00:01 - 00:03
Hi again, it's Virginia mcewan.
00:03 - 00:06
And this is week four of the Pediatric Pain
00:06 - 00:08
Series that we're doing virtually as a group.
00:09 - 00:15
And today's session, we are going to the island paradise. So
00:15 - 00:20
let us dive right in. That sounds like a great place to go right about now.
00:20 - 00:26
And in today's session, we're gonna be looking at three different techniques uh
00:26 - 00:26
and,
00:27 - 00:29
and test drive them really in the session today
00:30 - 00:33
to see if any of these things are helpful for you
00:34 - 00:34
to
00:35 - 00:37
manage some of your pain symptoms.
00:38 - 00:38
Now,
00:39 - 00:40
all of these things
00:41 - 00:43
work really, really well,
00:43 - 00:46
but they don't work well for everyone. So,
00:46 - 00:50
and the other thing that's important is doing it once isn't necessarily
00:51 - 00:55
the best way to decide if it's something that works for you or not.
00:55 - 00:56
So,
00:56 - 01:00
what we generally suggest for all of you when you're working through these things is
01:00 - 01:04
that even if you think the first time you try one of these techniques to
01:05 - 01:06
unwind from your pain,
01:07 - 01:10
if you feel like the first time it doesn't jive with you
01:10 - 01:16
do do give it another couple of goes like give it a few tries before you're like, no,
01:16 - 01:17
no, this just isn't for me,
01:17 - 01:21
it doesn't help me or I don't like how I feel doing it or whatever the case is,
01:22 - 01:25
there is probably going to be one or more
01:25 - 01:28
of these things that work specifically for you.
01:28 - 01:30
But if for you,
01:30 - 01:36
it's one thing uh only then then to just stick with what actually works well for you.
01:36 - 01:37
But
01:37 - 01:39
it is super important that you give each of these
01:39 - 01:43
things a few attempts before you make that decision.
01:44 - 01:48
So we're gonna start today with some abdominal breathing.
01:49 - 01:54
And this is basically something where you want to
01:55 - 01:57
focus on your breath.
01:57 - 01:57
And
01:58 - 02:03
this is often where we start when we're talking about many different kinds of pain.
02:03 - 02:04
Um
02:04 - 02:09
But it's one that I find especially critical if you have pain in the core of your body.
02:09 - 02:10
Ok?
02:10 - 02:12
And the way in which we
02:13 - 02:16
teach people to go about this is to find a comfortable position,
02:17 - 02:20
whether that's sitting or whether that's laying flat
02:20 - 02:25
with one hand on your chest, kind of over your heart and one on your belly,
02:26 - 02:28
you're going to breathe in through your nose, counting to five,
02:28 - 02:32
filling your belly with air, feeling the bottom hand move out
02:32 - 02:33
and
02:33 - 02:36
I'm gonna go through this, but then we're gonna actually do one
02:37 - 02:39
with a video link.
02:39 - 02:42
So I'm gonna kind of go through it quickly,
02:42 - 02:44
but I just want to give you a sense like this is
02:44 - 02:46
a way of doing it that they talk about in the,
02:46 - 02:47
in the app as well.
02:48 - 02:51
Now when you breathe in through your nose and count to five,
02:51 - 02:54
you're going to really focus on that belly as a balloon almost.
02:54 - 02:56
You want to envision that there's a balloon inside your belly so
02:56 - 02:59
much so that you can feel your bottom hand move out.
02:59 - 03:01
And then when you've got that balloon in your belly,
03:01 - 03:04
you're going to hold your breath and you're going to count to five.
03:04 - 03:05
Then when you breathe out,
03:05 - 03:08
you're going to be breathing through your mouth through puckered lips.
03:08 - 03:11
Kind of like almost. So you're trying to blow through a straw
03:12 - 03:14
and let your belly slowly deflate.
03:15 - 03:17
Imagine that balloon slowly
03:17 - 03:18
um
03:18 - 03:22
kind of coming down and shrinking in size for an eight count.
03:22 - 03:26
So you want to hold that breath and let it out much slower
03:26 - 03:28
overall than how much
03:29 - 03:31
it or how long it took you to get that breath in.
03:32 - 03:33
And as you breathe out,
03:34 - 03:36
you may feel the muscle tension flow out of your body.
03:36 - 03:40
But I also want you to try and imagine that that's
03:40 - 03:43
also happening to or tell yourself that that's happening too.
03:44 - 03:48
You're gonna do that several times. It's a suggested up to 10 times
03:48 - 03:49
every time you do that,
03:50 - 03:54
you should notice how your body feels more relaxed with each breath out.
03:54 - 03:58
Now, this isn't just like some hocus pocus like there's real science to this too.
03:58 - 04:03
So we know that certain things change your heart rate. Can change,
04:03 - 04:08
your blood vessels will relax and, and blood will flow more freely.
04:08 - 04:10
It also affects your nervous system.
