  1. hello to all the adults in the room. My name is Ms Farias.
  2. This is my first year teaching kindergarten.
  3. I'm so excited to start this year with the students.
  4. Um I wanted to start first by talking a little bit about myself on the left side.
  5. You can see a picture of me in kindergarten.
  6. I thought it would be cool to share some of my interests.
  7. So when I was starting kindergarten, I really love to swim.
  8. I loved playing in my kitchen set,
  9. and I was obsessed with dressing up as these Bratz dolls.
  10. Today I really enjoy cooking and exercising,
  11. and I actually own a face painting company.
  12. One of my favorite things is seeing the kids reactions in the mirrors. It is so fun.
  13. But I also wanted to
  14. address today What are the expectations?
  15. What are the beliefs that I want to share with you guys in my classrooms?
  16. And what should you expect out of me? The teacher?
  17. And what do I expect out of the students?
  18. I learned very quickly in school about Massa's hierarchy,
  19. and I wanted to share what that means with you guys.
  20. So mass flow states that our needs dictate our behaviors,
  21. which means that if a student does not get a good amount of sleep,
  22. they're likely going to have less energy in class.
  23. Or, for example,
  24. a student might have a broken nail, and that could distract them from doing work.
  25. And so it's really important to me that a student's basic needs are met first,
  26. and then learning comes next.
  27. And so that means getting a Band aid for that hangnail or
  28. giving that students some extra time during quiet time to rest.
  29. Um, And so Mazzello agrees with me,
  30. saying that we should be meeting our students needs
  31. first because that will help them be better learners.
  32. And the whole goal is that students reach self actualization,
  33. which means that students reach their fullest potential and are motivated to do so.
  34. And so it's really important that students are successful in this classroom,
  35. and for them to be successful, basic needs need to be met,
  36. sociological needs need to be met, and there has to be
  37. these things in place so that they can reach their fullest potential.
  38. That means having a healthy breakfast and rest, and if you might question,
  39. But I have too busy of a schedule in the morning or we can't afford to get breakfast.
  40. Our school has a funded breakfast program.
  41. I think it's really important that starting from the first
  42. day you as the parent or the guardian and the adult
  43. responsible adults that a bedtime for your student,
  44. Um And then we can work together, Um,
  45. to also have quiet time for 10 minutes and have movement breaks to, um,
  46. help the students keep their energy when they need to have their energy kept.
  47. Also, release some energy.
  48. You'll be seeing that in the first few weeks we will be talking about
  49. social emotional learning on what it's like to be in a
  50. new school to what's the first day feelings like and,
  51. um,
  52. getting used to being around new students and new faces will also be
  53. having fire and safety drills for the first month or so of school.
  54. Um,
  55. they'll be bus pick up and drop off.
  56. And if you feel as though you will not be able to
  57. be able to pick up your kid or drop them off,
  58. we have bus systems in place as well as extended day.
  59. For parents who work extra.
  60. They're your student will be well fed while
  61. taking care of and will extend their learning.
  62. Um,
  63. it's very important for me that your student feels
  64. like they belong and are loved in this room.
  65. And that's why I have in place Student of the Week,
  66. which is where each student will be able to share
  67. something about themselves with the classroom that could be pictures,
  68. their favorite hobbies, toys and so on.
  69. And so each week
  70. a student will present about themselves.
  71. We also have a happy helper every day who will be the
  72. one that helps lead the classroom two specials and will work,
  73. Um, on morning meetings together with me.
  74. And that is one thing that I love to do with the students.
  75. We will be working on a reward system, which means that when students earn, um,
  76. a reward, they will be having some type of party or activity to celebrate.
  77. I want to start the everyday with music in the morning and movement,
  78. and I believe that having these things in place will really
  79. help students learn their best and reach that full potential.
  80. And we'll be continuing to work on self actualization.
  81. Um, through project based learning,
  82. which is basically doing hands on projects to learn that
  83. could be crafting that could be stem based work.
