00:01 - 00:07
Hi. My name is Eva Lower, and I'm going to be talking a little bit about me. My journey.
00:07 - 00:08
Why I am who I am,
00:09 - 00:10
my nursing philosophy,
00:10 - 00:14
my nursing contribution and where I see myself in the future.
00:15 - 00:22
I really wanted to use the sailboat theme to symbolize my journey of the sea,
00:22 - 00:27
symbolizing my life, always being unexpected, never knowing what's to come,
00:27 - 00:31
but learning to just sales instead of trying to control the wind.
00:31 - 00:32
Sure.
00:35 - 00:36
Mm.
00:37 - 00:40
So I was born here in Colorado, on Fort Carson.
00:40 - 00:41
I grew up an army brat,
00:41 - 00:45
which meant I moved everywhere and didn't stay in one place too long.
00:45 - 00:47
I always wanted to adopt
00:48 - 00:48
two
00:50 - 00:53
the new environments that I was in and learn to
00:53 - 00:56
adjust my sales where the unexpected winds would take me.
00:56 - 01:00
I lived in Germany most of my life, nine years, to be exact.
01:01 - 01:05
It's quickly become my home and really shaped part of who I am.
01:06 - 01:09
I also lived in a little country called Estonia,
01:09 - 01:15
which I didn't even think existed before I lived there, but they actually
01:15 - 01:16
fun fact.
01:16 - 01:17
They created
01:18 - 01:19
Skype,
01:19 - 01:22
so that's pretty cool.
01:22 - 01:23
My family,
01:23 - 01:26
though both my mom and dad are from Minnesota and
01:26 - 01:29
my siblings and I loved visiting there when we were
01:30 - 01:36
in Europe, and we absolutely adored the target.
01:36 - 01:41
We thought it was the coolest thing ever and that America was just so amazing.
01:41 - 01:42
Um,
01:43 - 01:45
and go Vikings.
01:46 - 01:47
Okay,
01:49 - 01:55
so, a little bit about my family. I was the only girl in a family with four brothers.
01:55 - 02:00
Um, I am engaged to in middle school, sweetheart, which is awesome.
02:00 - 02:06
He's really cool. Um, I have a dog named Luna. She's at the bottom right of the screen.
02:07 - 02:08
And, um,
02:09 - 02:13
I grew up an army brat. So my dad was in the army, and he is currently a colonel.
02:15 - 02:16
Mhm.
02:19 - 02:19
Yeah.
02:22 - 02:24
So why did I choose nursing?
02:25 - 02:27
Um, two reasons. Basically
02:27 - 02:33
first I knew growing up, I wanted to pursue a career in the military, but I didn't know
02:33 - 02:35
just yet that it would be as a nurse.
02:35 - 02:41
Uh, I'm in currently a cadet in the ROTC program here at U C C E s.
02:41 - 02:43
Um, you can see in that
02:44 - 02:45
far right that
02:46 - 02:49
me and my fiance are in it together.
02:49 - 02:50
So
02:51 - 02:53
I'm aspiring, I guess, to be
02:53 - 02:55
in the Army Nurse Corps.
02:55 - 02:56
I do not know
02:58 - 02:59
exactly
02:59 - 03:03
where it will take me. But as far as I know, that's where I want to be
03:03 - 03:04
as of now.
03:07 - 03:14
So one of the biggest reasons I became a nurse or I'm becoming a nurse, um,
03:14 - 03:15
was when I met my brother
03:16 - 03:17
Henry.
03:17 - 03:21
Um, he was born with a unilateral cleft lip and palate.
03:22 - 03:26
Um, if you don't know what that is, um, it's basically a birth condition.
03:26 - 03:29
Um, as you can see in the top left that effects?
03:30 - 03:30
Yeah.
03:31 - 03:32
Your lips
03:32 - 03:33
and palate.
03:33 - 03:34
Yeah,
03:34 - 03:37
It happens about one in every six
03:37 - 03:39
1600 babies.
03:39 - 03:41
Um, it really just
03:43 - 03:45
seeing him go through surgery and seeing him,
03:46 - 03:46
um,
03:46 - 03:50
endure all that as a little kid really
03:50 - 03:53
piqued my interest in nursing and more specifically,
03:53 - 03:56
preoperative patient care and pediatric nursing.
