  1. all right.
  2. This week we were talking about something called Rhetoric.
  3. If you're watching this on Tuesday and we already had
  4. sink class this week, then this will serve as a
  5. refresher before we get to the assignment details.
  6. But if you're watching this on Monday and you haven't
  7. been to sink class yet, pay close attention and will
  8. continue to work on it as the day has come.
  9. So rhetoric is a term used to describe the art
  10. of persuasion.
  11. Now you know that to persuade means to cause someone
  12. to do or think something through reasoning or argument.
  13. Rhetoric is organized into multiple pillars, but all of these
  14. pillars are kind of branched off from three main pillars.
  15. Three main types of rhetoric.
  16. Thes air called ethos, pathos and logos.
  17. Now remember, the purpose of persuasion is to get someone
  18. to do or think something through reasoning.
  19. So these air different ways that you can convince someone
  20. to do so.
  21. The first one ethos refers to the Greek term for
  22. a person or their personality or their character ethos in
  23. persuasion means to use one's character personality, trust levels, awareness
  24. as a form of persuasion.
  25. For example, you wouldn't take medical advice from a random
  26. person on the street because you do not trust them.
  27. They don't have that credibility.
  28. So if one is trying to give medical advice, they
  29. should probably get a doctor to do so and utilize
  30. ethos. Now, if those doesn't always have to be credibility
  31. of the field, it could just be someone who is
  32. trusted by the general public.
  33. For example, so many brands and organizations use celebrities to
  34. get their message across and commercials and ads because of
  35. their faces already familiar to you.
  36. You more or less trust them.
  37. Thio give you information for whatever reason, so it is
  38. a kn adequate way.
  39. Thio persuade you the second type or the second pillar
  40. of rhetoric is called pathos.
  41. Now, if you recall the image that was on the
  42. first slide, there was a heart they're paid.
  43. Those refers Thio touching into your emotions and your values,
  44. those commercials that make you cry about all the dogs
  45. that are in shelters with that sad music that's paid
  46. those so pay, Those essentially just appeals to you for
  47. your heart now, Like I said, this also encapsulates this
  48. idea of values so you could use pay phones to
  49. persuade someone by showing them that you share the same
  50. values or morals as them.
  51. And the third and final pillar of rhetoric is called
  52. logos. This simply means using logic, appealing to what makes
  53. logical sense, using reliable data numbers and evidence to show
  54. your audience that there is a logical path to conclusion
  55. that is, logos in persuasion.
  56. Now again, I know if you're watching this on Monday,
  57. it feels a little bit like you're just jumping into
  58. it. But I'm gonna have you practice with your assignment
  59. for today On the lesson page on campus, there is
  60. a slide show at the bottom that has seven different
  61. ads in them that has seven different ads in it.
  62. I want you to identify whether these ads are using
  63. ethos, pathos or logos and simply explain to me how
  64. you got there.
  65. What evidence did you see on that ad that convinced
  66. you that it was or logos?
  67. That's really, quite simply it.
  68. You can rewatch the beginning of the video if you
  69. need a reminder on which is which of those three.
  70. Because I know they're unfamiliar words.
  71. But if you can manage to remember which one's which.
  72. I'm sure you will do fine on the lesson today.
  73. You are always welcome to message me.
  74. If you do need help though, alright, Enjoy the rest
  75. of your day.
  76. Go analyze some
