00:00 - 00:02
how's it going to kill? So
00:02 - 00:04
in today's history lesson,
00:04 - 00:07
we're gonna talk about probably the most decisive battle in the pacific theater.
00:08 - 00:09
The battle of Midway
00:10 - 00:13
and I wanted to do this over present because I didn't feel like writing that a
00:13 - 00:15
justice is really hard to understand the battle
00:15 - 00:18
strategy and the crazy turn of events.
00:18 - 00:21
So for context, you know, Pearl Harbor happened,
00:21 - 00:23
the Japanese destroyed much of the american fleet
00:24 - 00:29
and uh luckily our four carriers are out on maneuvers and
00:30 - 00:30
they don't get hit.
00:31 - 00:35
And the mastermind behind the attack was this guy here, Admiral shot crew Yamamoto.
00:36 - 00:40
I probably butchered his first name a little bit, but he was the
00:41 - 00:43
head of the imperial Japanese navy. He was the animal.
00:43 - 00:47
Uh, he was Harvard educated man, incredibly intelligent,
00:47 - 00:49
one of the best leaders in history.
00:49 - 00:53
Um, I think he deserves a lot of respect because he was very good at what he did.
00:53 - 00:54
Um
00:55 - 00:56
and he was the mastermind behind the attack
00:56 - 00:59
and he recognized the importance of these american carriers
00:59 - 01:01
and he made it his mission to destroy him because he knew
01:01 - 01:04
it would hinder the american fleet and by destroying the carriers,
01:04 - 01:06
he would basically be able to roam
01:06 - 01:09
the pacific unchecked without the americans there.
01:09 - 01:13
He could expand as much as you want to expand the Japanese empire.
01:14 - 01:16
Also following Pearl harbor,
01:16 - 01:20
the US appointed Admiral Chester Nimitz as their Admiral of the U.
01:20 - 01:23
S. Naval fleet in the pacific and Nimitz.
01:23 - 01:28
He he's very calm, collected leader, but he's fearless, he's willing to take risks.
01:28 - 01:32
He knows he's got an uphill battle because he knows he's outnumbered.
01:32 - 01:34
He's outgunned but he's confident
01:35 - 01:38
that he can somehow find solutions and push back at the Japanese.
01:39 - 01:39
Yeah.
01:40 - 01:43
And Washington as his first active as Admiral.
01:43 - 01:45
Want him to do these do little rates and these
01:45 - 01:48
two little raids led by James Doolittle this uh,
01:48 - 01:50
he's the short guy in the middle with the black hat
01:51 - 01:53
essentially is taking these bombers which weren't
01:53 - 01:56
meant for aircraft cares have sailing close
01:56 - 02:00
to mainland Japan launching the bombers from I think it was the U.
02:00 - 02:02
S. S. Enterprise or the U. S. S. Hornet.
02:02 - 02:05
I'm not sure which aircraft carrier was but launched these bombers
02:06 - 02:10
and their target was Tokyo and it was more of like a ceremonial thing,
02:10 - 02:13
you know more for press like retribution on the Japanese for Pearl harbor.
02:13 - 02:17
But so they weren't that successful. More ceremony
02:17 - 02:19
but and symbolic.
02:19 - 02:23
But what did happen was one of the bombs almost hit the imperial palace
02:23 - 02:27
in Tokyo and the imperial palace houses the emperor and in Japanese culture,
02:27 - 02:32
the emperor's like a god he is worshiped and what it did with this bomb falling so
02:32 - 02:36
close to imperial palaces that galvanized the Japanese
02:36 - 02:39
and it galvanized them behind Yamamoto and it gave
02:40 - 02:43
the Japanese high command confidence in what Yamamoto had
02:43 - 02:46
said about the importance of destroying these carriers.
02:46 - 02:48
So they give it gives him the permission.
02:48 - 02:55
Um and the respect he needs to to plan an attack to finish off the carrier groups.
02:55 - 02:59
So his ideas to attack this atoll island called Midway and
02:59 - 03:02
his hope is that if you can attack this island,
03:02 - 03:04
it will spark an american response.
03:04 - 03:09
The american fleet will come from Midway and he'll have his whole fleet,
03:09 - 03:10
they'll there,
03:10 - 03:14
excuse me and they'll demolish and suppress the rest of the american fleet.
03:15 - 03:19
And while this, the planning is going on the americans,
03:19 - 03:24
the Japanese engaged in this the first air to sea battle at the battle of Coral Sea.
03:24 - 03:28
And yes, the U. S. Were successful in delivering some blows to the Japanese navy.
03:28 - 03:34
But the Japanese, they were able to destroy the USs Lexington, one of the U. S.
