00:02 - 00:05
Hey parents, I'm sorry you missed open house and I'm
00:05 - 00:08
actually sorry, we don't have the parents come into the
00:08 - 00:11
classroom, that's my preferred way to do open house.
00:12 - 00:17
But anyway, I'm tammy sarin and I am a crew
00:17 - 00:17
tech teacher.
00:18 - 00:21
So I probably have your child in intro to business
00:21 - 00:26
and technology or entrepreneurship or maybe even um teaching as
00:26 - 00:29
a profession, probably gonna do a different video for that
00:29 - 00:31
anyway, so thanks for watching.
00:31 - 00:32
Let's go ahead and get started.
00:34 - 00:37
Um so this is me, well that's kind of hard
00:37 - 00:40
to read, but I have three kids and a husband
00:41 - 00:41
and a dog.
00:42 - 00:44
My Children went to Milton.
00:45 - 00:47
I still have one here, a senior.
00:48 - 00:50
Um so pretty soon.
00:50 - 00:52
I'm not gonna be a Milton mom anymore, I'm just
00:52 - 00:52
gonna be a Milton teacher.
00:54 - 00:57
Um I already mentioned the classes that I teach, I'm
00:57 - 01:00
also in the tag department, although not very busy with
01:01 - 01:04
those duties because I've got so much going on in
01:04 - 01:07
career tech, I love to cheer for the bulldogs and
01:07 - 01:08
the eagles.
01:09 - 01:13
Um so during the course of the year I will
01:13 - 01:14
talk to the students about the fish philosophy.
01:15 - 01:22
It's um, it's good for classroom environment, classroom culture, it's
01:22 - 01:24
based out of the pike place, fish market in Seattle.
01:25 - 01:29
They, there are four principles, one is play, having fun
01:30 - 01:30
doing whatever you're doing.
01:31 - 01:35
Um even if you're working hard um to is making
01:36 - 01:39
their day, so just treating people special, even when it's
01:39 - 01:42
not their birthday, it could be a note, it could
01:42 - 01:45
be a text, it could be even a smile or
01:45 - 01:47
just um you know using somebody's name.
01:47 - 01:50
And I also mentioned that you know when you make
01:50 - 01:53
somebody else feel good, it actually comes back and it
01:53 - 01:54
makes you feel good as well.
01:55 - 01:58
Um next principle is be there, this one's tricky because
01:58 - 02:01
you've got to be present, which means putting away your
02:01 - 02:06
phone or your laptop or your game controllers and actually
02:06 - 02:09
making eye contact with with the person that you're talking
02:10 - 02:14
to and like actually listening to them and then choose
02:14 - 02:19
your attitude, which you know, most of my students that
02:19 - 02:20
I have have lovely attitudes.
02:21 - 02:24
So hopefully you can say the same um when you're
02:24 - 02:24
at home.
02:24 - 02:27
But um I just talked to them about how it's
02:27 - 02:27
just a choice.
02:28 - 02:28
It's a decision.
02:29 - 02:31
You know, you can wake up and be grumpy, a
02:31 - 02:34
stinky fish or you can wake up and just choose
02:34 - 02:36
to be happy and sometimes it takes a while, but
02:36 - 02:38
eventually your mood will change.
02:40 - 02:43
So I'm aware of all of the demands that these
02:43 - 02:44
kids have on them.
02:45 - 02:45
They're they're busy.
02:46 - 02:47
They've got a lot going on.
02:47 - 02:51
Um I remind them that they that they should get
02:52 - 02:55
9.25 hours of sleep every night not just on the
02:56 - 02:58
weekends, not just during the summer on vacations.
02:59 - 03:03
And I also talked to about mindfulness and the value
03:03 - 03:07
of exercise and eating nutritious food.
03:09 - 03:11
Yeah, some of the junk that I see.
03:11 - 03:13
Uh um well let's skip that.
03:13 - 03:18
So for intro to business and technology, we are we
03:18 - 03:22
just um we actually have been wrapped it up yet,
03:22 - 03:25
but we will do employment, so resumes cover letters, even
03:26 - 03:29
emails more so email now references who can they use
03:30 - 03:38
to to speak about their character and work ethic and
03:38 - 03:40
then we'll talk about how to prepare for the interview.