  84. We're also going to be working on social emotional learning.
  85. A lot of the times in our literacy programs
  86. we're going to be reading and then connecting with the
  87. reader on feelings will also be doing workshops and centers.
  88. Um,
  89. which I would love to incorporate history and
  90. science and math and make it multi disciplinary,
  91. which means taking different subjects and adding
  92. them to our workshops and centers.
  93. I'd like you to take a second to just look at the pyramid,
  94. which is the hierarchy of needs,
  95. which basically says that if we can meet basic needs and keep on building up,
  96. that our students are going to reach their full potential.
  97. And so think of you as the adult, what do you need to have a good day?
  98. And now think about your our students. What do they need to have a good day?
  99. Yeah,
  100. And with that I want to get into meeting this student here.
  101. I created the student, Uh,
  102. and this is our point of view of the student we
  103. just saw Paul's mom screaming at him during drop off.
  104. Paul is having difficulty completing his work and his yawning often.
  105. So what basic needs is Paul missing here?
  106. It seems like he's missing sleep.
  107. It seems like he might have some sociological needs
  108. not being met after being screamed at his mom.
  109. He might be feeling sad or insecure.
  110. And so how do we meet these needs?
  111. I, as a student would maybe pull Paul would possibly pull Paul aside and asked him,
  112. Is everything okay?
  113. I would work to give Paul some time to drink some water or move around so that he can
  114. get his energy level up.
  115. And those that is part of, um, meeting those needs that the students need.
  116. It's by and I promise I will be very diligent to
  117. be looking at your student's behavior to see where are these needs
  118. Are these needs being met? And if not, what can I do to help?
  119. Yeah.
  120. Next, I'd like to talk about classroom expectations.
  121. Um, you'll see that this is what to expect during the first month of school.
  122. Will be meeting teachers and classmates and doing fun,
  123. meet and greets with each other will be creating a sense of belonging and purpose,
  124. and that is very important to me.
  125. Um, I'll go a little bit further on on how we're going to do that in a second.
  126. We'll also be touring the school. So what does our classroom look like?
  127. What are the materials inside our classroom? Um, where's the lunch room?
  128. How do we get to the playground
  129. who are are special teachers and what we do during
  130. specials will also be practicing routines like our schedule.
  131. How do we get to school? How do we go?
  132. Oh, I mean, leave school. We'll be working on bathroom procedures.
  133. Lining up in lunch will also be setting classroom expectations as a class.
  134. I'll have some expectations on,
  135. um, the first day of school,
  136. but we'll be adding onto these expectations as they come about.
  137. So now for the how, um, as I mentioned,
  138. we'll have a student of the week where the student will bring in a bag
  139. full of things all about themselves and share with the class.
  140. I also hope to do a family tree where you will be represented on that tree,
  141. and they can remember who's back home and who they're
  142. going back home to during After they're learning day,
  143. we'll be working on hopes and dreams.
  144. So what's our hopes and dreams for our school and our friends?
  145. And when we grew up in the Earth,
  146. I love doing scavenger hunts and movement around the school as much as possible.
  147. Learning in different environments is very beneficial for the students,
  148. and so we'll be doing a school scavenger hunt during the first month.
  149. We also do team building games.
  150. As you guys can see. Some of them are here pictured.
  151. Yeah,
  152. next, I'd like to talk about behavior response.
  153. Um, I've learned that behavior is communication.
  154. If a student is behaving some type of way
  155. because they have something to say is because either
  156. a need is being met or it's not being met and often times just like this iceberg.
  157. All we see is the unexpected behavior.
  158. I bet US parents have seen a lot of unexpected behavior at the grocery store,
  159. but that also means that
  160. there's a surface level and underneath level that we might not be seeing.
  161. So a lot of the times misbehaviors
  162. are happening because there's a biological or emotional
  163. or social need that's not being met.
