00:01 - 00:02
Hello everyone.
00:03 - 00:06
Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to present
00:06 - 00:11
my research at 35th asian Association of Open Universities conference.
00:11 - 00:14
My name is Cameron mir and I'm working in Islamic
00:14 - 00:17
Open University as assistant director I. T.
00:17 - 00:23
From past 9.5 years and I'm also doing my PhD in remote sensing and G. I. S.
00:23 - 00:26
From National University of Science and Technology.
00:26 - 00:30
And my research area revolves around educational
00:30 - 00:33
technology special learning analytics and model.
00:34 - 00:38
I'm an active member of asian Association of Open Use this conference
00:38 - 00:42
and I'm also individual member of modal user association and I.
00:42 - 00:43
C. D. E. As well.
00:45 - 00:48
So the topic of my presentation is design and
00:48 - 00:52
implementation of special learning analytics in distance education.
00:52 - 00:55
As you know like learning analytics is one of the
00:55 - 01:00
popular terminology and research area in which the researchers are working
01:00 - 01:01
what I've included.
01:01 - 01:04
The new thing in it is the special component which
01:04 - 01:08
is coming from the geographical information and system feel.
01:08 - 01:11
So it will make it special learning analytics.
01:11 - 01:14
So in this research we will see how we can
01:14 - 01:18
use special learning analytics to improve the quality of education.
01:21 - 01:23
So my research is backed by
01:24 - 01:25
the quality of education U. N.
01:25 - 01:29
Goal number four which says to ensure inclusive and equitable
01:29 - 01:33
quality of education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
01:34 - 01:37
And the statistics which are backed by S. D.
01:37 - 01:40
G4 are very alarming as we can see there are
01:40 - 01:45
more than 22.8 million Children who are out of school
01:46 - 01:50
And also around 617 million Children and adults
01:50 - 01:53
who lack minimum professions in reading and mathematics.
01:53 - 01:58
Also, if you look at the indicators in our area of Asia,
01:58 - 02:03
all of them are very alarming for all of us so that
02:03 - 02:07
we need to really need to work in improving the quality of education
02:09 - 02:12
so how we can solve this quality problem.
02:13 - 02:16
This picture is depicting like the first one,
02:16 - 02:20
if you can see the formal education system is just like a small car,
02:20 - 02:24
it can only accommodate few persons, few people who can afford
02:25 - 02:27
or few facilities that government can afford
02:27 - 02:29
in both sides.
02:29 - 02:29
So
02:30 - 02:31
through this
02:31 - 02:34
left side we cannot solve the problem of masses.
02:35 - 02:37
There comes the need of the conventional
02:37 - 02:40
of classical distance education which are being
02:40 - 02:44
like many open new cities of Asia and and all all around the world.
02:44 - 02:49
They're working hard to uh to improve and to
02:49 - 02:51
provide the quality of education at the doorstep.
02:52 - 02:53
But again
02:53 - 02:56
the problems in conventional distance education are
02:57 - 02:59
like the efficiency and the slowness.
02:59 - 03:04
So without using technology we cannot give
03:04 - 03:06
the quality of education in minimum time.
03:06 - 03:11
So the only option left here is the online learning or the learning,
03:11 - 03:15
you can say using technology or we can say the blended learning using technology.
03:20 - 03:25
So the distance education as all of you know that it is playing very vital role
03:25 - 03:29
in promoting education and my research area or
03:29 - 03:31
my application of this special learning analytics.
03:31 - 03:33
I have applied this on Islamic
03:33 - 03:34
open University.
03:35 - 03:35
So
03:36 - 03:38
city as an introduction as you know,
03:38 - 03:43
it's one of the mega Open University having more than one million students in a year
03:44 - 03:51
A. I. O. has more than 240,000 teachers which belong to like all over the country.
03:51 - 03:55
And it has more than 2000 courses and more than 50 regional campuses.
03:55 - 03:58
So there's a lot of special components special data which
03:58 - 04:03
can be analyzed um for improving the quality of education.
04:04 - 04:09
The study area for this specific research is the province of punjab.
04:09 - 04:13
This is the one of the province of one of the highly populated province of Pakistan.
04:13 - 04:16
And the data is from
04:17 - 04:24
In autumn 20 there around more than 239,000 students which belong to Punjab region.
04:24 - 04:31
And this map you can see the clusters of enrollment in each region of Islamic
04:31 - 04:32
University.