04:10 - 04:12
So when you're moving your diaphragm like that,
04:12 - 04:15
it's kind of like massaging part of that nervous system.
04:15 - 04:18
And then part of that is your vagus nerve,
04:18 - 04:20
your vagus nerve is this really big nerve that goes to your
04:20 - 04:24
lungs and your belly and it's in charge of rest and digest.
04:24 - 04:28
So when we talked about fight or flight in the first week,
04:29 - 04:32
this is sort of the counterbalance to that fight or flight system.
04:32 - 04:35
So every time we do these deep breathing exercises,
04:35 - 04:38
it's kind of like stimulating that vagus nerve
04:39 - 04:45
and, and telling it to go more and more and more into that rest and digest mode.
04:45 - 04:47
So where your body is truly relaxed.
04:47 - 04:48
OK.
04:48 - 04:51
So we are going to dive right in.
04:55 - 04:56
Now, during the live session,
04:56 - 05:01
we are actively going through this breathing exercise
05:01 - 05:05
with the guidance of someone on the youtube video
05:06 - 05:08
for the sake of
05:11 - 05:13
copyright, we actually can't
05:13 - 05:17
record a session that plays a youtube video at the same time.
05:18 - 05:21
So you are going to be able to access this link
05:23 - 05:27
in the links that are sent to you when you miss this session.
05:31 - 05:33
The next technique that we're going to
05:33 - 05:36
practice is called progressive muscle relaxation.
05:37 - 05:43
I remember the first time I tried this when I wasn't actually much older than
05:43 - 05:48
you guys and remember thinking how profoundly relaxing it was. So
05:48 - 05:50
this does work.
05:51 - 05:54
The pain that a lot of people experience
05:54 - 05:58
naturally causes your muscles to tense up. In many cases,
05:59 - 06:02
this is a natural response of your body trying to protect
06:02 - 06:07
you from either overstretching or injuring the body part that hurts.
06:07 - 06:09
The other thing that can lead to tension
06:09 - 06:12
is stress in our lives and negative feelings.
06:13 - 06:16
So, with progressive muscle relaxation,
06:16 - 06:19
we're actually actively paying attention to
06:19 - 06:21
different parts of our body
06:21 - 06:23
and then we're tensing
06:23 - 06:24
those muscles
06:25 - 06:25
and
06:26 - 06:30
once we've tensed them, then we actively relax them
06:31 - 06:34
and it often starts from the head and moves down to the toes.
06:34 - 06:37
So the steps of this type of technique
06:37 - 06:39
are the number one tense.
06:40 - 06:41
Number two, isolate
06:42 - 06:44
the area you're focusing on,
06:45 - 06:47
you're gonna concentrate on that area
06:47 - 06:50
and then you're gonna let it go and relax.
06:52 - 06:53
So again,
06:54 - 06:58
the youtube link for this video for you to go through, this
06:59 - 07:04
is going to be sent to you with the session recording
07:04 - 07:05
so that you can
07:06 - 07:07
go through that on your own.
07:14 - 07:18
So this is the link on the video. Now, of course, the app also has
07:19 - 07:21
a progressive muscle relaxation exercise.
07:22 - 07:24
We've included a different one just to give you
07:24 - 07:27
a sense that there are lots of different resources,
07:27 - 07:28
that kind of do the same thing.
07:28 - 07:31
So if you find you like the one on the app better, that's great.
07:31 - 07:33
You can do that as many times as you want.
07:33 - 07:35
If you like the one online better that you
07:35 - 07:38
may even find other uh progressive muscle relaxation,
07:39 - 07:42
guided videos on youtube that you like better.
07:45 - 07:47
The last thing that
07:47 - 07:53
we're going to talk about today in terms of tools that can help us relax
07:53 - 07:56
is the concept of imagery.
07:56 - 08:00
And what this means is using your imagination to move your attention
08:00 - 08:04
from an unpleasant thought or feeling to a more pleasant one.
08:05 - 08:10
So you can actually build in your mind and, and not everybody actually, again,
08:10 - 08:12
I should say preface this by saying that
08:12 - 08:14
not everybody can imagine things in their minds.
08:14 - 08:17
Some people don't have that visual ability to
08:17 - 08:21
have a what's called a mind's eye or have that picture in your mind.
08:22 - 08:26
But for those people who can, if you uh are able to,
08:26 - 08:31
then this is really where you're going to potentially create AAA
08:31 - 08:36
rich imaginary scene where where you're using all of your senses
08:37 - 08:37
to
08:38 - 08:40
transport yourself to somewhere.
08:40 - 08:41
Uh
08:41 - 08:42
that is
08:43 - 08:46
a safe or a comforting place for you.
08:46 - 08:50
And you're going to do this by thinking about what you're hearing in that place.
08:50 - 08:55
Like if we are on an island, are you hearing the ocean waves
08:56 - 08:57
in the background?
