  1. Hi everyone.
  2. I'm ali and my speech is going to be on
  3. how mental health affects everybody and how it is,
  4. an everyday struggle for
  5. very, very many people.
  6. I'm just going to get started with this and
  7. to start off by saying that mental health is
  8. the most neglected problem in the developing world.
  9. I think that is very crazy to think about.
  10. We do not treat mental health as important as we do as physical health,
  11. and I think that
  12. it is just as important if not could be more important in many ways. So I think
  13. we just need to take it more seriously and I think I'm
  14. very guilty of not making it a higher priority for myself.
  15. So
  16. um you're going to hear me talk a lot about how it affects our minds.
  17. It really does affect everything we do.
  18. Um it affects a lot of the choices we make,
  19. how we relate to others and how we deal with stress.
  20. So really every day we're kind of
  21. making choices and
  22. dealing with our mental health.
  23. So, I found a quick little website. This was just the first one that popped up.
  24. Um one of, I can only imagine how many uh it was a link that you choose,
  25. kind of what you're going through, whether that be
  26. grief, depression, there's anxiety.
  27. Um
  28. Those were just
  29. the first three that may be stuck out to me
  30. and you click on it and it directly sends you to a therapist and
  31. um maybe let's say you're really going through it that day, um struggling,
  32. maybe couldn't get out of bed.
  33. I think it's very interesting that it's um you could
  34. do it out of the comfort of your own home.
  35. I think that's very
  36. cool and you're still able to connect with someone.
  37. Um even if you're really going through it, I thought that was really cool.
  38. I can only imagine how many other ones like it there are.
  39. So it really does affect all aspects of our lives.
  40. It can start from childhood and it can go all the way to adulthood. It does not
  41. discriminate. It does not matter your age, your gender,
  42. your social status, your income, your race, none of it matters.
  43. It truly affects everyone.
  44. Even the people you think are perfect.
  45. So to say there's been so many celebrities that have lost
  46. their lives and
  47. lost the battle that they struggled with
  48. with model. So it really is real and it's serious and
  49. it needs to be just taken more seriously. So
  50. it affects how we feel and how we act.
  51. I just don't understand why
  52. um
  53. since it is the most neglected problem,
  54. I don't understand why it's not taking it seriously.
  55. Um We wake up one day and let's say like our arms hurting,
  56. it's never felt like this before.
  57. Um You usually either look it up, you know, well there's a pain in my arm, you know,
  58. blah blah blah.
  59. What's wrong or you just go to the doctor and they help you.
  60. Why don't we do that with mental off like one day you wake up,
  61. you never felt like this before, A lot of stress, a lot of anxiety, you know
  62. um
  63. you have a
  64. a job interview at the end of the week, I don't know, just a lot of stress,
  65. why don't we talk to someone or
  66. just do things that
  67. help us relax and help us calm down um
  68. Just to be at peace, you know,
  69. just so we're not as stressed stress can drive people absolutely insane.
  70. Um
  71. And I think that people don't take it as serious enough.
  72. Mental health is serious enough as physical health is because
  73. they aren't physically hurting so they don't think they can't be mentally hurting,
  74. which isn't true.
  75. The common problems that start with mental health,
  76. it can start with anxiety and depression and it goes all the way to bigger things
  77. such as skits of,
  78. wow, I'm sorry, such as schizophrenia and bipolar depression disorder,
  79. which those are very serious.
  80. Excuse me, I'm sorry.
  81. Um
  82. I don't think people really understand what mental health truly is
  83. and
  84. I just don't think it's not like taught enough,
  85. it's not really like understood enough
  86. and the only way we can make a change is
  87. if we start educating people on what it really is
  88. and how serious or how important it truly is and
  89. then we'll hopefully start to see some type of change.
  90. Um
  91. I found in an interview,
  92. I'm sorry, I'm really getting
  93. out of myself
  94. um I saw an interview that someone said, um, he quote,
  95. I know now that if I felt there was something wrong, it's because there was,
  96. but I didn't understand mental health fully.
  97. It's a spectrum and you should be able to
  98. decide where and when you are on that spectrum.