03:34 - 03:37
Carriers and they believed to have
03:37 - 03:39
destroyed another one, the USs Yorktown.
03:39 - 03:43
So now in the Japanese eyes, the U. S. Are down to two carriers.
03:45 - 03:46
So they're planning Midway.
03:47 - 03:52
And this guy right here brilliant mind. Rockford, he's an american code breaker.
03:52 - 03:56
He is well versed in the Japanese language.
03:56 - 03:59
He's very good at breaking their code and the american code.
03:59 - 04:01
Breakers had broken a code from a Japanese
04:01 - 04:03
scout playing a couple months prior to Midway,
04:04 - 04:06
in which it was flying by the island of Midway in
04:06 - 04:07
the island of Midway is in the middle of the ocean.
04:07 - 04:08
There's nothing by it.
04:09 - 04:12
And he points out it and he gives it a name and I don't remember the name.
04:12 - 04:15
I think it was like a five is what they called her a something like that.
04:15 - 04:16
But that's what they tagged.
04:16 - 04:20
And Rockford knew that, that when he, when he the scalp,
04:20 - 04:23
I was flying and he said I'm passing a five, he knew that was Midway.
04:25 - 04:28
And so in the months leading up to it, they keep hearing more and more
04:29 - 04:32
talk in the japanese code about this island.
04:32 - 04:36
So Rockford is like the japanese are planning an attack on Midway.
04:36 - 04:40
So it goes through superiors and again, code breaking new technology,
04:40 - 04:43
a lot of americans, a lot of the american high command.
04:43 - 04:44
They didn't, they didn't,
04:45 - 04:48
they didn't understand it. So therefore they didn't really trust
04:49 - 04:50
Russia. But
04:50 - 04:52
Chester Nimitz,
04:52 - 04:56
he sees the importance in it. He trusts Rockford.
04:56 - 05:00
So he goes to Rockford and he says, I, I believe you,
05:00 - 05:03
I believe the japanese are planning something but I need something more.
05:04 - 05:07
And so what Roger does is he sets this brilliant trap
05:08 - 05:10
With the American code because the Japanese were also
05:10 - 05:12
breaking the American cracking the American code two.
05:13 - 05:16
So he has the, the guys at Midway
05:17 - 05:22
send out a radio message saying that there
05:23 - 05:25
diesel their water desalinization,
05:25 - 05:28
which was what turns the saltwater and the freshwater is broken.
05:29 - 05:31
And a couple hours later
05:31 - 05:33
they intercept Japanese code saying,
05:33 - 05:38
oh the americans are out of water on a five or a whatever they call it
05:39 - 05:40
and meeting Midway.
05:41 - 05:42
And so
05:42 - 05:45
now Rockford knows that the
05:46 - 05:49
code that they have been intercepting about a surprise uh,
05:49 - 05:52
surprise attack an attack on Midway is indeed Midway.
05:52 - 05:55
So he goes to Nimitz and Nimitz starts to devise a plan.
05:56 - 05:57
So
05:58 - 06:01
now the Japanese are steaming towards Midway
06:02 - 06:04
and they're getting close to the point of the attack.
06:04 - 06:10
And the Japanese have four carriers that they're sending the akagi Kaga Sirigu
06:11 - 06:15
s I think the last one is called sore You, I don't know, I'm not 100% certain
06:15 - 06:16
But you got four carriers
06:16 - 06:17
and
06:17 - 06:21
who's leading these carriers is this guy, Admiral Nagumo.
06:21 - 06:24
And the interesting thing is Nagumo and Admiral Yamamoto don't
06:24 - 06:27
like each other and just based off of hierarchy alone.
06:28 - 06:31
Yamamoto is the commander of Nagumo.
06:31 - 06:34
Nagumo is in charge of of Yamamoto's prized carrier fleet.
06:35 - 06:38
And Nagumo is very by the book, he
06:39 - 06:42
has a book in front of him and that's how he makes all of his decisions.
06:42 - 06:46
He's a great leader but he's by the book and you'll see that this is his weakness.
06:47 - 06:47
So
06:48 - 06:50
on the morning of the attack,
06:51 - 06:53
the Japanese use those aircraft carriers,
06:53 - 06:56
they launch all these air squadrons armed with bombs
06:56 - 06:58
and they bomb the ship out of Midway island.
06:59 - 07:01
To Nagumo surprised.
07:01 - 07:02
However,
07:02 - 07:05
none of the american planes at Midway there and this
07:05 - 07:07
was because the americans knew the Japanese were coming.
07:08 - 07:12
So all of those planes had taken off earlier in the morning and we're headed towards
07:12 - 07:16
the Japanese fleet and these were high altitude bombers that the americans had.
