  1. well,
  2. I hope that you find your time at
  3. the tutoring center a great opportunity and enjoyable.
  4. There is always the potential that you might face some difficult situations and
  5. so I do have some strategies for what to do at these times.
  6. Um,
  7. whether you have a student who seems to be getting really frustrated or
  8. seems to want to buy into that gossip I talked about earlier,
  9. just make sure to bring the focus back to a specific problem.
  10. Even if they don't have one that they're working on and
  11. you feel like things have kind of gotten off the rails,
  12. just say,
  13. you know what
  14. earlier we talked about such and such.
  15. Why don't we
  16. try to work out a problem like that or um,
  17. do you have
  18. a specific question on that concept that I didn't answer earlier?
  19. So bringing the focus back by doing that, you do tend to ask some new questions
  20. and then
  21. this again, could be a time where you
  22. have the student do some of their own work.
  23. You can say something like, you know,
  24. I really appreciate hearing some more from you about the overall class and I think
  25. you know based on everything you told me it might be helpful if I can
  26. See how you solve a certain problem or how you answer the specific question.
  27. So I'm going to give you a few minutes, have you do some this work on question five
  28. and then
  29. when you're finished
  30. or if you get to a point while working on it that you
  31. want to stop and ask me. Um, just let me know and we'll go from there.
  32. If there are any
  33. major questions or concerns that you have though, Report those to me immediately.
  34. Huh?
  35. My office
  36. is
  37. um a cubicle type office at this point.
  38. And so
  39. if the student is still there
  40. in the tutoring center, it would
  41. not be really easy to discreetly discuss things.
  42. And and even if they're not, you want to make sure that you
  43. really consider
  44. noise level, how loud you're talking to me about something.
  45. But we do have some other offices that are
  46. a little more private that we could use if you
  47. have
  48. a concern and you can always send me an email as well detailing
  49. everything.
  50. You could report questions or concerns your learning resources coordinator.
  51. So currently that is chandra based,
  52. If he is my supervisor,
  53. so if I'm out of the office, this would be a great resource to use um
  54. other immediate people who work in our area are Rachel,
  55. Garrett and steven phillips.
  56. But if the issue is, you know, for whatever reason with me
  57. and you don't feel comfortable talking to me about the issue,
  58. then it might be best to discuss with my supervisor.
  59. And then if the issue is on the severity of it's not, you know, an issue of
  60. a students just not listening or they seem to just
  61. want to complain or they're getting frustrated all the time.
  62. But if it's more of an issue of um
  63. they've told you something incredibly serious that is far out
  64. of your your scope and you think it might fall
  65. under title nine which you can look up some title
  66. nine resources to to see if you think it does.
  67. Uh Then please do search S. I. U. S. Website.
  68. Um We do have title nine officers on campus and that might be the best option for you
  69. or
  70. the student.
  71. Now one thing whether things are going really well with the student or you
  72. are facing a difficult situation or you just have a student who started to uh
  73. trust you and has been asking you some more questions for help
  74. that's outside of the scope of tutoring.
  75. We do have some other great resources that you can
  76. absolutely discuss with students or potentially recommend to them.
  77. We have the writing center if you are working with a
  78. student in say sociology and you've been helping them a lot
  79. with the concepts and even discussing a sociology paper assignment with
  80. them kind of helping them figure out what's going on there.
  81. But
  82. now they're asking for help with
  83. grammar issues in the paper.
  84. This would be a great time to recommend them to the writing center.
  85. There are often times when we
  86. have a student that we work with on some
  87. concepts in the class in the tutoring center and then
  88. on some concepts in the writing center and if you're
  89. ever really not sure which resource the student needs.
  90. Um You can ask me or you can ask steven phillips who runs the writing center,
  91. We also have supplemental instruction.
  92. Again, if you're not sure about this,
  93. talk to me or talk to Rachel Garrett who runs supplemental instruction,
  94. but this resource is one where um some of our
  95. traditionally very difficult classes that we have at S. I. U. We
  96. have supplemental instruction
  97. and so
  98. there is
  99. a student who has done very well in that class
  100. who
  101. is now taking the class as an S. I. Leader.
  102. So that means that let's say it's
  103. and I'm just making a class up here,
  104. but let's say we had Kim 325 and it was a really difficult class
  105. and Rachel find someone who
  106. passed that class with an A.
  107. And they want to be an S. I. Later,
  108. they will go to that semesters
  109. Kim 3 25
  110. class sessions. So they're going to see everything that the students see.
  111. You know, all the lectures,
  112. they'll have all the class notes that the instructor provides.
  113. Uh and then they will have you know group study sessions,
  114. they'll be able to work with students in kind of a different way because they are
  115. taking the class again with them,
  116. you might want to bring up faculty office hours sometimes, especially for
  117. brand new students.
  118. They don't really
  119. use the office hours, you don't really know what that means or how to go about that.
  120. So you might talk to them about that as an option
  121. and then we do have success coaches, um advisors, other faculty and staff,
  122. there might be someone who
  123. we can connect the student with help them
  124. with some of those bigger questions or concerns.
  125. We do have some supplies, some of them like the large white boards.
  126. We tend to keep out in our tutoring center all the time,
  127. but we also have some that are stored away in a cabinet.
  128. If you are looking at the tutoring resource in a room when you
  129. walk in and you look all the way at the back wall,
  130. you will see our file cabinets.
