00:01 - 00:02
Hi everybody.
00:03 - 00:06
Um, as you all know, we have a really big day today
00:06 - 00:07
and this is
00:08 - 00:12
our briefing for emergency response for
00:12 - 00:18
the wave of asylum seekers that are coming to the US Mexico border,
00:19 - 00:22
um, and how we can best help them today.
00:24 - 00:28
So as we know, they are escaping violence. Violence from their home countries.
00:28 - 00:31
Many are from Mexico.
00:31 - 00:33
But there are many others from Central America that have
00:33 - 00:37
traveled thousands of miles to get to this border.
00:37 - 00:41
We have no idea really what they've been through,
00:41 - 00:43
but we do know that they're escaping violence
00:44 - 00:45
in an autocratic
00:46 - 00:52
government style, whether that be from the drug cartels or the government itself.
00:52 - 00:56
We also know that here in the United States, um,
00:56 - 00:59
we are not very welcoming to asylum seekers
00:59 - 01:02
and immigrants from this part of the world.
01:02 - 01:05
So we're here today to do what we can
01:05 - 01:07
to help them
01:07 - 01:14
and make sure that they are welcome, as welcome as they possibly can be.
01:14 - 01:16
I do not get sent back.
01:17 - 01:22
We don't want anybody to be put in camps. We are here to help them and get them
01:24 - 01:26
put them on their best foot, best foot forward.
01:27 - 01:33
So here's what we do want to do today, where we want to have a plan from the beginning.
01:33 - 01:35
So, I know everybody has their plan.
01:35 - 01:39
We need to reinforce the idea that these migrants are
01:39 - 01:41
going to need our support for the long haul.
01:41 - 01:45
So today is where it starts. It's not where it ends.
01:46 - 01:52
We want to make sure that we clearly explain who you are and what you are doing.
01:52 - 01:55
So what your role is every single move you make,
01:55 - 01:59
I want to make sure that you know that you are to explain it to them.
02:00 - 02:03
We want to be completely transparent
02:03 - 02:04
to them.
02:05 - 02:09
We want to be here to answer their questions. We don't want them to have questions
02:09 - 02:11
about our motives.
02:11 - 02:14
We need them to be able to trust us.
02:14 - 02:16
And because that's how we're going to be able to help them the most.
02:17 - 02:21
We also need to respect religious and cultural differences.
02:22 - 02:26
Um, we are seeing a lot of
02:27 - 02:31
catholic migrants, but that's not the only religion.
02:31 - 02:35
These migrants will have to be culturally aware and sensitive.
02:35 - 02:40
We also really need to understand that they have just experienced a men's trauma
02:40 - 02:42
trauma from um,
02:42 - 02:46
what they experienced in their home country that's caused them to flex to flee.
02:46 - 02:49
And then also the trauma of the migration itself.
02:50 - 02:54
So be empathetic to what they've gone through because we can't
02:54 - 02:58
we can't even begin to imagine. Right?
02:59 - 03:01
All right, So now what not to do?
03:02 - 03:06
We do not give orders to these people. We are not their boss.
03:06 - 03:10
We need to offer them all of their options and make
03:10 - 03:14
sure that we're giving them the autonomy over what happens next.
03:15 - 03:19
It was on Julia. We cannot make our migrants do anything
03:20 - 03:24
that they don't want to do. We're going to give them all of their options.
03:24 - 03:26
We can say what we think would be the best option.
03:26 - 03:30
But we do not make any decisions for them.
03:30 - 03:33
We also don't make any decisions without their consent.
03:33 - 03:34
So
03:34 - 03:38
if somebody is non verbal or
03:39 - 03:45
possibly experiencing a medical emergency, we cannot make decisions for them.
03:45 - 03:47
We are not the government.
03:47 - 03:48
We are not
03:49 - 03:51
in charge of them. We are here to help them.
03:51 - 03:57
We also don't speak on behalf of their government ever. This is really, really huge.
03:57 - 04:01
We are in the United States, we are not in Mexico, we are not in Guatemala.
04:01 - 04:05
We are not in Honduras. We do not speak on behalf of their government.
04:07 - 04:13
All right guys, let's go out there and really make a difference for these people.
04:13 - 04:15
Okay. All right. Great job