07:16 - 07:21
So they weren't very successful in landing uh any any hits on the Japanese fleet.
07:22 - 07:24
So Nagumo it pisces.
07:24 - 07:28
Nagumo off though that these bombers drop, try to drop bombs on his fleet.
07:28 - 07:29
So he's like,
07:29 - 07:32
we're finishing off Midway arm all the rearm all of the
07:32 - 07:37
air squadrons with land bombs and let's just annihilate Midway Island
07:38 - 07:43
at the same time. Just as all of his air squadrons are armed with land bombs.
07:44 - 07:45
His one of his scout planes,
07:46 - 07:48
I can't imagine what this would have looked like,
07:48 - 07:53
but through the clouds he spots the whole american carrier group and yes,
07:53 - 07:55
it's it's four carriers,
07:56 - 07:57
it's
07:57 - 07:59
the enterprise, the hornet
08:00 - 08:03
and our three carriers, I apologize and the Yorktown
08:04 - 08:07
and the Japanese were stunned because they thought that
08:07 - 08:08
they had sunk the Yorktown in the coral sea.
08:08 - 08:09
But
08:10 - 08:13
The Yorktown had hobbled back to Pearl Harbor and in
08:13 - 08:16
three days had been repaired to be battle ready.
08:16 - 08:18
So it was there, it was at Midway.
08:18 - 08:20
So the whole american fleet which isn't supposed to be
08:20 - 08:23
there for another couple of days is at Midway,
08:23 - 08:26
Nagumo has no clue what to do because they,
08:26 - 08:30
the americans american carrier group was not supposed to be there
08:30 - 08:31
any panics a little bit
08:31 - 08:36
and in the Japanese book of Rules, when it comes to air squadrons,
08:36 - 08:40
it says you should always attack with a full squadron.
08:40 - 08:46
So his whole squadrons were armed with their ar were armed with land
08:46 - 08:47
ordinance
08:48 - 08:51
and they had no capability of sinking any american ships because they
08:51 - 08:53
were the bombs they were armed with were meant for land.
08:54 - 08:56
So Nagumo was like, oh my God, what do I do?
08:56 - 09:01
I my mission here was to destroy the american fleet. And so this is what it looks like.
09:02 - 09:06
So Nagumo is here, you see the four Japanese carriers and he's thinking to himself,
09:06 - 09:08
alright, I we came here for the carriers.
09:08 - 09:12
I know you just armed all of our planes with land bombs but
09:12 - 09:16
you need to now arm them with torpedoes and that takes time.
09:16 - 09:20
It takes hours to do that to re arm them with a different type of bomb
09:20 - 09:23
and they're in such a rush to do this
09:24 - 09:27
that they don't have time to properly stow the land bumps.
09:27 - 09:30
So all of this ordinance is just laying in these hangers and these carriers,
09:30 - 09:32
it's basically a ticking time bomb.
09:33 - 09:33
And
09:34 - 09:35
so
09:35 - 09:37
while this is going on,
09:38 - 09:39
the americans
09:39 - 09:41
now have the element of surprise
09:42 - 09:46
and sorry, they use their torpedo planes
09:46 - 09:48
which were outdated.
09:48 - 09:52
Not very the torpedoes they were using weren't effective at all.
09:52 - 09:55
They had like a one in 10% chance of if they hit their target,
09:55 - 09:57
they would actually detonates unreliable.
09:57 - 10:01
They fly their torpedo squadrons in there with the element of surprise.
10:01 - 10:05
The japanese with cover from the fighters patrolling their fleet,
10:05 - 10:08
they decimate the american torpedo squadron.
10:08 - 10:11
So now the elements limits no longer has the element of surprise
10:11 - 10:12
and
10:12 - 10:15
coordination at this time in terms of error
10:15 - 10:19
warfare, especially on the american side didn't exist.
10:19 - 10:24
It was each carrier launched their own individual squadron and whatever.
10:25 - 10:28
So now the americans, all they have left is dive bombers.
10:28 - 10:30
And these dive bombers which you can see here these dauntless is
10:31 - 10:34
are incredibly effective and it happened to be
10:34 - 10:36
piloted by all the experienced american pilots.
10:36 - 10:38
And so each of these three american carriers,
10:38 - 10:41
the Yorktown Enterprise and Hornet launched
10:41 - 10:43
their own respective dive bomber squadrons.
10:44 - 10:47
No coordination at all. They don't fly together.
10:47 - 10:49
Each of these three individually go out
10:50 - 10:51
and
10:52 - 10:53
uh, and so they're traveling,
10:53 - 10:55
they're looking for the Japanese fleet they can't find.