  164. And so what we then see is misbehaviors or unexpected behaviors.
  165. I once watched this video called dear Teachers, where students communicate
  166. why they behave in such a way and how this teacher can
  167. can improve in seeing how they behave
  168. and noticing that a lot of their behaviors is not due to them
  169. actually not paying attention in class or not being able to learn.
  170. But it's just that some needs are not being met. And so I would like to address that.
  171. I will do not punish in this room, Um, but I do reinforce positive behavior,
  172. and I do want to teach students self regulation.
  173. And so one of those things look like
  174. some of the strategies or approaches. I will be using our when then statements.
  175. So, for example, having a student who
  176. is really angry because someone took away their toy or because
  177. you are talking to the group and they want to talk,
  178. um, without raising their hand.
  179. Um, so in this instance, I could say when you speak to me in a calmer voice,
  180. then we can talk this through.
  181. Um,
  182. I'm setting the expectations and hoping that then when the expectations are set
  183. that they will meet the expectations and then we can talk through.
  184. There's also an approach called pre correcting and prompting,
  185. which is reminding students of behavior
  186. expectations before potential behavior problems.
  187. And these are great strategies that you guys can use at home.
  188. And if we work together to use them at school and at home, they will be very,
  189. very beneficial for the students.
  190. So think of these students before they get to lunch.
  191. It's important that I remind them to get in
  192. line when they're going to get their lunch,
  193. that they stay in line.
  194. When they sit down,
  195. they eat at their assigned spots and that they clean up after themselves.
  196. Um, and I will be modeling this during the first few weeks of school as well.
  197. Some cute kids high in these pictures.
  198. Lastly, one of my favorite things that I do is partner parent partnerships,
  199. and that includes you guys, my lovely adults.
  200. I would love to partner with you to support our students.
  201. Much of our partnerships
  202. well look like constant communication with each other.
  203. It might also look like volunteering for synapse
  204. or being involved in your students learning,
  205. and you can do that through the monthly newsletters.
  206. I'll be sending monthly newsletters to keep you
  207. updated on what your student is learning about,
  208. as well as if there's any needs for the classroom and what you can do.
  209. Some resources that you can use to keep
  210. the students learning going on throughout the year,
  211. we have something called Seesaw.
  212. Um, it's an act that you can use to look at your student's work
  213. as well as communicate with me If there's any needs. I would love to meet an email.
  214. Any of you. Um, I do say that I can have two parent emails, Um, a day maximum.
  215. This is because I have a lot of parents and I would
  216. love for us to have our communication be face to face.
  217. That would be very helpful. Um, I'm always willing to call rather than email,
  218. but my email is right there for you guys, um, to use at any time to emails a day, please.
  219. I'd also want to include handmade class books where you will have
  220. the opportunity to leave a message in the book to the class.
  221. Um,
  222. either talking about what you liked in the book or a lesson you learned from the book,
  223. and we'll be doing several different books for you, for
  224. you adults to be engaging with us. I also love to do volunteer teaching and crafting.
  225. So if there's something that you'd love to teach the craft to teach the class,
  226. I would love to have you as a volunteer
  227. to come teach about a holiday or a specific lesson
  228. that you think would be interesting for the kids to learn.
  229. Science based, history based math based please let me know if you would like to.
  230. We have a volunteer sign up sheet that you can sign up.
  231. We also will be doing student led readers either all throughout the year.
  232. Um, we work on fairy tales.
  233. So as you can see, these students here are talking about the three Billy goats,
  234. Um,
  235. and so I would love parents to volunteer
  236. to make costumes to help students memorize lines.
  237. And, you know, the treats are always good to.
  238. So if you're interested in those things, please let me know,
  239. and I would love to have you help out.
  240. And so I want to say thank you. Once again, I'm really excited.
  241. And I hope that we that this is not the last time we see each other,
  242. but that we see each other throughout the school year and can keep talking.
  243. Thank you very, very much.
