  1. Hello, my name is Hannah Kelly and I am the founder of Mobile Meal,
  2. which is a nonprofit volunteer based organization
  3. in the city of Buffalo
  4. Mo Mobile Meals and New York Health Foundation
  5. have multiple ideologies that coincide with each other.
  6. One of which includes healthy foods, healthy lives.
  7. This coincides with mobile meals.
  8. For our goal is to provide healthy prepared meals to the city of Buffalo,
  9. specifically on the East side,
  10. to those who are facing food insecurities and promote health, healthy, I'm sorry,
  11. healthy options.
  12. Um Another goal of New York Health Foundation is to
  13. promote health care at a regional and statewide level,
  14. which is another priority of mobile meals or we
  15. will be collaborating with two other groups as well.
  16. One of which is a local group, Black Love, resistant Love,
  17. which is an abolition group focused on promoting
  18. um alternative to policing in the city of Buffalo as well as other
  19. systems.
  20. And they are also focused on repairing harms
  21. that the government has inflicted including red lining,
  22. which is a reason why Buffalo in particular is still a very segregated city.
  23. Um Another organization includes Black Farmers Unite,
  24. which is uh founded in New York City and this organization focuses on
  25. healthy food options as well as employment
  26. and also giving back to the land and having sustainable
  27. um farming practices as well. Um Black farmers are known to
  28. specifically to grow a better,
  29. a higher percentage of healthier food at a lower and a more affordable
  30. cost for people as well as um promoting self resilience as well.
  31. Therefore, this is a focus of support for mobile meal
  32. for recruitment of volunteers as well as
  33. volunteering for their organizations as well.
  34. Um As I have stated previously,
  35. um red lining is a technique that was used in the city of Buffalo, which
  36. makes it still very Segre
  37. gated today. As you can see uh on the figure on your left,
  38. it is a map of Buffalo and it is from 1937 from a home owner's loan corporation
  39. and they are practicing red lining techniques to exclude
  40. the African American population from receiving home owners mortgages.
  41. Um implications like this have
  42. obvious harms um
  43. in the community and can still be seen as recently as 2015.
  44. On the right,
  45. you can see a map of Buffalo and you can see that it
  46. um in the population areas where it is more than 50% African American
  47. bank trade area has excluded these areas from receiving
  48. home ownership loans that's making it more difficult for these
  49. um populations to seek better opportunities.
  50. Um As you can see in this map it is a
  51. it
  52. is
  53. um a map of the city of Buffalo.
  54. And as you can see, due to the implications of red lining,
  55. you can still see
  56. um a very segregated city today.
  57. This is from 2010,
  58. but this is also data that we can see today
  59. as well where the majority of the black population resides.
  60. On the east side,
  61. on the east side of Buffalo,
  62. there are 54 blocks,
  63. 51 of them in which are considered to not
  64. be an adequate walking distance to a supermarket.
  65. Therefore, there are 51 blocks
  66. in
  67. the city of Buffalo,
  68. which are only on the east side,
  69. which are the majority is uh the black black population who are facing food
  70. insecurities due to not having adequate food
  71. um walking distance to the supermarkets.
  72. Therefore, mobile meals will be having a food truck to be able to
  73. um
  74. travel to these 54 blocks and provide prepared
  75. meals for these individuals facing food insecurities.
  76. The budget for this program includes $86,100 and the statisticss and
  77. information regarding the needs and the funds for this program have been
  78. um
  79. carefully sourced from multiple sources including um
  80. the Buffalo Food Truck uh association,
  81. um insurance, uh food and packaging,
  82. the delivery fee in order to get these
  83. foods and start up material which includes utensils
  84. and other
  85. um packaging needs a
  86. lot of the produce that mobile meals will be providing
  87. will also be through collaboration from Black Farmers unite.
  88. Therefore,
  89. we will be promoting and supporting another organization while
  90. simultaneously providing healthier food options to the Buffalo public.
  91. Therefore, this organization
  92. is needed for this or for this area for
  93. we need to provide prepared meals for the community. For there are
  94. about 46,000 people
  95. um in the city of Buffalo who are on the East Side, who are single parents.
  96. Therefore, the majority of parents,
  97. uh 52% are from single family homes.
  98. And therefore due to time constraints, do not have
  99. um
  100. the time
  101. or maybe they have limited resources to cooking materials.
  102. Therefore, this organization is very
  103. adamant about providing prepared meals and being able to
  104. travel to this area to provide meals and healthy options
  105. to
  106. the community of Buffalo. Specifically on the East side.
