  1. Hello and welcome back to another lesson in our wellness series
  2. today, we will be focused on post graduation options.
  3. Have you taken the time to think about what
  4. you will do when you graduate from high school?
  5. Hmm
  6. well that's our focus for today.
  7. Before we move on, I'd like us to reflect back to our wellness will,
  8. which is the foundation of our lessons.
  9. Remember that in order for us to be balanced and
  10. happy we need to address all parts of the wellness will
  11. our physical needs need to be met?
  12. Our emotional needs, academic, career needs, social, creative, spiritual,
  13. environmental,
  14. financial and intellectual needs are important and need to
  15. be met so that we can feel happy.
  16. Specifically we're gonna be focusing on the academic and career portion
  17. of the wheel as it relates to our post graduation options.
  18. This is a quote by Chadwick Boseman who was a star in the movie black panther,
  19. whatever you choose for a career path.
  20. Remember the struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose.
  21. There's a lot of choices that you're facing when you
  22. think about what you would do after high school.
  23. Should I go this way? Should I go that way?
  24. Remember that you're not in this by yourself.
  25. Use your resources around you for support, human resources, your parents,
  26. people within the school or even people within
  27. the community that may serve as mentors.
  28. They're all there to help you to be able to make good choices
  29. graduating from high school can be an exciting and scary time.
  30. It is important to have a plan in place and a vision for your future.
  31. Take the time now to think about your options
  32. post graduation and create a roadmap for success.
  33. I want to take this time to say that college is wonderful.
  34. I went to college but please know that there are other options out there.
  35. Besides college, everyone is not meant to go to college and that is okay.
  36. What path will you follow?
  37. Will it be
  38. employment right after school?
  39. The family, business, military, trade, school and internship.
  40. Maybe you'll do a community fellowship program
  41. which is some type of volunteer work or
  42. maybe you will take a year off from school to do some other things.
  43. You know, that is okay. It's just having a plan in place.
  44. If you would take out your journal
  45. and look at the worksheet that I've provided and I want
  46. you to do an online scavenger hunt of these different sites.
  47. One site is a career assessment.
  48. Sometimes you may not really have an idea of what it is that you really want to do uh
  49. do with your life.
  50. So if you take the career assessment,
  51. it can help you to identify some prospective careers that you may be good at.
  52. There's a couple of career sites that I've included.
  53. Take time to look at those career sites and do
  54. research on the career choices that you're interested in.
  55. You'll find that some may require some college and school and while others do not.
  56. But it's important to do that research there. It also will list of the potential
  57. salaries for those careers and then you may say, well I'm not interested in college,
  58. that's okay.
  59. I haven't forgotten.
  60. There's a website called 15 alternatives to college.
  61. Please feel free to go there to research options outside
  62. of college and then if you are interested in college,
  63. the last website that I have listed is a college board website
  64. that you can go to to research different schools that you're interested in.
  65. So before I log off and allow you to do your own interactive activities,
  66. let me take a minute here to go through the different websites very quickly.
  67. So here we have the interest assessment,
  68. It's 30 questions and it's about five minutes.
  69. Okay. Once you do the interest assessment and you decide that um you know,
  70. some of the careers that
  71. that they have suggested that you follow, you're interested in,
  72. then you can move on to a couple of
  73. other sites where you can research your career interests.
  74. Okay, So this is a site that is called my next move and you can take your time with this,
  75. you just go to the search engine here and
  76. you type in what you're interested in and then it
  77. will create a snapshot for you of your career
  78. choice and it also includes a video as well.
  79. This is called my next move
  80. and of course you'll be taking,
  81. you know taking more time to do the research on your own.
  82. Okay. The next website is also
  83. a career website where you can find out about the pay
  84. and what type of education is required for the job.
  85. This is called the occupational outlook handbook.
  86. So this is a good site to go to where you will be
  87. able to get a lot of details about your potential career interests.
  88. Okay. And then let's take a look at
  89. the alternatives.
  90. What if I don't want to go to school and that's okay?
  91. You can go to this website here and it
  92. lists a ton of different alternatives to college,
  93. such as working a job
  94. pursuing a creative talent, going to trade school, starting a business etcetera.
  95. I'm not going to go through all of these.
  96. But if college is not your thing,
  97. I would suggest you come into this website so you can take
  98. your time to look through all of these different potential choices.
  99. It's always good to have options.
  100. Now, the next website that I've listed for you
  101. is that for those
  102. that are interested in college, you can go to the College Board's website
  103. to do research on a school of choice.
  104. So I'm just gonna pull up, I'm from Alabama.
  105. So I'm just gonna pull up a school just to show you an example.
  106. Okay, let's try another school.
  107. So when you go here, you just simply type in the name and from there,
  108. it will give you details about the school from the cost of the school
  109. to you know to campus life to everything that you would like to know.
  110. So
  111. after you've gone through and you've looked at the different
  112. websites this is the activity that that I'd like you to try.
  113. I want you to choose three options that you could potentially be interested in.
  114. For example college going to the workforce
  115. right after you graduate and the military.
  116. Those could be three potential choices.
  117. And for each of those three choices,
  118. list of pros and cons or a pro and a con for each choice,
  119. a pro would be what would be the good
  120. thing that could come from this?
  121. What could be a not so good thing to come from this and that's
  122. just so that you can have things listed out and be able to say,
  123. well if I choose the military, what could be good or bad about this?
  124. If I do go to college, what's the good thing about it?
  125. What could be a potentially not good thing about it?
  126. You want to have three choices there.
  127. When it comes to resources about postgraduate options,
  128. please make sure that you utilize your resources, you can look online for support.
  129. You can check with the state board of Education where you live
  130. to see what the resources that they have there on their website.
  131. You know, their school councils all over,
  132. look in your community, it could be the Y. M. C a. Or a community center.
  133. Sometimes people have teachers, teachers,
  134. activities that include counselors and other support to help you
  135. to be able to get the information that you need.
  136. Okay,
  137. thank you for joining me, and good luck with your scavenger hunt.
