00:02 - 00:05
this presentation has been created
00:05 - 00:06
for
00:07 - 00:09
peers and colleagues to explain the camp
00:09 - 00:12
instructional design model and how it can be
00:12 - 00:17
applied to a lesson that has already been created and used in the classroom.
00:18 - 00:21
The lesson specifically is called device free moments,
00:23 - 00:27
an overview of the lesson, You can see the lesson explanation,
00:28 - 00:31
it states that technology use isn't always a distraction,
00:31 - 00:35
but there are definitely times when it's best to keep devices away.
00:35 - 00:37
This lesson will help students learn when
00:37 - 00:39
it's appropriate to use technology and when
00:39 - 00:43
it's not and practice making family rules for device free time at home.
00:43 - 00:49
It is a lesson taken specifically from common sense education,
00:50 - 00:52
a brief overview of the lesson.
00:52 - 00:52
Again,
00:52 - 00:58
it specifically focuses on times that are appropriate to not use technology.
00:59 - 01:05
There's a short video for students to watch that is great and age appropriate.
01:06 - 01:10
The video shows the students characters who are
01:10 - 01:14
putting their devices away at a time when technology
01:15 - 01:16
would be appropriate
01:17 - 01:18
to be put away.
01:18 - 01:23
There are four important reasons to have device free moments
01:23 - 01:27
and this lesson does explain and discuss them in depth.
01:28 - 01:30
There is group work
01:31 - 01:32
involved
01:32 - 01:38
um that has been added on my end as part of kEMP's instructional design model.
01:39 - 01:42
There is an independent practice work that will be
01:42 - 01:45
sent home at the end of the lesson and
01:45 - 01:47
there's also a handout that will be used for
01:47 - 01:52
reflection and evaluation of the lesson in general.
01:53 - 01:57
You can see the standards that go along with the lesson,
01:58 - 02:03
they've been there with the international society for Technology and education.
02:03 - 02:06
There are seven standards that apply directly to the lesson
02:06 - 02:07
and you can see those
02:08 - 02:09
described here.
02:11 - 02:11
Mhm.
02:14 - 02:17
The objectives objectives for the lesson have been taken directly from
02:17 - 02:21
the lesson itself again which was created by common sense education.
02:21 - 02:25
You can see the three objectives that are being focused upon in this lesson,
02:25 - 02:29
recognizing and restating the ways in which digital devices can be distracting,
02:29 - 02:31
identifying how they feel,
02:31 - 02:34
how students feel when others are distracted by their devices and
02:34 - 02:39
identifying ideal device free moments for students themselves and for others.
02:40 - 02:41
The first objective is one
02:41 - 02:43
that I have
02:43 - 02:45
altered and adjusted
02:45 - 02:48
to incorporate more of KEMP's instructional design model,
02:51 - 02:54
instructional level and learning environment here
02:54 - 02:56
are some materials and equipment that
02:56 - 03:00
would be important to have in order to make this lesson happen.
03:00 - 03:05
A common sense education login is required, this is a
03:06 - 03:11
free site, so it is available to educators that would like to sign up
03:12 - 03:17
the flashcards vocabulary list would be specific
03:17 - 03:18
to
03:18 - 03:21
the learners that are in this classroom.
03:22 - 03:23
It is also an addition
03:24 - 03:27
that of kEMP's instructional design model
03:29 - 03:30
that I added to the lesson.
03:31 - 03:36
Um the handout that is used for reflection and evaluation would also be important
03:36 - 03:37
two
03:38 - 03:41
assess and evaluate how the lesson
03:41 - 03:41
when
03:42 - 03:47
the equipment, you can see, I use this lesson and I
03:48 - 03:53
project it onto my screen so the students can be a part of the lesson as a whole,
03:56 - 04:00
the environment and the level, it's a second grade lesson specifically,
04:00 - 04:05
it can be used for in person, virtual learning or blended learning.
04:06 - 04:09
We as a team, use Microsoft teams.
04:10 - 04:15
So this lesson can be screen shared, which is a nice feature.
04:15 - 04:19
So students that are in the classroom can see it taking place on the board.
04:19 - 04:22
Students who are at home can be a part of the
04:22 - 04:25
lesson as they see it on their screen on their computer.