04:35 - 04:39
So the objective of my research was to map the scoring
04:39 - 04:43
patterns of distance learning students of punjab province and to see
04:44 - 04:47
if there is any data,
04:47 - 04:50
if there is any insight which can give
04:50 - 04:53
us insight to improve the quality of education.
04:54 - 04:58
The second objective was to identify the special correlation between
04:58 - 05:02
education and socioeconomic indicators and scoring patterns in each region.
05:02 - 05:04
Province of punjab province.
05:05 - 05:08
So the third objective was to apply classical and
05:08 - 05:12
special regulation to explain the relationship between these indicators
05:13 - 05:14
coming to the methodology.
05:15 - 05:20
So initially the data was collected for the scoring patterns which was the
05:20 - 05:23
primary data and the secondary data included
05:23 - 05:26
explanatory variables included the literacy rate,
05:26 - 05:30
the socioeconomic variables and the and the
05:30 - 05:34
other indicators of uh of that province.
05:34 - 05:37
So data standardization was done.
05:37 - 05:41
Then the data with geo visualization was applied in different G. I. S.
05:41 - 05:44
Softwares to see the visual patterns among
05:44 - 05:46
all the regions.
05:47 - 05:49
In the third step the special auto
05:49 - 05:52
correlations and different pattern analysis was analyzed.
05:52 - 05:56
And in last it was observed there was an inflated scoring patterns.
05:56 - 06:01
And to predict the scoring. The scoring model
06:04 - 06:07
variables included in my study were the average
06:07 - 06:09
assignment marks which which I'm calling it a
06:09 - 06:13
scoring student scores and the independent variables which
06:13 - 06:17
are the external variables which included educational indicators,
06:17 - 06:20
socioeconomic indicators, covid indicator and H.
06:20 - 06:22
D. I. Human development index
06:24 - 06:25
within the educational indicators.
06:25 - 06:28
It included the literacy rate, the resource persons,
06:28 - 06:31
the number of workshops and the retention score.
06:32 - 06:35
The socio economic parameters included a lot
06:35 - 06:39
of parameters for example the primary enrollment,
06:39 - 06:43
the secondary enrolment, household access to the water hospital bears.
06:43 - 06:48
And it was it was having a cumulative score which which was called a Z. Score.
06:49 - 06:55
Also we included the covid index derivations which was conducted by another study.
06:55 - 07:00
So it was also having like cumulative data of all the provinces,
07:00 - 07:03
all the districts which we correlated with the scoring patterns.
07:04 - 07:08
This is the covid temporal map which is based on some other study.
07:10 - 07:11
Another indicator which was included,
07:11 - 07:16
it was human development index and it is these are the factors which
07:16 - 07:20
were considered by the UNDP for derivation of human development index which are the
07:20 - 07:22
standard of living based on the grouse
07:22 - 07:25
national income and healthy life corresponding to
07:25 - 07:28
the life expectancy index and the knowledge according to the years of schooling.
07:30 - 07:34
Now coming to the interesting part of the study which is the result.
07:34 - 07:37
Now in this you can see different maps which
07:37 - 07:41
were generated based on the the special letter.
07:42 - 07:46
This map is showing you the general population, the people of population of
07:46 - 07:47
in each province.
07:47 - 07:50
And you can see there is a pattern, there's a visual pattern,
07:50 - 07:52
you can see that in the middle,
07:53 - 07:56
in the bottom and in upside you can see different patterns of population.
07:58 - 08:01
Again if you look at the literacy rate this is also
08:01 - 08:04
a secondary or external data which is published by the government
08:05 - 08:10
and you can see there is a patron in the provinces which belong to the southern path.
08:10 - 08:14
They have loaded Tracy and
08:15 - 08:18
regions which are in the northern side of the punjab province,
08:18 - 08:20
they have like high literacy rate.
08:21 - 08:24
Also if you look at the past passing percentage which
08:24 - 08:27
is like specific information of like distance learning students.
08:27 - 08:32
So again there is a pattern but the pattern is quite like opposite.
08:32 - 08:34
If you can see the southern part they have
08:34 - 08:37
like more passing percentage as compared to them.
08:37 - 08:38
Northern part.
08:40 - 08:41
Also if you look at
08:42 - 08:43
the scoring pattern
08:44 - 08:48
of the punjab province you can see there is a pattern in a visually
08:48 - 08:53
visually we can see the southern belles of the southern part of the province.
08:53 - 08:54
They have like high
08:55 - 08:58
average score of assignments, average scoring patterns.
