  1. Hi everyone um
  2. I will be doing my presentation on goal
  3. setting skills and basically we're going to go over
  4. on how to construct a goal.
  5. So the first step is to
  6. basically conduct an interview slash assessment with the client?
  7. So it's
  8. the client and the helper.
  9. And the helper is going through some questions and just
  10. assessing the situation and what the client came in for.
  11. So
  12. as we're assessing this information,
  13. we have a variety of sources that were collecting and we
  14. know that there might be some outside forces that influence them
  15. to have these type of problems or the way they act.
  16. So for example, home, their home life, the environment, they grew up in
  17. their family, different relationships that might have affected them and
  18. Yeah etcetera. So why is it important to have these assessments?
  19. Basically these assessments help you determine whether
  20. the client is a good candidate for
  21. um the help that the help the help that the helper can provide.
  22. So for example if
  23. we go through this assessment and the helper sees that they
  24. cannot provide the type of help that the client needs.
  25. Then
  26. another route
  27. might have to be taken or another helper might have to step in.
  28. Um So what are we looking for in this interview process?
  29. We're looking for any any family history, development issues, um
  30. Any sort of background when it comes to cultural,
  31. cultural, religion,
  32. spirituality,
  33. any mental illness background. So we're really trying to dig
  34. deep
  35. in the client's background.
  36. So the interview questions that
  37. we're going through in the assessment.
  38. Um We have the assessment questions which are the early on
  39. questions in
  40. the assessment. So basically it's questions like how can I help you? Um
  41. You know, where would you like to begin? What brings you in here, stuff like that.
  42. Just to get a feeling of what the problem may be.
  43. And then we get into the challenging questions where
  44. the purpose of them is to dig deeper into the client's thinking.
  45. So I have a few examples here. Like what
  46. effect do you think your depression has on your family?
  47. What would your life be if the problem was solved etcetera?
  48. Uh huh.
  49. Mm hmm.
  50. So the next step is identifying the issues.
  51. So the helper is basically organizing all
  52. the information that we got from the assessment
  53. and
  54. the helper and the client help each other pretty much identify these issues.
  55. So the client might say
  56. these are my top ones
  57. and these are the issues that like I need to focus on right now and then
  58. maybe a diagnosis is made. And
  59. we tried to create this list. And as I said, we write the top problems at the top.
  60. And that's going to be our main focus.
  61. Mm hmm.
  62. Bear with me Because I
  63. I've never used this website. But so our next step is to set up a goal. So
  64. goal setting separates the problem into manageable units.
  65. So it kind of gives decline this source of hope and motivation.
  66. Uh that something can be done.
  67. And basically in our sessions we want to focus on achieving this goal
  68. every session
  69. pretty much.
  70. So let's not forget that goals have to be clear and specific for a better progress.
  71. We can't have vague goals where the client doesn't know where to focus on,
  72. they have to be positively stated uh and that will turn into motivation.
  73. It can't be a
  74. aggressive requests where like you have to do this now
  75. or your life return will turn out like this,
  76. it's more of like a positive, you know this goal will help you achieve this and that
  77. so
  78. they have to be meaningful to the clients.
  79. So they have to be personal goals and they have to be realistic.
  80. Um they have to be goals that
  81. are doable are achievable and
  82. they might take time but the client is able to achieve.
  83. So step one is as we said summarizing and talking about these issues
  84. and the client is asked to identify the most crucial important problems.
  85. Once we have that
  86. Then we can go um as I said, Step three is celeste selecting the focal problems.
  87. So we can't do
  88. you know five or seven issues at a time, we have to focus on one or two issues um and then
  89. once we have that we're trying to change this problem into a goal.
  90. So
  91. were say that
  92. the client is having an issue with you know being
  93. shy instead of saying you know um I am shy,
  94. it's more of your changing that into a goal.
  95. So
  96. I am
  97. trying to talk to more people. I am
  98. putting myself out there to um gain more experiences.
  99. So we're turning everything more positive more into a goal.
  100. Now the last step is to make sure that the client and
  101. helper are clear and in agreement of this plan that we have,
  102. you know both parties have to be um understanding of what each other expects.
  103. And so
  104. ah.