04:26 - 04:28
The classroom is specifically an inclusion classroom
04:28 - 04:31
with regular and special education students.
04:31 - 04:33
There is paraprofessional support in the
04:33 - 04:35
classroom for the special needs students.
04:35 - 04:40
And the lesson takes place specifically in a computer lab.
04:41 - 04:45
The learners that are for this specific lesson,
04:45 - 04:48
the second grade classroom that I have used this lesson
04:48 - 04:52
for and plan on using this lesson for our again,
04:52 - 04:57
all second grade learners as previously stated, it is an inclusion classroom
04:57 - 05:01
in their instructional levels range anywhere from kindergarten
05:01 - 05:04
to um just about on grade level.
05:04 - 05:11
There's a mix of male and female students in the class from diverse income levels.
05:11 - 05:13
All of the students in this specific
05:13 - 05:17
classroom are white students from rural neighborhoods.
05:18 - 05:22
That's primarily the makeup of the district as a whole.
05:23 - 05:24
So
05:24 - 05:26
the classroom does
05:28 - 05:31
um, does mimic that and show that as well.
05:32 - 05:32
Mm hmm.
05:34 - 05:38
How the camp instructional design model would go along with this lesson.
05:38 - 05:41
The camp instructional design model focuses a lot
05:41 - 05:45
on learners needs and abilities and being aware of
05:46 - 05:48
the learner specific needs.
05:48 - 05:53
The instructional design model has nine key elements
05:54 - 05:57
and because it is a circular design model,
05:57 - 06:02
it gives more flexibility than other instructional
06:02 - 06:05
design models that are out there.
06:05 - 06:09
So one important thing to know is that it does
06:09 - 06:13
not need to be followed in a specific way.
06:13 - 06:17
All of the pieces do not have to happen in each and every lesson.
06:17 - 06:18
So again,
06:18 - 06:21
the lesson flexibility is a great asset and
06:21 - 06:24
a great characteristic of KEMP's instructional design model.
06:25 - 06:27
The changes that I made to the specific lesson I
06:27 - 06:30
briefly mentioned as we were going through the lesson overview,
06:30 - 06:33
I did adjust some of the wording and the objectives.
06:33 - 06:36
I made the first objective, I added
06:37 - 06:42
um I added a word to make it more observable and measurable.
06:42 - 06:45
I added um ways to address the learner
06:45 - 06:49
specific needs in that specific second grade classroom.
06:49 - 06:53
Since I know the learners since I have been with him before,
06:53 - 06:55
since we've already conducted a learner assessment,
06:55 - 06:57
we know it's an inclusion classroom.
06:57 - 06:59
So I have added
07:00 - 07:05
the use of either a vocabulary list or flash cards for those students who need that
07:05 - 07:09
extra support because there are quite a few
07:09 - 07:11
vocabulary words or keywords in this lesson.
07:12 - 07:15
The fact that there are kinesthetic learners for the most part
07:15 - 07:18
in this classroom due to it being a special needs class,
07:18 - 07:20
the students like to get up and move around,
07:20 - 07:22
They have a hard time sitting for long periods of time.
07:22 - 07:27
So there's movement added into the lesson where there previously hadn't been,
07:28 - 07:32
I also added a guided practice activity which included real
07:32 - 07:36
life examples um of acting it out as a group.
07:36 - 07:39
So during the lesson there will be a time
07:39 - 07:43
where the students are put into groups and they can
07:44 - 07:46
perform and role play
07:46 - 07:53
real life examples of how they feel, how others feel when they're distracted
07:54 - 07:55
by technology.
07:55 - 08:00
So it just adds more um real life examples for the students and allows
08:00 - 08:03
them to connect to the lesson a little more than they had previously.
08:03 - 08:05
Without that example in there,
08:06 - 08:09
the last part of the references that I used and you can see
08:09 - 08:14
those um common sense education and common sense media is where this lesson
08:14 - 08:16
completely came from. Um,
08:17 - 08:20
the entire lesson is available on common sense
08:20 - 08:21
dot org.
08:22 - 08:23
The standards that I used were the
08:23 - 08:26
International Society for a Technology and Education and
08:27 - 08:32
Penn State's website does a great job of explaining the kEMP model of design.
08:33 - 08:37
Oh
