  1. Hello.
  2. I'm Cristian Dyleski and I'm
  3. the instructional supervisor for student development
  4. and wellness for Milford Public Schools for grades six through 12.
  5. I'm excited to share with all of you the updates for
  6. this year's program of studies and our course selection process for students
  7. today,
  8. we're going to review the different
  9. graduation requirements are ongoing commitments and timelines
  10. and the department updates so that you will have all of this information
  11. to be able to make your teacher recommendations and then enter into those
  12. important conversations with students in advance
  13. of them making their course selections.
  14. So our students,
  15. starting with the next year's graduating class are required to have
  16. a minimum of 25 credits to be eligible for graduation.
  17. These new requirements include nine credits in the humanities,
  18. including civics and the arts, nine credits in science,
  19. technology engineering and math, one credit in physical education and wellness
  20. that spread over four years as well as one credit in health and safety education.
  21. That is also spread over four years,
  22. One credit in world languages
  23. and the one credit Mastery blaze diploma assessment
  24. similar to past years.
  25. We will be sharing with you a staff resource folder.
  26. That folder contains the staff handbook,
  27. which has the grade prerequisites recommendations for leveling
  28. leveling as well as the schoolwide scheduling days
  29. and instructions for making those online course recommendations and requests.
  30. It also includes links to the student guides for incoming ninth graders,
  31. as well as our, um, rising sophomores through seniors.
  32. All of this which will be shared with you and a folder
  33. for your resource and the information that's presented in today's presentation.
  34. He's really contained in that staff handbook so you
  35. can refer to that at a later point.
  36. These are the important dates to keep in mind as we head into
  37. a program of studies season and course
  38. recommendations in advance of students scheduling.
  39. So starting today, going through February nine,
  40. looking for all teachers to go into power school and
  41. make recommendations for what students should take for next year.
  42. It's important that we enter those recommendations so that when parents have those
  43. conversations with their Children at home and they log into the portal,
  44. they'll be able to see that you made that recommendation for their students.
  45. Um As many of you know,
  46. we've also been very busy putting together virtual elective affairs at
  47. both of our high schools were looking to put that out to
  48. students on february 8th and it will also be shared with parents
  49. so they can access that as a family discussion at home.
  50. On february 4th and seventh,
  51. there will be a short video shared in all
  52. english classes for our current freshmen sophomores and juniors.
  53. So our students can have an overview of what this
  54. process will look like and how to access all these resources
  55. That will be paired with an email that they
  56. and families will receive with all of that information.
  57. We really appreciate the English teachers taking a few minutes
  58. out of class to share that on those dates.
  59. So I will be sharing those videos with you um in advance prior to the 4th and the 7th
  60. And then on the 8th and the 9th will be our school wide scheduling days.
  61. That's an IAN and FDA as it currently stands.
  62. And the hope is that each teacher will be able to dedicate class time to have
  63. individual discussions with each student about what that
  64. student can potentially take for next year.
  65. Now,
  66. I know that some teachers in the past have really
  67. preferred doing teacher recommendations either in advance um you know,
  68. sitting down for a block of time,
  69. possibly this afternoon is one recommended time and
  70. entering those recommendations or some teachers like doing
  71. it on the scheduling days where they talk with the student and right then and there,
  72. enter it into the computer.
  73. Um either is fine.
  74. The hope though, is that by the end of the day, on the ninth,
  75. by the end of school um that those recommendations will
  76. be in the computer Because after school on February nine,
  77. that portal will be open for requests,
  78. meaning that parents and students will be able to log in
  79. and actually see whether or not a recommendation was entered.
  80. Um and then on February 17, during advisory,
  81. we're going to make sure that we have all of our
  82. advisors check to see that our students actually entered requests.
  83. Um some of our students need a little extra support and this
  84. helps streamline the process beyond when they meet with our school counselors.
  85. Mm hmm.
  86. So just to recap, this are typical timeline is really that in february,
  87. all this work kicks off.
  88. And then in March,
  89. our school counselors work with our students
  90. to verify that the things they requested are
  91. actually meeting their graduation requirements and makes sense
  92. for their overall program over four years.
  93. And then that continues into april
  94. And that's when the building's really began to do their FTE planning.
  95. And we build those schedules.
  96. Network continues through May and into June when we
  97. verify everything um and check against final grades.
