00:01 - 00:04
Hello. My name is Leslie Wilcox.
00:04 - 00:09
Today I'm going to talk about social justice and educational technology.
00:09 - 00:12
Amazingly I just finished a class for my
00:12 - 00:18
staff development on cultural identity and institutional bias
00:18 - 00:23
And today I'm here talking about social justice and education.
00:23 - 00:24
Let me go ahead.
00:26 - 00:26
Yeah.
00:29 - 00:31
So the first thing I want to
00:32 - 00:35
focus on is that understanding social justice
00:35 - 00:39
means understanding completely different levels of knowledge
00:39 - 00:43
because social justice isn't just one thing and we
00:43 - 00:45
can't focus on that one thing all the time.
00:45 - 00:51
Social justice means so many different things to so many different people.
00:51 - 00:53
And I put a bunch of words on here.
00:53 - 00:59
Could mean culture could mean contextual concepts social constructs.
00:59 - 01:04
It could mean engaging in praxis like what are reading entailed,
01:04 - 01:08
could talk about social variables, decision making skills.
01:08 - 01:13
It could entail what are stakeholders want compared to what the community wants.
01:13 - 01:18
It can mean demographics and socio economic issues.
01:18 - 01:21
It can mean that expectations are not being met.
01:21 - 01:26
It can mean that audience participation does not agree or audience
01:26 - 01:29
does not agree with what is being said or done.
01:29 - 01:35
And it can also talk about emotional intelligence, networking opportunities,
01:35 - 01:40
collaboration, connections and the concept of good intent,
01:40 - 01:44
meaning that not everybody out there wants the same thing
01:44 - 01:46
you do in the same feelings that you do.
01:47 - 01:52
However, when we're talking about social justice in a collaborative effort,
01:52 - 01:55
we're also trying to make sure that we're all on the
01:55 - 01:58
same wavelength and the same good intent.
01:58 - 01:59
Yeah,
02:00 - 02:03
but if we're talking about black and white issues or cultural
02:03 - 02:08
issues or identities or ethnicity or social constructs such as racism,
02:08 - 02:11
sometimes we do not have good intent,
02:11 - 02:19
but something that school and classes and online classes and communities and
02:19 - 02:24
organizations can do is gather people in groups in an educational setting,
02:24 - 02:26
professional setting, um,
02:26 - 02:30
and learn about the different steps we
02:30 - 02:33
can take towards conflict management towards decision
02:33 - 02:38
making as a group because as a group it can be more effective.
02:38 - 02:41
We can have more knowledge, there's more diverse views.
02:41 - 02:43
Um, we learn from other people.
02:43 - 02:48
Um, there's higher quality decisions that are, that are being made,
02:48 - 02:53
it's collaborative and there's increased acceptance into what we're trying to do.
02:53 - 02:57
So it's really important to actually acknowledge that
02:57 - 03:02
Social Justice and just the name itself is not just one
03:02 - 03:07
thing and cannot be talked about within a 3-5 minute presentation,
03:07 - 03:08
but I'm going to try anyhow.
03:15 - 03:19
So the next thing I kind of want to talk about is, you know,
03:19 - 03:22
what about technology and education?
03:22 - 03:22
Well,
03:22 - 03:25
the fact is is that education uses technology
03:25 - 03:28
all the time to assist with social justice issues
03:29 - 03:32
and there's many different social issues that I just talked about.
03:32 - 03:33
So, um,
03:33 - 03:37
some of the ways that we can do that are through something like this through online
03:37 - 03:41
distance learning classes or through zoom through professional
03:41 - 03:45
management classes or staff development training classes.
03:45 - 03:49
Um, Metro meter is another tool that you can use
03:49 - 03:52
and that I have used often whiteboard jam board,
03:52 - 03:54
all of these things.
03:54 - 04:00
Help and our tools and technology towards helping with social justice issues.
04:00 - 04:03
The social justice issue that I'm currently working on is
04:03 - 04:08
self awareness of how to deal with the homeless.
04:08 - 04:12
What does, what impact will self awareness have
04:12 - 04:14
on the homeless,
04:14 - 04:17
especially for staff who work in a local homeless shelter.
04:17 - 04:22
And here is a little um knowledge right here
04:23 - 04:26
about how you can create course content
04:26 - 04:29
with discussions and collaboration reflection and our
04:29 - 04:34
actions um that include individual concepts and
04:34 - 04:38
individual knowledge and social justice learning.
04:38 - 04:40
So if we can create the knowledge and the awareness
04:40 - 04:46
and the skills associated with whatever that social justice is,
04:46 - 04:49
then there can be effective learning um,
04:49 - 04:52
and efficient learning when it comes to context.
04:58 - 05:03
So let's talk about who is impacted by technology and social justice
05:03 - 05:06
and the fact is is that it is all of us.
05:06 - 05:11
The real question is how who and what does it impact.
05:11 - 05:15
So if we're talking about the staff development training,
05:15 - 05:18
we're talking about the staff of
05:18 - 05:20
who, whatever the training is.
05:20 - 05:26
If we're talking about students learning about
05:26 - 05:29
the history of black history for example,
05:29 - 05:35
or american indigenous history, then these students are impacted.
05:35 - 05:39
But so are so many others because people will talk about it
05:39 - 05:41
network about it
05:41 - 05:46
and hopefully create more knowledge by doing that.
05:46 - 05:52
Um, as always difficult roads lead to beautiful destinations.
05:52 - 05:56
We can sit in discomfort but we can learn from it.
05:56 - 06:00
So social justice is something that should be learned um,
06:01 - 06:04
with caution depending on what it is,
06:04 - 06:08
because our belief systems can lead us astray sometimes.
06:08 - 06:14
Um, and to acknowledge that our troops are not necessarily somebody else truths.
06:14 - 06:18
And if we can do that, then then I think we've made impact.
06:22 - 06:26
Lastly, I want to thank you for allowing me to talk about this,
06:26 - 06:28
and I hope you have a good night.
06:30 - 06:30
Yes.