  131. You might not be able to see them from some of the dividers.
  132. Um but if you just keep walking back, you'll find them
  133. and
  134. I will show you on one of your first shifts how to access our supply cabinet.
  135. It has typically a variety of things, uh more dry erase markers, erasers.
  136. Uh sometimes the board cleaner, it has some current and previously used textbooks.
  137. If you want to find some sample questions, things like that.
  138. If there's ever either anything that you think, wow, you know,
  139. I'm really surprised that tutoring Resource center doesn't have this I
  140. think would be helpful or there's something that you know,
  141. we do have and it looks like we're running low on um Ask me,
  142. you can just send me an email and I will either um if I have that supply somewhere else,
  143. I'll let you know otherwise um the next time we do put in
  144. an order I'll make sure to add that to the list if possible.
  145. So for my W. C.
  146. I'm not going to say a lot about it now because
  147. there is going to be that separate training video but please know
  148. that you should have this open for the duration of a shift
  149. no matter um if you're working on campus or online only.
  150. Again this is where you clock in and out
  151. and the students will use this to make appointments.
  152. So make sure before the end of your first
  153. shift that you have viewed the my wc online video
  154. and then finally have a little bit of a checklist for you.
  155. So when you're starting at the tutoring center you
  156. have to have completed all your required H.
  157. R. P.
  158. Pay work
  159. and paperwork. I cannot
  160. until you've submitted everything like your I nine's your tax forms,
  161. all of that paperwork that I give to you.
  162. I can't
  163. do the payroll form that I need to do that says yes this person can start working at the
  164. resource center. So you could have looked at all the training material.
  165. You could have um
  166. met with me and give me your schedule and all sorts of other things. But
  167. uh
  168. I cannot
  169. have you start working at the center until
  170. all of that is complete and submitted to me.
  171. Make sure to create um Iwc online account using your
  172. email
  173. and report your ideal schedule methods of tutoring of course as you can
  174. tutor to me at least one week prior to your first shift.
  175. Once you start working at the tutoring center,
  176. there are a few things that I want you
  177. to remember um Clocking in an outreach shift is important
  178. if you have an online appointment
  179. and you don't have another appointment right before it,
  180. go ahead and try to check in to that appointment a couple minutes early.
  181. Sometimes I think if a student is just kind of
  182. sitting out there
  183. um
  184. waiting for you to
  185. uh
  186. sign in, they get a little bit nervous
  187. and so they might close out the appointment or start you know sending emails.
  188. So if you do have the option to sign in early, that's great
  189. balance face to face and blended sessions by being mindful. So what I remain what?
  190. Excuse me what I mean about that is um
  191. if you are working one of those um
  192. blended sessions where
  193. you have
  194. a face to face student in the center and even an online appointment that's starting,
  195. make sure you let the person that you were working with
  196. face to face know that you have an online appointment.
  197. Um but that you'll still be there and you could potentially answer questions um
  198. at a later time
  199. and be aware of your surroundings.
  200. We do typically have a greater at our front desk,
  201. there may be times when we don't uh And if you see someone kind of
  202. standing at the front desk or they look like
  203. they don't really know where to go, like they're looking for someone.
  204. Um Please, you know take a second, get up, see if you can
  205. show them where they need to go.
  206. Also really consider that there are a lot of other people in the area.
  207. So again consider things like your
  208. volume level, um appropriateness, things like that.
  209. Try to have fun though.
  210. I mean with training you're going to learn a lot of basic rules.
  211. Uh So it seems like a lot and um
  212. again it is important that we try to provide the best service
  213. possible for students that we try to provide a professional service.
  214. But
  215. you should still have fun. If you are not enjoying the job, then
  216. it tends to show in your tutoring sessions
  217. and that can really affect the students as well
  218. and make sure any necessary changes that you have report to me as soon as possible.
  219. Now, one thing that's not on this list, but I wanted to add
  220. is
  221. any day that we are closed. That campus is closed.
  222. You do not work even if you had online only appointments,
  223. you will not work them.
  224. So if we have an inclement weather closure, all appointments are
  225. canceled.
  226. Um
  227. Do not show up to work. Don't hold the online appointments.
  228. If any, there's any holidays where we don't have classes. Um Labor Day
  229. Memorial Day, four July all that stuff.
  230. Um we don't have tutoring available so keep that in mind.
  231. Especially if you're working with a student
  232. um through the semester and we have an upcoming break coming up.
  233. Please do let them know that there won't be any tutoring.
  234. We do potentially have tutoring for final exams and
  235. I'll talk to you about that in a second.
  236. So leaving the tutoring center um you don't really have to worry about this
  237. if you plan on coming back the next semester because I will contact you.
  238. Usually the first email I sent is just saying,
  239. hey do you think you might be back next semester?
  240. Yes or no?
  241. Um
  242. Then later on I'll say, hey um do you have an idea of what classes your schedule?
  243. All that fun stuff.
  244. If though you have to endure tutoring prior to final exam week,
  245. please let me know as soon as possible.
  246. You have the option of working during finals week
  247. and I will ask you guys at some point your final exam schedule.
  248. Um We typically tutor monday through Wednesday of finals week and
  249. you can do a different schedule than you're used to.
  250. Um So even if you say you can't schedule can't tutor finals
  251. week that doesn't mean that you have quit the tutoring center?
  252. Okay this means like if you know three or
  253. four weeks prior to finals or something like that.
  254. You can no longer tutor. I need to know as soon as possible.
  255. Do not delete your IWC account, which we'll talk about in a little bit.
  256. Um, and if you are leaving early,
  257. please notify students and we'll talk about that later in the
  258. WC video as well.