03:41 - 03:44
Um some of the other units are listed there and
03:45 - 03:49
one thing that is offered for um for both entrepreneurship
03:50 - 03:53
and ensure the business and technology is they have the
03:53 - 03:55
opportunity to do the Microsoft office certification.
03:56 - 04:00
Uh Fulton County Schools feels like it's valuable enough that
04:00 - 04:03
they pay for the training and the actual test.
04:03 - 04:06
So I had several students do the training and the
04:06 - 04:09
testing last year, their certificates around my wall out in
04:09 - 04:10
the hall which you could have seen if you were
04:11 - 04:15
here. Um but anyway, I did over summer, I ran
04:15 - 04:17
into a former student who was in my class who
04:17 - 04:19
wasn't the best student and he was like, oh this
04:19 - 04:22
is san about to be a senior, he's in college,
04:22 - 04:24
I'm about to be a senior right now.
04:25 - 04:29
I've taken some of the Microsoft office certification um exams
04:30 - 04:32
and I'm I'm just about to take one more, I
04:32 - 04:35
wish I would have taken advantage of it in your
04:36 - 04:39
classroom and I'm like uh me too, but it's good
04:39 - 04:40
for me to hear it made me happy.
04:42 - 04:45
Um let's see, you're not teaching that right now, so
04:46 - 04:50
um entrepreneurship, we're actually going to um have a class
04:51 - 04:53
based business and then I'm going to encourage them to
04:54 - 04:56
branch out on their own if they don't already have
04:56 - 04:56
a business.
04:57 - 05:01
Um and even the intro to business and technology students
05:01 - 05:04
will be using this equipment, so we've got the commedia,
05:05 - 05:09
which is this, it prints vinyl for t shirts, this
05:09 - 05:12
is the heat press, so that actually adheres the final
05:13 - 05:13
to the shirts.
05:14 - 05:18
Uh then this is an embroidery machine, um this is
05:18 - 05:21
a hat machine, so the hat goes right there and
05:21 - 05:25
then this is a glow forge and so see if
05:25 - 05:26
there's a better spot.
05:27 - 05:30
Um Okay, so I've got some stuff that I can
05:30 - 05:30
show you.
05:31 - 05:35
One thing that I wanted to mention to is um
05:35 - 05:39
an entrepreneurship we spent last week design thinking, so that
05:39 - 05:43
is coming up with a creative solution to a big
05:44 - 05:48
problem. And so the problem that I posted them um
05:48 - 05:49
was the mess.
05:49 - 05:53
So a lot of people find that um they aren't
05:54 - 05:56
the most comfortable, it's hard to read facial expressions, hard
05:57 - 05:57
to hear things like that.
05:58 - 06:01
So, um step one is empathy, Talk to people, Talk
06:01 - 06:05
to the consumer, um how do you feel about it?
06:05 - 06:11
Uh Two is step two is um kind of define
06:11 - 06:14
the problem and then brainstorm come up with like crazy
06:15 - 06:16
ideas, it doesn't matter.
06:16 - 06:19
Three is actually prototype, and so I have a just
06:20 - 06:24
one to show you your child, um should have pictures
06:25 - 06:29
of their prototype because I also used their prototype as
06:29 - 06:33
a way to teach them how to take photos for
06:33 - 06:34
your products before you put them online.
06:35 - 06:39
So um whether they are gonna try to go with
06:39 - 06:42
amazon marketplace or etc.
06:42 - 06:43
Or instagram.
06:44 - 06:48
Um we've talked about using props for for the photos.
06:49 - 06:52
Um and then even having a model wear it and
06:52 - 06:53
then removing the background.
06:54 - 06:56
So okay, so some of the products that I've just
06:57 - 07:00
made with the machines so far just kind of practicing
07:01 - 07:01
this summer.
07:01 - 07:03
This was from the embroidery re machine.
07:04 - 07:07
Um I was talking to some students today about making
07:07 - 07:10
beanies because somebody was wearing a beanie that had embroidery.
07:11 - 07:12
This is a shirt that I made and I know
07:13 - 07:15
it's a cutie font with hearts.
07:16 - 07:19
So the students will make their own, they will choose
07:20 - 07:20
their own fonts.
07:21 - 07:25
Um so with the glow for budget cuts and engraved
07:26 - 07:30
wood acrylic um haven't tried metal yet but so this
07:30 - 07:32
was just a sign that I made.