03:58 - 03:58
Yeah.
04:01 - 04:01
Okay.
04:03 - 04:03
Okay.
04:04 - 04:10
So my core values are family integrity, adaptability, awareness and discipline.
04:10 - 04:16
Family was always the one consistency I had in my life while moving every 2-3 years,
04:16 - 04:19
so it quickly became a core value for me.
04:19 - 04:23
Um, as we know, integrity is one of the most important values.
04:23 - 04:28
As a nurse, um, I try to implement it in every aspect of my life and
04:29 - 04:31
having to adapt to different environments
04:32 - 04:35
and moving all the time learning to make new friends and
04:36 - 04:39
speak different languages, and
04:39 - 04:41
it really became
04:43 - 04:46
adaptability really became a core value. For me,
04:46 - 04:50
awareness is one of the best core values you can adopt.
04:51 - 04:55
Um, it means paying attention to yourself, others the world around you,
04:56 - 04:58
emotions and situations.
04:59 - 05:01
And so that was one of the biggest ones for me.
05:02 - 05:04
The biggest one, however,
05:04 - 05:08
is discipline because it is the focused attitude of self control
05:09 - 05:12
that drives the systematic and consistent application
05:12 - 05:16
of blood sweat tears to get results.
05:16 - 05:17
Um,
05:17 - 05:19
it is a core value of mine because it is the epitome
05:19 - 05:23
of enduring intrinsic motivation that overcomes
05:23 - 05:25
consistent adversity that we all face.
05:31 - 05:35
So I wanted to come up with my own personal nursing philosophy.
05:36 - 05:38
But while researching and trying to figure out
05:39 - 05:44
what I truly thought, I came across Virginia's Virginia Henderson's need theory.
05:45 - 05:47
It states that I believe that the function
05:48 - 05:51
the nurse performs is primarily an independent one,
05:51 - 05:55
that of acting for the patient when he lacks knowledge, physical,
05:55 - 05:59
strange strength or the will to act for himself as he
05:59 - 06:04
would ordinarily act in health or in carrying out prescribed therapy.
06:05 - 06:08
This function is seen as complex and creative
06:08 - 06:11
as offering unlimited opportunity to apply the physical,
06:11 - 06:13
biological and social sciences
06:14 - 06:17
and the development of skills based on them.
06:20 - 06:21
Mhm.
06:22 - 06:25
So before I get into the domains, I believe that
06:27 - 06:31
what this has to do with me is all my core values.
06:31 - 06:34
Adaptability, awareness, discipline.
06:35 - 06:35
Yeah,
06:36 - 06:41
I see that tie into this theory. And, um, I agree with all the four domains
06:43 - 06:44
person,
06:44 - 06:45
Virginia
06:46 - 06:50
says At the most basic level, patients are individuals with bile.
06:50 - 06:54
Physio social needs who seek nursing care, however,
06:54 - 06:57
are not limited to illness care.
06:58 - 07:03
She explains that the patient's mind and body are interdependent and inseparable,
07:04 - 07:05
And there are one entity
07:06 - 07:08
and individuals achieve wholeness by maintaining
07:08 - 07:11
their physiological and emotional balance.
07:14 - 07:15
Mhm.
07:17 - 07:18
The health aspect,
07:19 - 07:21
she believes, is defined as
07:22 - 07:24
balance in all realms of human life.
07:25 - 07:25
Uh huh
07:26 - 07:29
is associated with independence or capacity to
07:29 - 07:32
carry out activities without any assistance.
07:32 - 07:34
She had 14 components of
07:35 - 07:39
She calls it the 14 components of her need theory.
07:39 - 07:42
Um, basically, just all these activities that
07:44 - 07:45
you need to carry out
07:46 - 07:48
the balance of your life.
07:49 - 07:50
For Henderson,
07:50 - 07:54
quality health is difficult because it can be impacted by numerous factors.
07:54 - 07:58
Age, cultural background, emotional balance, etcetera,
08:01 - 08:01
mhm.
08:04 - 08:05
The maintenance of environment
08:06 - 08:08
Beneficial to health is included as part of
08:08 - 08:11
the 14th moments of Henderson's need theory.
08:12 - 08:16
She believes that the nurse has a responsibility to perform to
08:16 - 08:20
provide an environment in which the patient can perform activity unaided.