08:57 - 08:59
What are you seeing? Are you seeing
08:59 - 09:05
beautiful beach, beautiful, like beautiful sky, um beautiful forest.
09:05 - 09:08
Like it doesn't have to be an island paradise.
09:08 - 09:12
It's, it's a space that is a comforting place for you.
09:13 - 09:18
You're gonna imagine what you smell. Do you smell the campfire if you're in a forest.
09:18 - 09:20
Do you smell the ocean
09:21 - 09:23
and then things that you might taste,
09:24 - 09:26
uh, like, what might you
09:26 - 09:29
imagine, like if it's, if it's a, um,
09:29 - 09:29
a
09:29 - 09:31
cold winter day,
09:31 - 09:34
maybe you're imagining having a hot cocoa by a
09:34 - 09:37
fire and thinking about the sounds of the fire.
09:37 - 09:42
Um, what are you touching or feeling in that area? Is it the sand between your toes?
09:42 - 09:45
Is it the warmth from the fire? What,
09:45 - 09:47
wherever your space is
09:48 - 09:51
you wanna kind of think about all of those five senses.
09:52 - 09:55
So this could be a real place or it could be
09:55 - 09:58
an imaginary place or favorite place.
09:58 - 09:59
And
10:00 - 10:02
sometimes it is uh kind of um
10:03 - 10:08
more encouraging to think about warm images that tends to help with relaxation.
10:08 - 10:11
So you'll notice even though I mentioned like a cold day,
10:11 - 10:15
I talked about a hot chocolate with marshmallows or,
10:15 - 10:17
you know, being sitting next to a fire, right?
10:17 - 10:20
Those kinds of things are often quite helpful
10:20 - 10:28
and I have to say there's a fair amount of science in this as well. So there's um
10:28 - 10:31
even so much evidence behind this kind of thing
10:31 - 10:35
that you can use this to um hypnotize people.
10:35 - 10:39
And this is how often how those kinds of things start is by
10:39 - 10:40
using
10:40 - 10:43
that person's own mental ability to
10:43 - 10:45
um suggest
10:46 - 10:49
a different experience than what they're currently feeling.
10:49 - 10:53
And I've actually used this when I've had to do procedures with,
10:53 - 10:57
with kids that are difficult for kids
10:57 - 11:01
um with some good success in a lot of cases
11:01 - 11:05
uh where I was able to, to help somebody kind of
11:05 - 11:09
think about being somewhere else and then as a result, get through something
11:09 - 11:11
that was difficult.
11:11 - 11:16
Um So as an example, like if I've had to do a vaccination, that kind of thing,
11:16 - 11:19
taking that little bit of time to
11:19 - 11:20
try and
11:21 - 11:23
use imagery has,
11:24 - 11:28
has definitely got value to it for those of you that this
11:28 - 11:29
is
11:30 - 11:32
something that works well for you.
11:33 - 11:39
So again, uh a video link will be included in the links um
11:39 - 11:42
along with this session recording if you've missed it and
11:42 - 11:45
you're not able to go through it with us um
11:46 - 11:48
in the live virtual session today.
11:49 - 11:51
So and again,
11:51 - 11:55
you may not like this one as much as the one in the app or you may find other ones.
11:55 - 11:58
So this is by no means the only options you have,
11:58 - 12:02
it's just meant to kind of give be a starting point.
12:04 - 12:05
So
12:06 - 12:09
that sort of is uh the quick
12:10 - 12:13
uh version of the of the live session.
12:13 - 12:14
Obviously,
12:14 - 12:16
I would ask that you go through each of those
12:16 - 12:18
links and try and work on some of these things.
12:18 - 12:22
We want you to practice all of these relaxation techniques,
12:22 - 12:24
at least one of them in a day.
12:25 - 12:26
And
12:26 - 12:31
yeah, repetition is the key here. Like if, if try and do
12:32 - 12:35
a technique a few times really before you decide
12:36 - 12:38
that it's a yay or a Nay.
12:39 - 12:42
And we'll talk about what you guys thought or which one was your favorite.
12:42 - 12:45
We'll maybe do a poll and see who's who's was
12:45 - 12:50
or who found which one agreed with them the best next week.
12:50 - 12:51
Um
12:51 - 12:52
Again,
12:52 - 12:54
this session is usually delivered by a counselor who
12:54 - 12:58
has years of experience helping people with mindfulness and,
12:59 - 13:01
and um working through tech
13:01 - 13:03
techniques like this. So,
13:03 - 13:04
um
13:05 - 13:08
yeah, if you have any questions around that, feel free to,
13:08 - 13:10
to share those questions at your next session,
13:10 - 13:13
we'll do our best to try and answer them for you.
13:14 - 13:16
OK? So this is
13:16 - 13:22
again, it's week, that's week four actually. So I am signing out.
13:22 - 13:24
Thanks again for watching
13:24 - 13:28
and we'll see you next week. Take care guys.
