  1. okay, So high.
  2. This is my project on sustainability, mainly focused on air
  3. travel. So my name is Ethan Hollandsworth.
  4. I was born in Charlotte, North Carolina.
  5. Currently, I am attending TCC, majoring in accounting on Dhe.
  6. I chose air travel because I've been on planes many
  7. times. I've traveled a lot, and I love to do
  8. it, but it's also very harmful to our environment and
  9. our personal health, even in the long run.
  10. So I'd like to see what we can do to
  11. further our generations and help them.
  12. Sustainability is the avoidance of depletion of our natural resource
  13. is in order to grow as a society on protect
  14. our environment and even our personal help from all these
  15. toxic chemicals in the air.
  16. Air travel is responsible for over 2.5% of Earth's carbon
  17. emissions. Over an estimated 21 million people flight through Honolulu
  18. each year, it is in the world's top 30 ist
  19. busiest airports, so air travel has been around for a
  20. long time, with commercial air travel coming into existence around
  21. 1914. In the last 30 years since 1990 air travel
  22. has increased by over 87%.
  23. Um, toe fly a plane.
  24. You have to burn jet fuel, which is necessary, and
  25. that pollutes our lands and oceans the most throughout the
  26. flights. So I looked up a secondary source and I
  27. was on green Aviation on.
  28. This is basically just being green while you fly.
  29. The airline industry needs to move in a healthy direction.
  30. The airlines have explored electric planes and even more fuel
  31. efficient planes looking at biofuels as well, and then the
  32. alternate fuels they usually consist of, like algae plants, bacteria
  33. and even human waste to power the plane.
  34. So course AEA is short for carbon offsetting and reduction
  35. scheme. For the international aviation, it is a plan to
  36. reduce emissions and become carbon neutral, while also purchasing carbon
  37. offsets like planting trees in another part of the world
  38. to become carbon neutral on this plan includes over 81
  39. countries throughout the world.
  40. So then I looked at a primary source of a
  41. study that was conducted, and researchers were in a European
  42. airport trying to find out people's willingness to pay toe
  43. lower their carbon footprint or even just how aware the
  44. passengers are of their impact of the trip.
  45. UK and Dutch passengers are the most aware out of
  46. everybody it with Americans and then the Asians behind them.
  47. On the 44% of the people have heard of the
  48. Kyoto Protocol.
  49. That's an international treaty to reduce carbon emissions and try
  50. to become carbon neutral Europeans have.
  51. The study showed that Europeans were the most willing to
  52. pay, which was followed up by Americans.
  53. Research shows that over 75% of the passengers are actually
  54. willing to pay to reduce their carbon footprint.
  55. This image shows some of their motivations of why they
  56. might be willing to pay a lot the main to
  57. our travel traveler responsibility, their environmental concern or even for
  58. their future generations, maybe for their kids and their kids.
  59. Kids. Yeah.
  60. So the willingness to pay this chart shows that Europeans
  61. are willing to pay upto 26 a half dollars while
  62. North American American people are willing to pay about $20
  63. then Asia is much less at about 16.1 euros per
  64. flight on people, it's calculated by each kilometre that you
  65. travel, and so the amount that the European stated comes
  66. out to about one cent per kilometre.
  67. So the comparison and the articles the articles are very
  68. similar. They both state that reform is needed in order
  69. for the airlines to do implement more fuel efficient flights
  70. to reduce the carbon emissions and a halt global warming.
  71. And then, in the primary article, I found a quote
  72. that said Offsetting essentially involves balancing greenhouse gas emissions from
  73. one activity with the purposeful greenhouse gas reductions or sequestration
  74. from another activity in order to mean carbon neutral.
  75. Neutrality is basically just like I said earlier, planting trees
  76. and other part of the world toe kind of offset
  77. that carbon.
  78. I'll put that they do.
  79. Here is some more images.
  80. I found this one interesting because it really shows you
  81. how much planes haven't impact.
  82. So programs off CO two per passenger per kilometre.
  83. Ah bus gives out about 68 per trip, whereas a
  84. flight puts out 285 grams of CO two per kilometer,
  85. which is a astonishing.
  86. This gives you a relative idea off how that planes
  87. are kind of heating up the atmosphere and contributing to
  88. global warming.
  89. And how can you help?
  90. You can help by either taking a direct flight.
  91. You can reduce waste during your flight that contributes to
  92. those emissions, and you can choose more fuel efficient airlines.
  93. Airlines do state that they use biofuels on some of
  94. their flights and the airline industry they need to improve
  95. their aircraft efficiency, use more biofuels and even increase the
  96. amount of carbon offsets they have on men here.
  97. Other sources for all the images and information.
  98. Thank you for watching.
