00:01 - 00:02
Hello everyone.
00:02 - 00:05
My name is Matthew Dragon and welcome to my ted talk today,
00:05 - 00:07
we're gonna be talking about what community is,
00:07 - 00:11
how you can join one some of my communities and why they
00:11 - 00:14
are so important when it comes to day to day life.
00:14 - 00:17
The first thing we're going to talk about is what community is.
00:17 - 00:19
There are two different types of communities.
00:19 - 00:22
The first one is where you get to pick by this.
00:22 - 00:25
I mean things like team sports, religion and work
00:26 - 00:30
other communities that happen over time or you're just kind of born into by default.
00:30 - 00:34
A couple of those communities are things like your family,
00:34 - 00:37
the town or city you live in and the country you live in
00:37 - 00:38
like it or not,
00:38 - 00:41
you're part of those communities because you do things like vote and
00:41 - 00:44
interact with people near you that are also in that community.
00:44 - 00:47
The next thing that we're going to talk about is how to join the community.
00:48 - 00:50
You can join almost any community, you would like
00:51 - 00:53
some have expenses or requirements you might have to meet.
00:54 - 00:55
For example,
00:55 - 00:57
you might have to pay some kind of fee if
00:57 - 00:59
you're going to join something like a country club,
00:59 - 01:02
others might require things like hockey year to join a hockey team
01:03 - 01:05
and you might even have to follow certain rules
01:05 - 01:07
if you join something like a religious community.
01:08 - 01:09
The next thing I would like to talk about
01:10 - 01:13
are some of my communities that I see on a weekly basis.
01:14 - 01:18
I see my family and work community almost every day and even
01:18 - 01:19
though they can get on my nerves from time to time,
01:19 - 01:21
I benefit from both of them.
01:21 - 01:23
My family gives me love and support,
01:23 - 01:26
whereas my work community keeps me tied to the real
01:26 - 01:28
world and feels like it gives me a purpose.
01:28 - 01:31
Some of my other communities are my friends,
01:31 - 01:34
and when it gets a little colder outside my hockey team,
01:34 - 01:37
my friends, like my family also give me support,
01:37 - 01:40
but they make sure I have a little fun in life to my hockey community,
01:40 - 01:45
gives me the chance to let out a little energy and sometimes when I need it, anger too.
01:46 - 01:50
Now, time for me, the most important question in this presentation,
01:50 - 01:52
why is community so important?
01:54 - 01:57
Have you ever heard that saying? It takes a village to raise a child?
01:57 - 02:01
Well that villages, that child's community and for better or worse,
02:01 - 02:04
that kid wouldn't be the same if he didn't have that community to raise him,
02:04 - 02:05
there are many other reasons.
02:05 - 02:07
Having community is important,
02:07 - 02:10
they can show support for each other and do things
02:10 - 02:12
to help the greater good like a city council does.
02:14 - 02:20
Of course there are many more reasons, but I think the most important thing they do
02:20 - 02:22
is they almost all make you feel like you belong,
02:23 - 02:26
humans aren't meant to isolate you need to be around other people.
02:26 - 02:28
Even if it's only for a little bit,
02:28 - 02:30
if you don't, you won't ever feel like you belong
02:31 - 02:34
that in my opinion is one of the most if not the most
02:35 - 02:37
important thing that communities do for us.
02:38 - 02:39
In conclusion,
02:39 - 02:42
communities are very important. Everyone needs them.
02:42 - 02:46
We always have at the end of the day, we are pack animals.
02:46 - 02:50
What I want to leave you with today is just one question,
02:51 - 02:52
What are some of your communities?