10:55 - 10:58
And then by some sheer luck, one of the squadron,
10:58 - 11:04
the squadron from the Yorktown spots the Japanese fleet.
11:04 - 11:05
And so right,
11:05 - 11:09
it's so they climb altitude and they're about to initiate their attack.
11:09 - 11:14
And again by sheer luck at the same time, the air squadrons from the U. S.
11:14 - 11:18
S Enterprise also luckily find the Japanese fleet.
11:18 - 11:20
So to the japanese,
11:20 - 11:24
it looks like the americans have this well coordinated air attack.
11:24 - 11:25
But it was all luck,
11:25 - 11:29
the americans just happened upon each other and these dauntless is
11:29 - 11:32
uh those dive bombers you see in front of us so sweet
11:33 - 11:38
The they climb to a high altitude and then when once they're on top of their target,
11:38 - 11:42
they engage in a 90° dive bomb straight down
11:43 - 11:47
and their mission is to get as close to the
11:47 - 11:50
in altitude to these carriers because the closer they get,
11:50 - 11:51
the more precise their bombs will be.
11:51 - 11:54
They were incredibly incredibly accurate.
11:55 - 11:58
And also if you can see by the images of
11:58 - 12:02
these aircraft carries those red dots the Japanese rising sun
12:03 - 12:04
makes for a great target.
12:04 - 12:06
So you have all of these two squadrons of
12:06 - 12:09
american dive bombers raining down on the japanese.
12:10 - 12:13
And like I said earlier, Nagumo being by the book
12:13 - 12:14
he had was
12:15 - 12:20
I had the opportunity for example to maybe say I know I have half my plane.
12:20 - 12:21
All of my plans have land bombs,
12:21 - 12:26
arm half of them with torpedoes and arm the other half of bombs and split them up.
12:26 - 12:27
But
12:27 - 12:30
in the book it said you have to have a full squadron.
12:30 - 12:33
So all of this ordinance was under in the hangars.
12:34 - 12:37
And so when these dive bombers hit their targets they were
12:37 - 12:41
incredibly effective because there was all this ordinance in these hangers.
12:42 - 12:43
So the U. S.
12:44 - 12:47
I was able to in a couple hours decimate all four
12:47 - 12:51
of the Japanese carriers destroyed all of them beyond beyond use.
12:51 - 12:52
Yeah,
12:52 - 12:56
so Nagumo in the span of five hours went from thinking he had
12:56 - 13:00
the americans on their heels thinking that the the attack on Midway the
13:00 - 13:04
surprise attack plan was going to work and all of a sudden it
13:04 - 13:07
flipped on his head and he all of a sudden had no carriers.
13:07 - 13:11
He was on one of the carriers. I think he went down to one of the ship.
13:11 - 13:12
No he returned in shame,
13:12 - 13:13
I think,
13:13 - 13:14
I don't even know,
13:15 - 13:16
but he left up.
13:16 - 13:18
And so the americans
13:19 - 13:22
Destroy these four Japanese carriers and all.
13:22 - 13:24
Yamamoto can do with his whole,
13:24 - 13:27
with the whole Japanese fleet minus the carrier group he sent to midway
13:27 - 13:32
100 miles away, 150 miles. I don't know how far it was, but he's a day away.
13:33 - 13:37
All he can do is watch while his four of his six carriers are destroyed
13:38 - 13:40
and this puts him on his back feet.
13:40 - 13:42
He thought he would have a decisive victory
13:42 - 13:45
at Midway destroy the carriers and it would put
13:45 - 13:46
them on the right track to defeating the
13:46 - 13:49
american fleet and being unchecked in the pacific.
13:49 - 13:51
But instead the american surprise him
13:52 - 13:54
off. Of sheer luck basically
13:55 - 14:00
um and destroy their carriers and Nagumo's demise was he was to buy the book.
14:00 - 14:03
And that's what I find so fascinating
14:03 - 14:07
about this story is that through incredible intelligence
14:07 - 14:12
and a general being too, by the book, the US get a decisive victory at Midway.
14:12 - 14:14
And now Yamamoto doesn't know what to do.
14:15 - 14:21
Now he's, he's scared of the americans and Nimitz. This builds confidence.
14:21 - 14:24
And so over the course, the next few months,
14:24 - 14:27
the americans begin to push back the japanese in the pacific and
14:27 - 14:31
over time they eventually reached through Abbott's idea of island hopping,
14:31 - 14:33
which I may cover in a future lesson.
14:34 - 14:37
They eventually reached japanese mainland and we know how
14:37 - 14:38
we all know how it goes from there.
14:39 - 14:42
But this is a fascinating battle because
14:42 - 14:45
it just shows the sheer importance of intelligence.
