00:01 - 00:06
my learning manifesto by Leslie Williams, my grandma, grandpa and
00:07 - 00:09
father are all educators and I knew that I wanted
00:09 - 00:11
to follow in their footsteps since I was in the
00:11 - 00:15
second grade After teaching for 15 years, my manifesto has
00:15 - 00:16
changed many times.
00:17 - 00:20
I've taught every grade level from pre K to fifth.
00:20 - 00:22
And not only has it changed with each grade level,
00:22 - 00:23
but also with experience.
00:26 - 00:30
Although education has changed drastically over the years, my main
00:30 - 00:36
philosophies have, not from the beginning, I've always said that
00:37 - 00:38
I want to be the teacher that not only focuses
00:39 - 00:44
and teaches my students about academics, but how to be
00:44 - 00:47
good people, respectful family members and upstanding citizens.
00:49 - 00:52
There's a quote by dr rita Pearson that I've always
00:52 - 00:56
loved and remind myself of frequently, every child deserves a
00:57 - 00:59
champion, an adult who will never give up on them,
00:59 - 01:03
who understands the power of connection and insist that they
01:03 - 01:05
become the best they can possibly be.
01:07 - 01:11
I strive each day for my students to feel that
01:11 - 01:12
I love them like my own.
01:13 - 01:15
Not only do I love who they are, but I
01:15 - 01:17
love the learners they are and the scholars, they're becoming
01:18 - 01:19
to do this.
01:19 - 01:22
I spent the first few weeks developing relationships in our
01:22 - 01:22
classroom community.
01:23 - 01:25
This is so important to building trust between my students
01:26 - 01:26
and I.
01:28 - 01:31
Students will learn better where they feel comfortable and safe
01:31 - 01:33
and I want my classroom to be that place for
01:33 - 01:35
them. I hope that each student leaves my classroom knowing
01:36 - 01:38
that they are lifelong learners who make mistakes and that's
01:38 - 01:42
okay. I want them to be hands on 21st century
01:42 - 01:44
students who teach me as much as I teach them
01:49 - 01:50
and I decided to go back to get my masters
01:51 - 01:53
degree. I knew I wanted to find a technology education
01:54 - 01:56
program. I love working with technology.
01:57 - 01:59
I have my own small graphic design business and I
01:59 - 02:02
have unofficially become the tech, go to person on my
02:02 - 02:05
campus. I feel like after quarantine tech became the forefront
02:06 - 02:08
to education and now that we see the benefits, it's
02:08 - 02:10
not going away anytime soon.
02:11 - 02:12
Technology in the classroom is our future.
02:14 - 02:17
I believe that it increases engagement and accountability with our
02:17 - 02:19
students and we can open the world to give virtual
02:19 - 02:21
experiences that students may not have.
02:21 - 02:24
Otherwise. There are so many ways to communicate with students
02:25 - 02:27
around the world and engage their global voices and perspectives
02:28 - 02:29
to cultures around them.
02:30 - 02:32
As far as the future is concerned, I truly believe
02:33 - 02:35
that we are teaching our students for the jobs they
02:36 - 02:37
will have that currently do not exist.
02:38 - 02:40
We need the students to know how to share ideas
02:41 - 02:44
and collaborate with each other using multiple platforms to prepare
02:44 - 02:46
them for new tech careers that are being developed.
02:47 - 02:50
E portfolios are an example and they've become so popular
02:51 - 02:53
with students even as young as kindergarten to show their
02:53 - 02:54
work progress and learning.
02:56 - 02:59
I truly believe that using technology in the classroom will
02:59 - 03:01
change the way teachers are able to vary the instruction
03:02 - 03:05
to every student's needs and abilities and provide better educational
03:05 - 03:07
opportunities for every learner.
03:11 - 03:14
One of the challenges the educators face is burnt out.
03:15 - 03:18
I believe this is because most forget why they wanted
03:18 - 03:19
to teach in the first place.
03:20 - 03:21
It's easy to get rolled up in all the paperwork,
03:22 - 03:25
data, politics and social stresses that come with the job
03:26 - 03:27
and we forget that we are there for the students.
03:29 - 03:31
Then when we begin to add new resources and technology
03:32 - 03:34
into the mix each year and some teachers struggle to
03:34 - 03:37
accept the change and resist new and upcoming ways to
03:37 - 03:40
teach. Many teachers want the interaction with their students and
03:41 - 03:43
feel that virtual learning will provide a lack of contact
03:43 - 03:44
with them and their peers.
03:45 - 03:47
I think one of the ways we can lessen and
03:47 - 03:49
begin to solve this problem is for districts to make
03:49 - 03:52
sure that all teachers are receiving adequate training to all
03:52 - 03:53
staff members.
03:53 - 03:56
If new programs are being introduced, teachers are less likely
03:56 - 03:58
to get on board with technology if they don't feel
03:58 - 03:59
comfortable using it themselves.
04:00 - 04:02
If we expect our students to grow and change each
04:03 - 04:08
year, then teachers should do the same as I continue
04:08 - 04:09
on this grad school journey.
04:10 - 04:13
My excitement only grows for the possibilities of what I
04:13 - 04:15
will learn and be able to do by the end
04:15 - 04:17
of my courses, I will not only be able to
04:17 - 04:20
introduce my students to a new way of learning through
04:20 - 04:23
technology but also help my peers and co workers.
04:23 - 04:26
I get excited knowing that a student who may have
04:26 - 04:29
struggled before they find a new way of succeeding with
04:29 - 04:31
technology projects or new online programs.
04:33 - 04:34
The growth that we see is endless.
04:37 - 04:38
My goal is to eventually work in the district level
04:39 - 04:42
to help evolve our curriculum to include more technology and
04:42 - 04:45
how to easily integrate it into daily lesson planning.
04:46 - 04:47
I'm blessed to teach in a district that has wonderful
04:48 - 04:50
tech department and seems ahead of the game when it
04:50 - 04:53
comes to program, student services and support that our teachers
04:53 - 04:57
receive. Technology may not answer all of our problems in
04:57 - 05:00
education, but it's a good starting point in providing another
05:00 - 05:03
opportunity for all students to learn at their own pace
05:04 - 05:04
and in their own way.
