00:00 - 00:01
Hi, everyone.
00:01 - 00:02
My name is Laura Lewis.
00:02 - 00:05
I'm an assistant professor in the nursing department and see
00:05 - 00:07
NHS. And I'm very excited to be joining you as
00:07 - 00:08
a guest lecturer today.
00:09 - 00:10
I've had the privilege of being part of the course
00:11 - 00:13
faculty for this course in the past, so I'm very
00:13 - 00:15
happy to be to be back as a guest lecturer.
00:16 - 00:18
Um, I just wanted to give a brief background about
00:18 - 00:22
myself, My clinical experiences in oncology nursing, Um, and I'm
00:22 - 00:23
a qualitative researchers.
00:23 - 00:25
So I work mostly with adults on the autism spectrum
00:26 - 00:29
in my research that I've also applied qualitative methodology to
00:29 - 00:32
a lot of different content areas outside of that specialty
00:32 - 00:33
as well.
00:33 - 00:35
So this week, I've put together a few screen casts
00:36 - 00:38
and activity to hopefully provide you with some background about
00:39 - 00:42
the ways that we appraise and use qualitative literature, especially
00:43 - 00:44
in the clinical setting.
00:44 - 00:47
So I'll give you just an overview of some qualitative
00:47 - 00:49
methodology in general to give you some background to work
00:50 - 00:52
with, um and then look a little bit closer at
00:52 - 00:54
how we use those rapid critical appraisal tools when we're
00:55 - 00:56
looking at qualitative evidence.
00:56 - 00:59
Um, most likely for this course and for your clinical
00:59 - 01:01
practice. A lot of the PICO questions that you have
01:02 - 01:04
will be better answered through those higher levels of evidence.
01:05 - 01:06
Um, that are usually quantitative.
01:07 - 01:09
But there are some PICO questions that are better answered
01:09 - 01:10
with qualitative methodology.
01:11 - 01:13
And it's a great way to inform your practice in
01:13 - 01:14
other ways that we'll get into in some of the
01:14 - 01:15
screen casts.
01:15 - 01:18
Um, and basically, it's just really important that you're able
01:18 - 01:21
to tell just the same as with quantitative literature, what
01:21 - 01:21
makes it good?
01:22 - 01:23
What makes it bad so that you have a handle
01:24 - 01:25
on whether a study is rigorous and trustworthy.
01:26 - 01:28
Um, when you're wondering if you should use the data,
01:29 - 01:31
um, so please feel free to reach out to me.
01:31 - 01:33
I've included my email address below and on blackboard as
01:34 - 01:36
well. If you have any questions about the content, obviously
01:37 - 01:39
your course instructors are available, but I'm also happy to
01:39 - 01:44
answer any questions about qualitative methodology specifically so I hope
01:44 - 01:46
you enjoy and wishing you a great semester
