  1. hi readers.
  2. So here's the thing.
  3. When you write down an idea in your notebook or
  4. on a post it note, you really shouldn't just forget
  5. about it.
  6. You should really spend some time going back and revisiting
  7. those posts to deepen your thinking.
  8. That's a big part of fourth grade, and I've noticed
  9. one of the ways that I, deep in my thinking,
  10. is by going back and re reading certain parts so
  11. that I can grow my ideas even bigger.
  12. I wanted to try that today with you with hot
  13. day on Abbott Avenue.
  14. So you've already heard the whole story.
  15. But I want to go back and re read some
  16. parts because my initial idea was that these two girls,
  17. um, really want to be together.
  18. But they're angry.
  19. So I'm going to read this part on Page seven.
  20. Let me show that to you.
  21. This is where we are Ph.
  22. Seven right here.
  23. And it says, Hey, Miss Johnson calls out, You girls
  24. still mad forever?
  25. Kiss, she answers forever in a day.
  26. Rene ads.
  27. It's a best friend.
  28. Break up day.
  29. Um, so it's definitely, as I originally thought.
  30. The girls are super mad at each other.
  31. Um, they're acting the same way, though, to somebody who
  32. is trying to help them.
  33. And that happens a couple of other times to.
  34. So I wanted to go back and just read.
  35. Read that?
  36. So this is Page eight.
  37. I'll just show you that picture here so that, you
  38. know, come on over here and help me with my
  39. crossword puzzle.
  40. Miss Johnson says, You know how long it takes me
  41. when I don't have you all's help?
  42. No, thanks.
  43. Because she says, Not today, says Renee, not gonna never
  44. going to be friends day again.
  45. And then a similar thing happens over here.
  46. Let's see.
  47. This is Page 11 here.
  48. It iss You girls wanna help me weed?
  49. Mr Paul asks, kneeling in his flower bed.
  50. Not today, Can she says.
  51. No, thanks, says Renee.
  52. So, um, are you thinking what I'm thinking?
  53. These girls are so similar, I noticed that they are
  54. sort of finishing each other sentences.
  55. So maybe that's kind of the maybe not the reason
  56. but part of why they're angry with each other, because
  57. if you're really similar to someone, sometimes you kind of
  58. butt heads with each other.
  59. Have you ever noticed that.
  60. I wonder if that's what's happening with these girls, and
  61. if they're really similar, that would explain why they are
  62. truly friends, too.
  63. We just don't know why they're angry with each other
  64. yet. So do you see how I went back and
  65. reread a couple of places in my book?
  66. And that allowed me to grow my idea?
  67. It's not just the girls really want to be together,
  68. but they're angry.
  69. It's that they're actually so similar to each other that
  70. maybe that has something to do with why they're angry.
  71. So on our anchor chart, we want to add re
  72. read, expecting your first ideas to change.
  73. Okay, Radios.
  74. So let's try this again with a different part of
  75. the story.
  76. Um, do you remember the part of the story where
  77. they were playing jump rope?
  78. I think it waas and then the ice truck appeared,
  79. and so they all went to go get ice cream
  80. to remember that part.
  81. Okay, so what was your thinking there during that part?
  82. Just really quickly for I don't know, 30 seconds or
  83. so. Just turn and talk with your partner about what
  84. were your thinking during that part of the story.
  85. Go ahead and press pause and play when you're ready
  86. to return.
  87. Okay, so I'm guessing that many of you noticed that
  88. this is the part of the story where Kishi and
  89. Renee seem to become friends again.
  90. So let's see if we can outgrow that idea.
  91. And one way that we can grow our initial ideas
  92. even bigger is by thinking about this chart that I'd
  93. shown you before.
  94. Let's see well, we know that their feelings have, oh,
  95. change. Look at the bottom changes.
  96. Let's re read that section again with the lens in
  97. our mind of changes.
  98. How are the characters changing?
  99. So let me get to that part.
  100. All right, Here it is.
  101. Darling buys a blue ice pop Asia does to blue
  102. ice pop for Nikki and one for kitschy, but none
  103. for Renee.
  104. They're all gone.
  105. There's pictures here, Renee.
  106. You can have half of mine kiss, she says, breaking
  107. hers into Thanks.
  108. Kiss, she, Renee says, smiling shyly.
  109. You're welcome Kiss, she says, smiling back.
  110. That's a great page right there.
  111. Sure, the fat son has slipped completely behind the tall
  112. stand of pine.
  113. The girls sit on rennais porch, slurping blue ice pops
  114. and watching Buster chased the cat back under the house,
  115. watching Miss Johnson sleep with her head back, watching Mr
  116. Paul trim his hedges.
  117. Hail blue juice drips down their arms all the way
  118. down to their elbows.
  119. So what are you thinking now?
  120. Now that we've reread that section with changes as our
  121. lens are thinking books, I just went the wrong way.
  122. Let me go back.
  123. Okay, here's a chart.
  124. I'll just zoom that in for you.
  125. Here's another chart that might be helpful as you start
  126. to try to push your thinking.
  127. Um, you might say things like at first I thought
  128. that this part was talking about the girls becoming friends
  129. again. But now I think right in the beginning, it
  130. seemed like blah, blah, blah.
  131. But as I read on, it's clear that the first
  132. time I looked at it, I thought, but when I
  133. reread and dug deeper, I noticed, and in the beginning
  134. the character was blank.
  135. But as a story continued, the character changed, for example.
  136. So go ahead and think about growing your idea a
  137. bit bigger.
  138. Hit the pause button, turn and talk with your partner
  139. and then press play to begin again.
  140. So I'm wondering if any of you were thinking about
  141. sure. Both characters definitely change.
  142. Kissy and Renee definitely changed, but did anyone mention that,
  143. um, they actually shared with one another, and it was
  144. in that act of sharing, that kind of brought the
  145. walls of their pride down and brought them back together
  146. as friends, Right.
  147. Did anybody think of that?
  148. Um, what about something like this?
  149. Maybe a simple act of kindness can bring friends together,
  150. right? Or maybe even people that are disagreeing together, something
  151. like that.
  152. So the first time I looked at it, I thought
  153. that Renee and Kiss, she might never speak to each
  154. other again.
  155. But when I reread and dug a little deeper, I
  156. noticed that they were so similar to each other, and
  157. they truly did want to be friends, that it just
  158. took a simple act, like sharing an ice pop to
  159. bring them back together.
  160. So that's a way that you could use one of
  161. those prompts from the chart.
  162. Okay, One other thing I want to share with you
  163. and you have this in your notebook.
  164. A ZX?
  165. Well, is We've got sort of three stages here on
  166. your thinking.
  167. Stage one, you include just specific details from the text.
  168. Right. Um then you move on to stage two when
  169. we're kind of going up the ladder from just details
  170. in the text to growing big ideas.
  171. Stage two is where you think about Why did the
  172. author right that parter include that part?
  173. And you add your own thinking to it, Maybe even
  174. some questions.
  175. And then finally, stage three is where you really come
  176. up with a brand new idea because you build it
  177. from the specific details from the text, but also your
  178. own thinking.
  179. And what you notice that the author left you for
  180. clues. So we're putting it all together here.
  181. So today, as you go off and read, maybe spend
  182. a couple of minutes before you agreed new section in
  183. your book by going back and seeing if there's any
  184. places that you can push your thinking and grow your
  185. ideas a little bit bigger from the ones that you
  186. already have posted.
  187. So take about 20 to 25 minutes to read today
  188. and then get back together with us for the share
  189. of the end.
  190. Off you go