07:32 - 07:39
Um uh this um is my Grand pop and so
07:40 - 07:42
I took a photo, removed the background and then engraved
07:43 - 07:44
it in wood.
07:44 - 07:46
And then the frame was cut by the globe forge
07:47 - 07:47
as well.
07:47 - 07:51
I um spray painted actually the glow forge also made
07:51 - 07:53
the holes for the string.
07:55 - 08:05
Um We can also make coasters, um ornaments, this is
08:05 - 08:08
the photo, this is the love guy.
08:09 - 08:14
Um Uh huh a acrylic.
08:15 - 08:17
So like um key chains.
08:17 - 08:18
I was talking to a student today.
08:18 - 08:24
She wants to make a key chain and this was
08:24 - 08:26
just a solid piece of red acrylic.
08:27 - 08:28
It's a license plate frame.
08:29 - 08:33
So um, I cut it out and put in some,
08:33 - 08:35
some wording the logos.
08:35 - 08:38
And then before I peeled off the, it's like a
08:38 - 08:39
masking tape.
08:39 - 08:43
Before I peeled off the tape, I used a sharpie
08:45 - 08:49
like oil paint pen and filled it in, filled in
08:49 - 08:51
the letters and the logo before I peeled it all.
08:52 - 08:55
So there's lots of neat things that the students are
08:56 - 08:56
going to be able to make.
08:57 - 08:59
This was a, you know, an existing frame that I
08:59 - 09:01
have and I have several of these but I did
09:01 - 09:04
and our engrave it with the glow forge mrs sheen.
09:05 - 09:07
So we're going to do lots of stuff in here.
09:08 - 09:12
So both the intro to business and entrepreneurship classes have
09:12 - 09:17
um, lab fees which I'm requesting to cover the supplies
09:18 - 09:18
for this stuff.
09:18 - 09:19
They're gonna make shirts.
09:20 - 09:23
Um um I don't have my visor out here.
09:24 - 09:26
Um, I brought it to school today, but we're also
09:26 - 09:27
gonna make hats.
09:27 - 09:29
So let me show you the room.
09:30 - 09:34
I was actually um here in the classroom for open
09:34 - 09:37
house um on monday night just because I wanted my
09:37 - 09:38
parents to be able to see the classroom.
09:39 - 09:41
So the equipment is over there.
09:44 - 09:45
Uh so this is it.
09:46 - 09:48
We also have a coffee station.
09:49 - 09:54
And so we are accepting donations of K pods and
09:55 - 09:56
coffee cups with lids.
09:58 - 10:00
Um T is not as popular.
10:01 - 10:04
There's always a request for sugar packets and creamer though.
10:04 - 10:08
I tried honey one day and it was gone like
10:08 - 10:10
before the school dance over.
10:10 - 10:13
So big supply for those types of things.
10:13 - 10:17
Anyway um I will send you the link for the
10:18 - 10:18
the lab fees.
10:18 - 10:20
Thank you so much to all of you who have
10:21 - 10:27
already paid and um trying to think if there was
10:27 - 10:30
anything else that I said the other night I went
10:30 - 10:31
through it so many times.
10:32 - 10:35
Oh I know um F.
10:36 - 10:36
B. L.
10:36 - 10:37
A. Future Business Leaders of America.
10:38 - 10:40
It's one of the clubs that I sponsor along with
10:40 - 10:44
future Georgia educators and uh I am encouraging your students
10:45 - 10:47
to sign up for it.
10:47 - 10:51
Um Not too many have so far but um but
10:52 - 10:57
it offers um field trips to um rallies and leadership
10:58 - 11:00
conferences and competitive events.
11:00 - 11:04
So there's a lot to offer um that will help
11:04 - 11:08
them with their um you know knowledge, leadership, professionalism and
11:09 - 11:12
then you know I always say to it's something good
11:12 - 11:14
that they can put on their resume especially if they
11:14 - 11:14
really dive in.
11:15 - 11:18
There's a lot of things that the the club offers,
11:18 - 11:18
it's kind of messy.
11:19 - 11:22
But anyway thanks so much for watching.
11:22 - 11:24
Sorry I have rambled 11 minutes.
11:26 - 11:26
Take care
