00:00 - 00:02
Hi everybody,
00:02 - 00:07
my name is Naomi Otsuru and today I would like to introduce our equity challenge.
00:07 - 00:09
And so for our group,
00:09 - 00:14
we decided to focus on high school graduation rates in Arizona and how
00:14 - 00:17
we can create an intervention to help students find their way to success.
00:18 - 00:22
So we know that high school graduation is often a
00:22 - 00:26
gateway for young individuals to access many different opportunities.
00:26 - 00:26
Um,
00:26 - 00:27
yeah,
00:27 - 00:29
that can support them in reaching various schools
00:29 - 00:31
that they have and lead them to success.
00:31 - 00:35
And I would say that it's a very important part of our younger years.
00:35 - 00:40
It allows us to expand on our knowledge, experience new things and to take
00:41 - 00:43
ourselves into the next step of life.
00:44 - 00:45
And so currently
00:45 - 00:47
We would say, um,
00:47 - 00:53
that the average high school graduation rate in Arizona is around 78% and the number
00:53 - 00:54
of students who continue to drop out are
00:54 - 00:57
consistent throughout these last couple of years,
00:57 - 01:00
according to the Arizona, we want organization.
01:01 - 01:05
And so there's a variety of different reasons why a student would decide to drop out,
01:05 - 01:07
but here are some, just to name a few.
01:08 - 01:14
So the first one would be that they are facing some personal issues such as, yeah,
01:14 - 01:17
family issues, um, difficulty in, um,
01:17 - 01:20
their environment at home or maybe they have to,
01:21 - 01:25
um, work to support their siblings or their family and
01:26 - 01:29
are finding it difficult to focus on their academics.
01:29 - 01:30
Um,
01:30 - 01:33
we find that some students feel that they have no purpose
01:33 - 01:37
in education and they feel like what they're doing right now is
01:37 - 01:38
not worth what they're going through.
01:38 - 01:44
And many students also feel that sometimes they have a lack of support overall in.
01:45 - 01:46
Um and
01:47 - 01:47
yeah,
01:47 - 01:50
I have difficulty finding opportunities to reach the goals
01:50 - 01:52
that they need in order to reach graduation.
01:52 - 01:59
So why is high school graduation such a crucial topic to Arizona's?
01:59 - 02:01
Um As I said earlier,
02:01 - 02:04
high school graduation can help give students
02:04 - 02:06
more opportunities for success in their future.
02:06 - 02:08
Um we see that on average, actually,
02:08 - 02:12
high school graduates earn $8,000 more annually compared
02:12 - 02:13
to those who don't finish high school,
02:13 - 02:16
according to the Arizona, we want statistics.
02:17 - 02:23
And although we can't solve all these issues at once, we felt as a team that
02:24 - 02:29
um as long as we are able to give students the opportunities they need to succeed,
02:29 - 02:30
that we can
02:30 - 02:33
help more students to finish and to graduate high school.