  99. I don't think he could have put it into any better words. I think.
  100. Um,
  101. you know, you're going through it. Um,
  102. yeah,
  103. I think people think that if you're dealing with mental health,
  104. you're not automatically crazy.
  105. You know,
  106. maybe you just, you want to talk to someone, you're not automatically crazy. Just
  107. if you're struggling mentally,
  108. I think is what I'm trying to put it as. So there definitely is a spectrum,
  109. I don't think I worded that how I wanted to, but I'm going to continue
  110. just how there's a spectrum with autism. There is, you know,
  111. my mom's a special ed teacher. There's minor
  112. and it can go all the way to serious and more major.
  113. Um,
  114. autism as it is with mental. There is,
  115. you know, minor,
  116. maybe you struggle with it weekly or monthly and it
  117. can go all the way to every day every hour.
  118. So I, I like how you put that on the spectrum, I think that's very true.
  119. Um,
  120. you're thinking your mood and your behavior
  121. can be affected and definitely is affected
  122. when you're kind of going through mental health struggle
  123. or just mentally, your behavior is
  124. always affected.
  125. Um, I think everyone deserves to be happy and deserves to be in a good,
  126. comfortable or stable state of mind. So I wish that
  127. um
  128. me myself as well, I wish I would
  129. make this a higher priority and
  130. I think this is,
  131. I'm like persuading,
  132. is that even the right word, persuading myself into
  133. taking my mental health more seriously as well?
  134. Um
  135. You know, that's why there's so many people out there, they're trained,
  136. they have gone through the training and they know
  137. the skills and they know what it takes or
  138. um
  139. they just know what they're doing and they've seen it work,
  140. but they know it can benefit.
  141. So they're there to help you. There's so many people that are there to help you and
  142. maybe you could spread that and you could also tell that to other people and
  143. hopefully that really does work for someone.
  144. Um
  145. So I found some surveys, the rate of suicide was highest in middle aged white men,
  146. remember,
  147. And in 2019,
  148. million attempted suicide, and then also in 2019,
  149. Um suicide was the second leading cause of death from ages 10-34.
  150. An unintentional injury was the first one.
  151. Um So men definitely this is a struggle that everybody
  152. goes through and I think sometimes men feel like they'll be
  153. excuse me, look down at her, look differently.
  154. Not at all, don't be afraid to speak up.
  155. Um
  156. you'll feel like you'll be looked at in a better way
  157. by many because you are wanting to get the help and
  158. um you know, you need help.
  159. I think that's a big thing is admitting that you definitely need help
  160. on some steps. I found just um
  161. simple, simple little steps. I think it definitely starts with,
  162. it starts here um talking about your feelings, I think that's a big one,
  163. bottling that up
  164. does not make it any better.
  165. You're going to come to a point where you definitely explode and
  166. it's definitely going to be a big downhill from there.
  167. I think taking a break from things is a big one.
  168. me personally, I need to take a break from my phone. Social media is extremely toxic.
  169. Um I do nothing.
  170. I do not benefit in anyways being on my phone really
  171. all I do is compare myself to others and I just wish I had this wish I had that.
  172. I truly do not benefit
  173. from being on social media, social media at all.
  174. I think this one I liked was do stuff you're good at,
  175. you know how to do it, You know what you're doing?
  176. Maybe you can gain a little bit of confidence from this
  177. and you'll feel better about yourself in some type of way.
  178. So I kind of liked that one.
  179. Um
  180. getting enough sleep, I think that's very important
  181. and then getting physically active.
  182. That was just those were some of the many, like very very
  183. little of the many I found getting physically active. I like that one.
  184. Even like going for a little walk. I personally do that.
  185. I feel like it's a little therapy session for myself
  186. and I enjoy just
  187. being outside the fresh air. It's like a fresh little,
  188. I don't know, a little time for me. Um
  189. You know, just looking around seeing the nature, very peaceful and very calming.
  190. I feel very at peace
  191. with myself for that little short of time. So I really do enjoy that.
  192. So if you
  193. I can take anything away from this speech,
  194. I think that it's there's so many people that are out there to help you,
  195. they want you to be better.
  196. Um
  197. So do not be afraid at all to talk to anybody.
  198. There's people that care about you
  199. and
  200. stay positive.
  201. Thank you.