08:22 - 08:25
She basically believes we want to give nursing care and
08:25 - 08:27
make sure that the patient is independent
08:27 - 08:30
and can perform activities on their own before
08:31 - 08:32
they leave.
08:36 - 08:37
So
08:38 - 08:43
the biggest element she tried to touch on was a nurse, she says.
08:43 - 08:44
And
08:44 - 08:45
all that.
08:45 - 08:49
She said she believes that the nurse has distinct function
08:49 - 08:52
and role to assist the patient and address their needs
08:54 - 08:57
While the nurses to assist patients who are incapable of
08:57 - 08:59
satisfying at least one of the 14 basic needs.
08:59 - 09:01
This care is temporary,
09:01 - 09:05
as the nurses are to make the patient independent soon as possible.
09:06 - 09:08
Um, one of the quotes
09:09 - 09:12
that I thought was really interesting.
09:12 - 09:13
That, she said,
09:13 - 09:16
was to get inside the patient's skin and supplement
09:16 - 09:19
his strength will or knowledge according to his needs.
09:20 - 09:22
Um, that's the epitome of her theory.
09:24 - 09:28
I also have two other quotes that I think, really
09:28 - 09:29
tie in
09:29 - 09:31
everything that she has to say about
09:32 - 09:34
what she believes. Her nursing philosophy is
09:34 - 09:39
one of them being the unique function of the nurses to assist the individual sick
09:39 - 09:41
or well in the performance of those
09:41 - 09:44
activities contributing to health or its recovery.
09:44 - 09:47
That he would perform unaided if he had necessary strength, will and knowledge.
09:48 - 09:48
And to do
09:49 - 09:53
this in such a way to help him gain independence as rapidly as possible.
09:53 - 09:53
Yeah,
09:54 - 09:56
the other one being the nurse
09:56 - 09:59
does for others what they would do for themselves if they had the strength,
09:59 - 10:01
the will and the knowledge.
10:01 - 10:03
But I go on to say that the nurse makes this
10:03 - 10:06
patient independent of him or her as soon as possible.
10:06 - 10:08
Basically, just
10:10 - 10:13
everything is temporary. She believes in the care.
10:13 - 10:17
She wants it to be the patient to be as independent as possible before
10:18 - 10:19
as soon as possible.
10:22 - 10:22
Mhm.
10:24 - 10:25
So
10:25 - 10:29
as a nurse, I really want to contribute
10:29 - 10:30
to the future
10:31 - 10:33
more than anything of nursing and health care.
10:33 - 10:36
Um, I want to make differences in people's lives.
10:36 - 10:37
Um,
10:37 - 10:41
I want to devote myself to the profession night and day and
10:41 - 10:44
provide patient care with a holistic approach of the mind and body,
10:48 - 10:52
embodying the unique function of nurses that Henderson identifies as being the
10:53 - 10:55
consciousness of the unconscious.
10:55 - 10:59
The love life for the suicidal, the leg of the amputee,
10:59 - 11:01
the eyes of the newly blind,
11:01 - 11:03
a means of locomotion for the infant
11:04 - 11:06
knowledge and confidence of the young
11:07 - 11:08
mother,
11:08 - 11:11
The mouthpiece for those two weeks or withdrawn to speak.
11:12 - 11:15
I really enjoy that quote by her,
11:16 - 11:17
Thank you
11:17 - 11:18
and my future,
11:19 - 11:22
Um, in the nursing corps
11:22 - 11:28
in the Army, I hope five years from now that's where I'll be, Um,
11:28 - 11:32
which means I have no clue where in the world I'm
11:32 - 11:34
going to be because the Army is going to station me
11:35 - 11:37
wherever they choose.
11:38 - 11:39
Um,
11:39 - 11:40
hopefully,
11:40 - 11:46
I'll be going back to school so I can achieve a further goal peri operative, nursing.
11:46 - 11:52
And most importantly, I want a family of my own. So I want
11:53 - 11:55
hopefully I have that fabulous from now.
11:57 - 12:01
So to tie in kind of my theme of this presentation,
12:02 - 12:06
we cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails by Thomas Benson,
12:11 - 12:13
and this is my reference,
12:14 - 12:16
and that is it. Thank you for
12:17 - 12:18
listening and
12:18 - 12:19
being part of
12:20 - 12:21
my nursing journey
