some community screams.

Um, this community,
01:09 - 01:13
this organization is located in high point north Carolina.
01:13 - 01:14

01:30 - 01:33
textile and business manufacturing,
01:34 - 01:37
many different educational and sports institutions
01:37 - 01:40
and resilient community leaders and residents.

Some areas to be improved education,
01:44 - 01:48
more affordable housing and more community involvement
01:48 - 01:50
with Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
01:50 - 01:54
Some rates that we decided to include are the poverty and
01:54 - 02:00
crime rates which are 17.8% of poverty and 23.8% of crime,
02:00 - 02:01

02:22 - 02:24
Also,
02:24 - 02:28

02:34 - 02:37
While as us in the community around Big Brother Big Sisters,
02:37 - 02:38
we had to get a complete
02:38 - 02:41
understanding of the community's physical characteristics,
02:41 - 02:46
geographical location, government, culture and assumptions.
02:47 - 02:49
Big Brother Big Sisters arrived in the tribe
02:50 - 02:53
originally claiming downtown Greensboro as its home
02:53 - 02:56
due to the expansion of Big Brother Big Sisters,
02:56 - 02:59
they moved to a new mentoring and central service center
02:59 - 03:04
which has upgraded technology and more space for the staff mentors and Children.
03:05 - 03:08
High point North Carolina acquired the new location of the organization
03:08 - 03:12
in November 2021 and celebrated by welcoming
03:12 - 03:14
each member with an outdoor movement night
03:15 - 03:17
when conducting the walking survey.
03:17 - 03:18
My partner and I
03:19 - 03:20
saw that there are not many homes
03:20 - 03:22
in their apartments surrounding the establishment.
03:23 - 03:27
However, there are some residential areas around the nearest school.
03:27 - 03:30
In this part of high point there are no signs of decay
03:30 - 03:34
being that it was very new and it is very well managed.
03:34 - 03:36
There are clean streets,
03:36 - 03:39
nice restaurants and the businesses are new and well count.
03:39 - 03:43
There is a park near the Big Brothers Big Sisters headquarters.
03:43 - 03:47
This park is Hope Hollow Festival Park which has a lakefront outdoor stage,
03:47 - 03:52
picnic shelter, barbecue grills, marinas and playgrounds for Children.
03:52 - 03:55
There are many common areas surrounding East Chester.
03:55 - 03:59
A few minutes away from Big Brother Big Sisters, there are two major hotspots.
04:00 - 04:04
The palladium in North Chester shopping centers and houses many restaurants,
04:04 - 04:06
stores and even a small medical plaza.
04:07 - 04:10
This medical plaza contains many service centers and urgent care,
04:10 - 04:12
a dentist and even a massage.
04:12 - 04:14
A massage parlor.
04:14 - 04:17
Transportation used in high point is mainly done
04:17 - 04:18
with the use of cars.
04:21 - 04:22
In the diagram,
04:22 - 04:25
we can see that the primary establishments
04:25 - 04:27
around the Big Brothers Big Sisters facility.
04:27 - 04:30
Each building is within a 10 mile radius of Big
04:30 - 04:35

04:41 - 04:44
Marathon gas station being 0.2 miles
04:44 - 04:47
tobacco and Vape shop being 0.5 miles.
04:47 - 04:49
Planet fitness being .3 miles
04:49 - 04:55

05:00 - 05:06
High point University being 1.7 miles and Mcdonald's being 5.7 miles
05:14 - 05:16
the perceptions of the interviewed
05:16 - 05:17
community leaders.
05:18 - 05:23
So I had the pleasure of meeting Chea Holden and Amy Lawson for them
05:23 - 05:25
to enlighten me on the many different
05:25 - 05:28
facts about the community surrounding this organization.
05:34 - 05:37
Amy Lawson is Kia Holden's supervisor.
05:37 - 05:40
She oversees the match support specialist and give them the
05:40 - 05:43
tools they need to succeed as a phenomenal mentor.
05:46 - 05:49
Kia Holden is a match support specialist who is someone that
05:49 - 05:53
provides support to the Bigs and littles in these programs.
05:53 - 05:56
She gives information on activities and holds match meetings
05:56 - 05:59
to collect information on how her matches are doing.
05:59 - 06:02
These two ladies expressed concerns of homelessness,
06:02 - 06:03
poverty
06:03 - 06:05
and insecurity and food insecurity.
06:05 - 06:08
When speaking about the families in their community.
06:08 - 06:12
They discussed with me the goals of the organization and it was to decrease poverty,
06:12 - 06:16
increased social emotional skills and increased school improvement.
06:16 - 06:20
They helped me understand that poverty stricken homes sometimes have
06:20 - 06:23
the lowest education due to the education of their parents.
06:23 - 06:26
If the parents felt that education was unnecessary,
06:26 - 06:28
then it would most likely not be a priority.
06:38 - 06:41
Moving on to the major strengths and weaknesses of Big Brothers
06:41 - 06:45
and Big Sisters and of high point north Carolina script.
06:45 - 06:48
Number one of Big Brothers Big Sisters at this program promotes social and
06:48 - 06:52
emotional development that builds resilience and promotes
06:52 - 06:54
mental and health and well being.
06:55 - 06:58
I was struggling with two strength number two of half
06:58 - 07:03
point community Resources which includes United Ways of Guilford and Forsyth
07:03 - 07:08
High Point University, Guilford Technical Community College Franklin College,
07:08 - 07:13
High Point Police Department, Boys and Girls Club of Guilford Local churches, U.
07:13 - 07:14
N. C. G.
07:14 - 07:20
Um North Carolina Central University and nine other area school sites in half point
07:20 - 07:21
um, weakness.
07:21 - 07:26
Number one of Big Brothers Big Sisters is the lack of parents support on weakness.
07:26 - 07:29
Number two of high point north Carolina is that the
07:29 - 07:32
crime rates and the poverty rates are extremely high.
07:34 - 07:38
Moving along to the recommendations of the Brothers and Big Sisters
07:39 - 07:43
recommendations to increase effectiveness and decrease problems in the
07:43 - 07:46
historical organization and community.
07:47 - 07:49
So our recommendations for this organization
07:49 - 07:53
include more age appropriate community participation.
07:53 - 07:54
Food drives,
07:54 - 07:57
family involvement activities and adding the job
07:57 - 07:59
of a community resource social worker.
08:00 - 08:02
More age appropriate community participation
08:03 - 08:05
would help the Children be excited about having
08:05 - 08:08
a big It would also increase community involvement
08:08 - 08:11
and possibly result in an increase of Children
08:11 - 08:12
in the program.
08:13 - 08:15
Food drives would decrease food insecurity and
08:15 - 08:17
provide the families of Big Brothers.
08:17 - 08:17
Big Sisters
08:18 - 08:19
with nutritious meals.
08:19 - 08:23
Lastly adding the job of a community resource social worker could
08:23 - 08:25
be helpful in order to make all of these things happen.
08:32 - 08:34
So thank you for your time.
08:34 - 08:37
And if you have any questions or you would like to reach out to Big
08:37 - 08:43
Brothers and Big Sisters to volunteer or to um supply them with any resources.
08:43 - 08:48
Um you can contact them or email them or you can reach out to the president for our ceo.
08:48 - 08:49
Thank you for your time again.