08:58 - 09:02
Whereas the regions which belong to the northern side,
09:02 - 09:05
they have slightly less average score.
09:07 - 09:08
Also,
09:08 - 09:10
if we look at the other educational indicators
09:10 - 09:12
which are published by some other studies,
09:12 - 09:16
if you look at the learning score, overall learning score of the punjab province,
09:16 - 09:18
again, there is a pattern.
09:19 - 09:24
If you look at the retention score again you can see there is a pattern
09:25 - 09:29
and the gender score. Again, you can see there is a pattern.
09:30 - 09:35
Now let us correlate this pattern with different um
09:35 - 09:40
indicators like these maps are showing you the socioeconomic, the covid cases,
09:40 - 09:41
energy index and HD I index.
09:41 - 09:46
Again every factor has some pattern in in it in itself as well.
09:47 - 09:48
Now if we
09:49 - 09:53
do the scatter plot between the average assignment and literacy, you can see
09:54 - 09:57
there is an inverse of negative correlation
09:57 - 09:59
between the scoring pattern and the literacy,
09:59 - 10:00
the literacy rate
10:00 - 10:03
increasing, the average score is also
10:04 - 10:05
decreasing.
10:05 - 10:10
Also if you like that if the literacy rate is low,
10:10 - 10:13
the average assignment score is getting higher.
10:13 - 10:15
Also if you look at
10:16 - 10:17
the retention score and literacy,
10:17 - 10:21
so there is a direct or positive correlation high
10:21 - 10:24
highly positive correlation between literacy and the retention score.
10:28 - 10:34
If you look at the average score correlation chart at like 0.05 significant values.
10:34 - 10:36
Again there's there's a positive,
10:36 - 10:39
significant negative relationship between literacy
10:39 - 10:41
rate and the scoring patterns.
10:45 - 10:46
Also,
10:46 - 10:52
the classical regression model is showing like um the R value with more than like
10:53 - 10:55
0.62.
10:55 - 10:59
And it is giving we can predict the average score by
11:00 - 11:04
this model of literacy rate retention score and resource persons.
11:14 - 11:17
Now, coming to the conclusion of my study,
11:17 - 11:21
the result shows that there's a pattern in students score.
11:23 - 11:25
That's the first part of my study,
11:25 - 11:30
like the pattern exists in the school scores and to see
11:30 - 11:34
how it is related with other factors like we related,
11:34 - 11:36
correlated it with literacy rate.
11:36 - 11:40
So the result shows that it's negatively correlated with the literacy rate
11:40 - 11:45
and the retention scores and human development index and covid index,
11:45 - 11:48
and also socioeconomic index of that specific region.
11:50 - 11:53
So, what what was concluded what, what was observed?
11:53 - 11:58
So it seems there is an inflated scoring which exist in the region,
11:58 - 12:01
especially where the literacy rate is low
12:01 - 12:03
or the retention scare is low.
12:03 - 12:09
So it was it was logically expected that with the literacy rate is low,
12:09 - 12:12
the average score should also be low.
12:12 - 12:16
But in this study, the special patterns or the special analytics,
12:16 - 12:19
Gay was like different results.
12:19 - 12:22
So we can name it as an inflated scoring.
12:22 - 12:24
So we don't know the reason.
12:24 - 12:26
So there is a need to further investigate
12:26 - 12:29
the reasons why the inflated scoring exist,
12:29 - 12:33
which can ultimately help us to improve the quality of marking of
12:33 - 12:38
the or improve the quality of scores in the low literacy regions.
12:38 - 12:43
Or maybe there might be some other reasons which needs some further studies.
12:44 - 12:44
Yeah,
12:46 - 12:49
so this was all about my study which is like
12:49 - 12:51
designing and implementing the special
12:51 - 12:53
learning analytics in distance education,
12:53 - 12:58
especially when we have like large number of data and that
12:58 - 13:03
data is like belong to different area or geographical aspects.
13:03 - 13:09
So that makes the G. I. S. Or the special software is more accurate to work.
13:09 - 13:11
And it is where the
13:12 - 13:15
helpful to visualize such kind of data in
13:15 - 13:19
our maps and to relate these analytics with different
13:19 - 13:23
factors to make like more appropriate decisions or to
13:23 - 13:27
make more precise decisions according to the data.
13:27 - 13:31
Thank you very much Once again for giving me the opportunity.
13:31 - 13:34
Um If you have any question you can
13:34 - 13:40
email me because I think uh or if I'm available online, so I can also answer that.
13:40 - 13:42
Thank you very much.
