00:00 - 00:03
Hi everyone, Jackie Kennedy here and this week, my critical
00:04 - 00:06
friend Emily and I talked about growth mindset.
00:07 - 00:10
And the first question we discussed was how can we
00:10 - 00:14
move from self awareness of mindsets, depositions, habit tubes and
00:14 - 00:15
grits into action.
00:16 - 00:18
And what we said is that those self assessments last
00:19 - 00:21
week that we took and kind of talking about self
00:21 - 00:25
assessments overall with our students can be really helpful in
00:25 - 00:28
kind of finding out what our shortcomings are or things
00:28 - 00:29
we are missing within ourselves.
00:30 - 00:32
We want ourselves to be the best because we know
00:33 - 00:35
that our students look up to us and we need
00:35 - 00:38
to show them that we are committed to coming out
00:38 - 00:40
of our own comfort zone to become the best person
00:40 - 00:41
best teacher.
00:41 - 00:41
We can be.
00:43 - 00:46
The second question we discussed was what can we do
00:47 - 00:51
to grow our own mindset mindsets while also fostering our
00:51 - 00:54
students. And we said we first need to believe that
00:54 - 00:56
our students can grow and can get better.
00:57 - 01:00
I think sometimes we see our students test scores coming
01:00 - 01:02
into our class and we kind of get our own
01:02 - 01:04
idea of what they can or can't do.
01:05 - 01:07
But I think believing in all of those students and
01:07 - 01:10
that they all can make progress also creating a relationship
01:11 - 01:11
with them.
01:12 - 01:14
Um, so that throughout the year you kind of become
01:14 - 01:17
invested too and hoping that they succeed in knowing that
01:17 - 01:18
they can succeed.
01:20 - 01:23
I also said, we also need to make sure we're
01:23 - 01:26
not always just focusing on academics again, fostering that relationship
01:27 - 01:28
at my old school.
01:28 - 01:31
We actually once a week had character development time.
01:31 - 01:34
So every month we focused on a different word and
01:35 - 01:36
those words were things like perseverance.
01:37 - 01:41
So talking all month long, how important perseverance is within
01:42 - 01:45
all of our different academics and doing activities which involved
01:46 - 01:54
those. The third question, what sort of strategies practices, reinforcements
01:55 - 01:58
can make a difference when trying to foster mindsets and
01:58 - 02:01
others. Um One thing I really liked at the beginning
02:01 - 02:03
of the year at my school, new school with our
02:04 - 02:07
curriculum is they really focus two or three weeks all
02:07 - 02:10
about struggling and teaching our students that it's ok to
02:10 - 02:12
struggle and it's actually better when you do struggle because
02:13 - 02:15
most of the time you end up learning more um
02:16 - 02:18
we all so focused on what does it look like
02:18 - 02:19
when you struggle?
02:19 - 02:21
Do you just give up or do you keep trying?
02:22 - 02:25
And we did a lot of activities um that we're
02:25 - 02:28
kind of focused on the students struggling, but it really
02:28 - 02:32
showed me how they can keep doing it and it
02:32 - 02:34
showed the students that it's ok um if they don't
02:34 - 02:36
always know the right answer, as long as they keep
02:37 - 02:44
trying and using that perseverance, is it possible that growth
02:44 - 02:47
mindset can have a negative impact on learning growth or
02:47 - 02:50
development? Um Emily and I kind of talked the most
02:51 - 02:52
about this one just because we kind of went back
02:53 - 02:56
and forth because reading it initially, you would think there
02:56 - 02:58
is no way that growth mindset can have a negative
02:58 - 03:01
impact, but then we kind of got to talking about
03:01 - 03:04
when we teach our students about growth mindset being very
03:04 - 03:09
diligent and saying to be realistic, we can't um teach
03:10 - 03:13
them and Emily use the example of all the students
03:13 - 03:17
thinking that they can become professional athletes who talked about
03:17 - 03:20
as in the younger grades, it's probably okay that they
03:20 - 03:24
all think they're going to become a soccer star, but
03:24 - 03:27
really in middle school and the older grades kind of
03:28 - 03:32
letting them believe that they can become better, they can
03:32 - 03:34
maybe be on the high school team, but kind of
03:34 - 03:39
having those realistic expectations is growth mindset.
03:40 - 03:42
All a person needs to be successful and achieve their
03:43 - 03:46
goals. We said no, that actually the most important is
03:46 - 03:47
the follow through.
03:48 - 03:52
So it's one thing to believe that you can become
03:53 - 03:55
such so much better and have that perseverance, but that
03:56 - 03:58
follow through is probably the most important or kind of
03:58 - 03:59
key to it all.
04:02 - 04:04
And the last question we talked about, what are your
04:04 - 04:06
overall thoughts about growth mindset?
04:07 - 04:11
Growth mindset based on the variety of perspectives you've explored
04:11 - 04:12
in this unit.
04:13 - 04:16
Um we said that growth mindset is kind of at
04:16 - 04:19
the front of everything if our students don't think they
04:19 - 04:22
can or they come in thinking that I used the
04:22 - 04:24
example, one of my students came in telling me he
04:24 - 04:25
was stupid and he can't do it right away.
04:26 - 04:28
Um so first we need to foster that they can
04:29 - 04:29
do it.
04:29 - 04:32
We need to foster that growth mindset before they can
04:32 - 04:35
become a good math student or before we can give
04:35 - 04:38
them difficult problems and we need to teach them how
04:39 - 04:42
to think differently about the way they see themselves.
04:43 - 04:45
So growth mindset super important.
04:46 - 04:48
And obviously we discussed it further this week and I
04:48 - 04:51
just think I can't wait to continue talking about it
04:51 - 04:54
with my students in class and kind of throughout this
04:54 - 04:54
next week.
