00:01 - 00:03
Good morning fourth graders.
00:04 - 00:06
Today we're going to be talking about the battle of
00:07 - 00:10
fort Sumpter, which is the very first battle in the
00:10 - 00:11
american civil war.
00:12 - 00:14
Now, so far up to date.
00:14 - 00:18
We talked a lot about the compromises and all the
00:18 - 00:21
other facts that led up to the civil war.
00:22 - 00:25
Lot of those things included the division of the country,
00:26 - 00:31
which happened to be because of slavery, the south wanting
00:31 - 00:34
to become their own region and have their own president
00:36 - 00:36
and government.
00:37 - 00:40
And we talked about the addition of the new states
00:41 - 00:42
thanks to those three compromises.
00:44 - 00:47
So today we're going to be talking about the very
00:47 - 00:50
first battle of the civil war, which is the battle
00:50 - 00:51
of Fort Sumpter.
00:52 - 00:57
It is the first definitive battle from the north against
00:57 - 00:57
the south.
00:58 - 01:01
And we're going to be talking about the key players
01:02 - 01:04
in this battle, who were the people that were responsible
01:05 - 01:06
for it.
01:06 - 01:09
And we're going to be talking about some background knowledge
01:09 - 01:12
just a little bit as a refresher strategy is that
01:12 - 01:16
the winning team used to win and the results of
01:16 - 01:17
the battle today.
01:18 - 01:21
So without further ado here we go.
01:24 - 01:27
So as you can see this battle happened in 1861
01:30 - 01:33
1861 was the start of the Battle of Fort Sumpter.
01:34 - 01:38
Now remember the election of the four candidates that we
01:38 - 01:45
talked about earlier, including Abraham Lincoln, Stephen, Douglas, john low
01:45 - 01:52
regard and john bell, We're from 1860, meaning it was
01:53 - 01:54
one year before this battle happened.
01:55 - 02:01
So president Lincoln is officially the president as of right
02:01 - 02:04
now, but we're going to put a pin in that
02:04 - 02:07
for now because he is the president of the Union.
02:09 - 02:14
To remember that this battle of Fort Sumpter happens in
02:14 - 02:16
charleston harbor south Carolina.
02:17 - 02:20
Now, if you look at a map, you can see
02:20 - 02:26
south Carolina is in the confederacy area of the map,
02:27 - 02:27
meaning it's in the south.
02:28 - 02:32
So, to fight this battle, some of the armies of
02:32 - 02:35
the Union go to the south to try to invade
02:36 - 02:40
this port, which is in fort Sumpter, the regions.
02:40 - 02:43
At this point, we're already divided between the Union and
02:43 - 02:43
the confederacy.
02:44 - 02:49
So the two different sides already had different leaders and
02:49 - 02:53
we're prepared to fight for the country and for their
02:53 - 03:01
independence or Union of the States again, Alrighty, now, do
03:01 - 03:03
you remember that pin that I told you to keep
03:03 - 03:05
in? We're going to take that pin out.
03:06 - 03:09
And now you can see Abraham Lincoln is the very
03:09 - 03:12
first leader in the very first key player of the
03:13 - 03:13
battle of fort Sumpter.
03:15 - 03:20
Now, Abraham Lincoln was the Union president, meaning he was
03:20 - 03:23
supposed to be the president of the entire United States,
03:24 - 03:28
but then the south decided to secede or leave the
03:28 - 03:31
Union and that's how they formed their own area, which
03:31 - 03:32
is the confederacy.
03:33 - 03:36
So he's still the president.
03:37 - 03:40
But now those United States is divided between two sections.
03:41 - 03:45
Okay, now if you skip over to, you'll see Jefferson
03:46 - 03:48
Davis as the confederate president.
03:49 - 03:56
Now we talked about the confederacy wanting all new parts
03:57 - 04:00
that a country would get when they're becoming independent, meaning
04:01 - 04:03
they wanted a new president, they want a new government,
04:04 - 04:07
they wanted a new capital and they certainly wanted new
04:07 - 04:10
laws. We talked about in our last lesson that the
04:11 - 04:13
laws were a huge reason as to why the South
04:14 - 04:15
left the Union.
04:16 - 04:18
So now there are two presidents of the United States
04:18 - 04:20
because the states are divided.
04:21 - 04:26
Abraham Lincoln, is that union President and Jefferson Davis is
04:26 - 04:27
the confederacy president.
04:28 - 04:31
No, neither of these men are the ones on the
04:31 - 04:36
battlefield That leads us to the second player on the
04:36 - 04:40
list and the 4th player on the list, we have
04:41 - 04:47
Major robert Anderson, the union military leader, Mr Anderson worked
04:48 - 04:53
under Abraham Lincoln, meaning he led the Union army during
04:53 - 04:57
Fort Sumpter and for the rest of the battles in
04:57 - 04:58
the civil war.
04:59 - 05:02
On the other hand, we have General Pt Beauregard, which
05:02 - 05:07
was a confederate leader, meaning he was in charge of
05:07 - 05:09
the strategies for the south.
05:10 - 05:17
Now, ironically, Mr Anderson was the mentor of PT Beauregard
05:18 - 05:20
and PT Beauregard was his student.
05:21 - 05:26
So it was the mentor and the mentee that we're
05:26 - 05:29
going against each other during the Battle of Fort Sumpter
05:29 - 05:32
and for a majority of the battles in the civil
05:32 - 05:38
war, because this is the first battle of the civil
05:38 - 05:42
war. Both generals wanted to set the tone for what
05:43 - 05:45
the war would hope to look like.
05:46 - 05:52
So because the north invaded the south in south Carolina,
05:53 - 05:57
the south gave them one chance to change their mind.
05:58 - 06:02
On april 12th 18 61 General Beauregard sent a message
06:03 - 06:06
to Major Anderson telling him that the confederate army would
06:06 - 06:09
bombard the Union army if the Union did not surrender.
06:11 - 06:15
The south had the Union cornered at this point, they
06:15 - 06:18
had made sure they were cut off from all of
06:18 - 06:20
their resources and there was no way out.
06:22 - 06:29
Mr Anderson wanted to keep his troops safe so he
06:30 - 06:33
wanted to find a way where he didn't have to
06:33 - 06:36
surrender, but he also Didn't have any of his troops
06:37 - 06:41
hurt. So he was trying to stall and instead of
06:41 - 06:45
doing that surrender on April 12, he decided to go
06:45 - 06:46
against it.
06:46 - 06:50
And because of that, the Union decided to follow through
06:51 - 06:53
with their promise and bombard fort Sumpter.
06:56 - 06:58
Now there were a lot of bombs headed towards them.
06:58 - 07:01
There was a lot of fire and smoke everywhere thanks
07:02 - 07:02
to this battle.
07:03 - 07:09
But luckily nobody got hurt and Major Anderson surrendered to
07:10 - 07:10
the confederacy
