see on my slide there.
  57. Heritage Elementary, it's a public school in the Edmund public
  58. school system and let me throw out a little note
  59. here. They chose to live in Edmond when they relocated
  60. Oklahoma City because of the good word, the good things
  61. they heard about the public school system so already had
  62. a good feeling about it.
  63. But after this little bit of an interview and research,
  64. I feel even better about it.
  65. Heritage Elementary is a pre K through grade five.
  66. They have 876 students currently enrolled And the school right
  67. now is offering in person and virtual learning.
  68. Obviously with the pandemic pandemic they have 147 staff members
  69. and their administration team consists of a principal and assistant
  70. principal, two Counselors and two Psychologists.
  71. And of those staff 57 are certified teachers.
  72. There are special education department has three speech teachers, a
  73. physical therapist to occupational therapists, three teachers that are uh
  74. cognitive specialists and then they also have those teachers are
  75. split between different grade levels.
  76. Yeah we want with so I talk about the method
  77. of how I gathered my information since it was a
  78. distance thing, it became a um some email correspondence and
  79. here's some questions so it kind of almost came out
  80. the discussion board but was via email um you know
  81. there's efforts being made to support the ongoing student and
  82. staff growth and development.
  83. She did indicate that that was a pretty big indicator
  84. of areas that need to make sure that they were
  85. adequate in that she did inform me that the school
  86. is considered safe and secure at all times.
  87. And they have measures in place, They have security tags,
  88. identification badges to get access to the building.
  89. They have the vessel well in place to prevent intruder
  90. or guests getting into the building prior to getting through
  91. the office for security check or safety measures.
  92. And they have a security plan in place that their
  93. facilities are reviewed annually to be sure that they're not
  94. missing some, you know, hey, have you thought about this
  95. area is not secure so that she really felt like
  96. they had a safe and secure environment.
  97. Um, some other considerations that were in the discussions.
  98. They do do, they do some character education and that's
  99. just really to try to combat some of the bullying
  100. and the to keep the mental health status of their
  101. students. Well, that's where the psychologists can come in place,
  102. come into play for them.
  103. They're also um, striving towards being a great expectations.
  104. Schools, which is where they facilitate student learning through that
  105. safe. Um, and supportive school culture.
  106. Uh, they improve the best teaching practices that they can
  107. and they involve the parents and community members, which I
  108. thought that was very valuable.
  109. We do that here at my school.
  110. We always try to make sure all stakeholders are involved.
  111. As many schools are probably feeling right now with the
  112. whole mask situation.
  113. Um, those other stakeholders outside the school have opinions whether
  114. it's for or against, but it's always important to keep
  115. those folks involved and and they feel like they have
  116. a good grasp on that.
  117. She did talk about, you know, all teachers obviously have
  118. their plan times at Heritage Elementary and they also allow
  119. for uh professional learning community time, PLC time where they
  120. meet the administrators, try to meet with the team, one
  121. of them joins those meetings um and these meetings allow
  122. them to take the time to review the student data,
  123. see what's going on, they said they're learning goals, um
  124. they reflect on teaching practice and that's big, they learn
  125. from each other through reflection, they explore resources to learn
  126. new practices, whether that be through research based studies or
  127. collaboration with each other and they apply how they plan
  128. to have to apply new learning strategies.
  129. The teachers, she indicated feel like they do see good
  130. things that come out of these PLC meetings.
  131. The teams also then examined curriculum and they determine what
  132. the students know what they want them to learn learn
  133. using that curriculum to develop their units and they're pacing
  134. guides. So, all in all, you know, I'm only two
  135. pages into the paper and presentation, I see so many
  136. similarities in this school and what I do in my
  137. current school and what my prior interview data released um
  138. steps two and three to reach, eve achieve high reliability,
  139. the examination of curriculum leads to highly effective teacher teaching
  140. and guaranteed viable curriculum.
  141. Those two, in my opinion still go hand in hand
  142. if you have um a viable curriculum you probably have
  143. effective teaching and effective teachers can make a curriculum work.
  144. Uh The principal also talked about their media centre as
  145. a resource.
  146. Uh that wasn't mentioned in my last interview and I
  147. thought that was really interesting because again comparing to where
  148. I'm at in my school are library media center is
  149. a huge resource.
  150. Mhm. Um the teachers can get supported materials for curriculum
  151. if they need something to enhance a lesson or sub
  152. supplemental material or other learning strategies, they have all those
  153. research tools there.
  154. So the media centre was proven to be a very
  155. good resource for them in their school.
  156. Um the results of my discussion is heritage elementary, it
  157. has the characteristics of being a high reliable, high reliability
  158. school. Um she did talk about when they do have
  159. things that need to be changed.
  160. It's usually not immediate if ever immediate, especially if it
  161. has to go through collaboration teams or things that just
  162. have to be discussed with other buildings or in the
  163. event that would have to be board approved but so
  164. immediate isn't necessarily the way things happen for them which
  165. would maybe take away the characteristic of being a high
  166. reliability school.
  167. However, like I said, the promise is definitely there, they
  168. have good things going on and I, as mama, I'm
  169. very comfortable having my grandson, they're in grade three, okay,
  170. they're meeting the needs of the students, they're meeting the
  171. needs of the families, they're meeting the needs of the,
  172. of the community.
  173. So as I said, it is definitely a school that
  174. could achieve high reliability status.
  175. My reference pages here.
  176. If you want to look into anything else that I
  177. researched and read up to get a little more information.
  178. One area that I needed, a little thing was character
  179. education. I want to learn a little bit more about
  180. that. Um as well as I did find an ed
  181. webcast on highly reliable schools that's listed at the very
  182. bottom of references, I found that very informational and I'm
  183. a visual or auditory learner.
  184. So it was really nice to just listen to that
  185. to pick up some points about high reliability, high reliability
  186. schools. So that's my presentation for this one again, thank
  187. you for listening.
  188. Prezi will continue to be my format whenever I present
  189. for these.
  190. I, I enjoy it.
  191. If anyone wants to try it, I encourage it, it
  192. works well and I hope everyone has a good weekend.
  193. Thank you
