  1. Hi there.
  2. My name is Elena.
  3. I'm a masters of nursing student with Athabasca University.
  4. In this presentation, we will be dissecting how nursing theory
  5. applies to practice.
  6. In the creation of knowledge.
  7. We will examine two different theorists, one classical theorists, Dorothy
  8. Arm and one more contemporary theorists, Barbara Dawsy.
  9. Let's begin with the classical theorists.
  10. Dorothy Arm.
  11. She created the self care deficit theory, which analyzes a
  12. person's ability to care for themselves by addressing deficits that
  13. exist in self care Requisites.
  14. We are able to identify spots for a nursing action,
  15. also known as nursing agency, can apply to care and
  16. provide through the nursing system.
  17. It is a rather straightforward theory that simply recognizes deficits
  18. and addresses them with nursing action.
  19. Okay, next, let's examine dossiers Theory of integral nursing.
  20. As the title suggests, it's really just an integrated amalgamation
  21. of the meta paradigm of nursing patterns of knowing concepts
  22. of reality and the nurse client relationship.
  23. It's a rather comprehensive and hard to conceptualize model, so
  24. I will ask you to refer to the following diagram
  25. to help create a visual.
  26. The takeaway and application of dossiers Theory of integral nursing
  27. is to create an accurate sense of reality for yourself
  28. as a nurse, but to understand how the patient, your
  29. relationship with the patient, and concepts that need to be
  30. addressed to promote wellness and health exist.
  31. Dossiers theory, in my opinion, is much more grand and
  32. presents a worldview or globalization of nursing issues as an
  33. expression of health as an expanding consciousness.
  34. Let's quickly consider the following scenario.
  35. You have a 28 year old female who has just
  36. been flown in from an outlying community to your emergency
  37. department. She presents and is diagnosed to being a diabetic.
  38. Ketoacidosis on review of the patient's chart.
  39. You noticed that they have been admitted to the hospital
  40. only two months prior with the same diagnosis.
  41. Although the DK was exacerbated at that time due to
  42. a pile and arthritis, the patient presents with generalized abdomen,
  43. abdomen pain, nausea, vomiting and a random blood glucose of
  44. 28.9. There are no signs of a recurring infection.
  45. Let's start with arm.
  46. On a first glance, I can recognize that the universal
  47. self care requisites of adequate intake and nutrients would be
  48. disrupted due to the nausea, vomiting and diarrhea sis that
  49. occurs in a D K state.
  50. Furthermore, I can recognize that the patient clearly has an
  51. inability to self care and manage blood glucose on a
  52. regular basis in order to prevent decay.
  53. This isn't a fault of the patient, but rather an
  54. indication that we need to address the gaps that result
  55. in this recurrent admission.
  56. I will prioritize these two concepts as in an emergency
  57. setting. This is really as far as my care can
  58. go prior to an admission.
  59. This involves me giving an anti Semitic to prevent nausea
  60. and vomiting i v fluids for rapid resuscitation and an
  61. engagement and therapeutic communication with the patient in an attempt
  62. to identify the cause of recurrent decay and address any
  63. social concerns.
  64. Mhm, as you can see, it is a rather simple,
  65. generalized and universal application of orm.
  66. Within the nursing practice, it can be applied to all
  67. nursing instances, even at a first glance.
  68. Next, let's consider Dossey.
  69. Dossey is theory of integral nursing would involve engagement in
  70. a deep therapeutic communication in order to address the patient's
  71. internal needs, external needs and then those of ours combined.
  72. I have arranged this simply within this four square chart
  73. for your review in an emergency setting, this holistic, comprehensive
  74. approach seems time consuming and challenging in the fast paced
  75. setting. It's not to say that I don't want to
  76. address these concerns for the patient at the root of
  77. the cause, but it is difficult when the patient is
  78. acutely ill to fully assess their emotions.
  79. Fears concerns ideations the knowledge of their illness all within
  80. a first glance.
  81. Although the two theories are influential in practice development, as
  82. both theories great a holistic approach to care, the self
  83. care deficit theory is much more easily applicable, concise in
  84. its application and relevant within the emergency setting dossiers.
  85. Theory of Integral nursing is inspiring, thought provoking and promotes
  86. a globalization and increased awareness with regards to nursing care
  87. and health for all of society.
  88. I just don't see it as an easy to use
  89. universal theory in the emergency setting.
  90. I would strongly suggest the use of dossiers theory of
  91. integral nursing in a controlled inpatient setting, where the patient
  92. is stable and can adequately explored, discussed, conceptualize their true
  93. thoughts, emotions, feelings and recognize where there is room for
  94. growth both on an individual level and with within aspects
  95. of care.
  96. Hopefully, this brief presentation facilitates a helpful review of the
  97. application of these two theories of nursing within nursing practice.
