  1. in this last video, I want to pay a bit
  2. more attention to the question off relationships.
  3. What we have seen in Cold Breeze work is the
  4. idea that using digital media platforms has an effect on
  5. relationships because it positions us in ah, in a particular
  6. as playing particular roles in new economies that are driven
  7. by the generation collection and analysis off big data.
  8. So using digital media places us in a particular role
  9. within the larger economic structure that governs the world.
  10. And it's in this cold.
  11. Re makes the case for taking a Marxist approach because
  12. he argues that using digital media isn't about simply satisfying
  13. our immediate once or performing everyday tasks, but is also
  14. about putting us in a particular position in relation to
  15. the economy.
  16. We are positioned essentially as workers in a particular economy
  17. on DDE.
  18. What cauldron may heart suggests that we do is that
  19. we find ways of reflecting on that position, um, and
  20. thinking about whether or not it represents what we want
  21. to be.
  22. What they're suggesting is that digital media, um, relies on
  23. a particular economic structure that places us in a particular
  24. relationship to global economies.
  25. now. So what that means is that using digital media
  26. is not simply about serving social ends.
  27. It's also about changing the way that we relate to
  28. each other.
  29. It's about changing the way we experienced itself, but also
  30. changing our relationship.
  31. And this is the point that Bane picks up where
  32. she says that the idea that digital technology is simply
  33. in Han's teaching so they take a relationship that already
  34. existed between the teacher and the student, and they just
  35. kind of make it better.
  36. Eyes pretty short.
  37. Sigh it.
  38. She argues that what we're seeing is the transformation of
  39. that relationship.
  40. So what she's basically saying is that you and I
  41. have a very different relationship to the one that we
  42. would have had 25 years ago.
  43. Um, and what's weak?
  44. What can we do about this while we can reflect
  45. where you can reflect about on it and what we
  46. can do is, we can use a thick description approach
  47. to some of the big data that called re talks
  48. about So big data is something that cauldron may har
  49. suggest, takes our wants and our needs and our work
  50. and abstracts them from the immediate concerns that drive what
  51. we do and gives them a value that's principally of
  52. value to somebody else.
  53. Um, so what we can do in regard to that
  54. is we can kind of try and provide a thick
  55. description off the digital data that we create when we're
  56. teaching and learning in this class and try and claim
  57. it back.
  58. And this is the point of the final exercise that
  59. I want us to do for our tutorial on the
  60. exercises. Are you your data?
  61. Um and the exercise is pretty easy.
  62. What I want you to do is look att evidence
  63. about how you're using how you're using Mu tal.
  64. And I want to say we'll ask you, Does that
  65. represent you?
  66. Is this a complete picture of you?
  67. You and your motivations on your needs and your and
  68. your ambitions as meaty users.
  69. So let's just get to the final exercise.
  70. Excuse me a second.
  71. We're gonna That's the data that we're going to look
  72. at. So are you your data?
  73. Um, and what I've done is I have created on
  74. exercise that I'd like you to do for next week
  75. on dhe You confined in a pdf under the week
  76. six mu tal tap on.
  77. The objective of this exercise is taking general critical theory.
  78. So the critical theory that cauldron may heart introduces too
  79. Onda applying it to a particular case Study the experience
  80. off your own digital learning on what I want to
  81. do is I want you to look at one of
  82. the two key readings and I'll tell you which one
  83. that I want you to look at individually on.
  84. I want you to practice some skills that you're going
  85. to need.
  86. Thio have mastered in your Britain assessments for this unit.
  87. First, I want you to take your select your your
  88. assigned reading, and I want you to find key quotes.
  89. Um, that summarize the most important part off the argument
  90. of that piece for you.
  91. And I want you to find that key quote.
  92. I want you to explain what it means on then
  93. what we're gonna do in the exercises were gonna use
  94. that key quote as a code, um, to apply to
  95. the evidence to make the evidence from your mood, all
  96. activities meaningful.
  97. And the purpose of this exercise is to enhance our
  98. understanding off the role that qualitative media research plays by
  99. using theory and the notion of thick description.
  100. Looking at your own experience is looking at the numbers
  101. that are attached to your experience and going well, Okay,
  102. but what are these numbers not telling us?
  103. Based on what I know about why I engage with
  104. moving and the way that I do, um and then
  105. use that to show how theory and thick description can
  106. contribute to our knowledge about how on white people use
  107. media by identifying gaps in quantitative data by interrogating the
  108. silences that air, thereby learning to question what is not
  109. there in the big data that governs so much of
  110. our lives.
  111. So if you head on now, over to the the
  112. tutorial exercise, which is under the weight week six mood,
  113. all taps that will be just right underneath where this
  114. video is, um, and do the exercise and I'll see
  115. you in class