  98. And there's a very similar process that happens for our middle
  99. school students for the upcoming 9th graders for next year,
  100. where it tends to just happen a couple of weeks later.
  101. So that will also be occurring this year.
  102. So as I mentioned, we're going to be having our school wide scheduling days.
  103. Um and as I said before that we're going to make
  104. sure we review options for students with as their teacher,
  105. discuss the prerequisites the sequences.
  106. Um
  107. and then make sure that those recommendations are entered into power school.
  108. Uh our students are going to finalize all these requests.
  109. They're going to do that part of the process
  110. at home and that will be communicated to them.
  111. Yeah.
  112. So now let's take a look at some of the updates for this year's program of studies.
  113. Ah So a link to the live program of studies will be sent to you when it is available,
  114. but in the meantime, these are the things that are different and new.
  115. So for humanity's for our course updates, there is a new course
  116. that is an elective course that will be open
  117. to 11th and 12th grade students for next year.
  118. It's called african american black and Puerto Rican latino studies.
  119. Uh it falls within our social studies course offerings and
  120. again is open to 11th and 12th grade students.
  121. There are no changes for world language and no changes for our English offerings.
  122. Um we definitely have in response to the requests from our
  123. school counselors and made some additions to the humanities courses,
  124. um, courses that will fulfill that additional humanities credit.
  125. So now that is being expanded to include managing the learning environment,
  126. methods of teaching and learning business law, introduction to business,
  127. sports and entertainment marketing, marketing, one,
  128. marketing to business management and yearbook.
  129. Now there are a number of updates for our stem courses.
  130. So in science there will no longer be observational astronomy.
  131. This is of course that typically was not being offered.
  132. So, um, that is being removed from the program of studies
  133. in mathematics. There's no changes.
  134. Couple of name changes in the business department where personal finance one um,
  135. is now just being named personal finance.
  136. Personal finance to investing is now going to
  137. be known as stark stock market investing.
  138. Um and accounting one is switched to just accounting.
  139. There are new course descriptions for personal finance, stock market investing,
  140. marketing one and introduction to business.
  141. Um, And the course of retail marketing um will be dropped for next year.
  142. That will not be included.
  143. Additional updates in the technology,
  144. engineering and communication department includes some name changes.
  145. So would Tech one is now, would Tech one. Introduction to woodworking.
  146. Wood tec two is wood tec to manufacturing. Wood tec three is wood tec. Three.
  147. Advanced Manufacturing.
  148. Powertech one will be Powertech one,
  149. small gas engine power tech to will be Powertech to introduction to automotive.
  150. Powertech three will be Powertech three, advanced automotive.
  151. Um And there are new course descriptions for a number
  152. of those tech courses that are indicated here as well.
  153. There's also some updates for our family and consumer science courses.
  154. There's a new course for next year called bakeshop and new course descriptions
  155. for managing the learning environment methods of
  156. teaching and learning and interior design.
  157. Um, For the health sciences, there's a change in grade level for possible.
  158. Sienna students.
  159. Uh,
  160. certified nursing assistant will be open to 11th graders
  161. who will be 16 Because if they're not 16,
  162. they're not eligible to participate in the clinical portion.
  163. Um there also have been expanded and expansion to the courses that are um,
  164. that we are available to for students to take for the
  165. additional stem credit and those will now include interior design,
  166. introduction to photo digital media, Photo Photography one and photography too.
  167. So those are additional opportunities for students beginning next year.
  168. Uh Those opportunities do not apply to students for this
  169. year only for next year updates for our art,
  170. music and library media departments.
  171. Music, No changes for library media in ap research,
  172. the language has now been clarified that students must take ap seminar
  173. prior to taking Ap research.
  174. So that was the assumed sequence before, but now it's been clarified for us.
  175. Um In art uh advanced studio,
  176. there's been a prerequisite added for successful completion of at
  177. least one art course prior to enrolling in that course.
  178. And some name changes for some art courses
  179. where digital photo is now introduction to photo
  180. and advanced photo one is now Photography won
  181. and advanced photo two is now photography too,
  182. for the student development and wellness department.
  183. Um We've moved over one of the PE electives will now be under the health section.
  184. So optimal nutrition for athletic performance will now
  185. be considered a health elective uh same course.
  186. Um But just under the under the health designation,
  187. there will continue to be summer PE and health
  188. programming available um and students will need administrator approval,
  189. so they should see their counselor for any questions about that.
  190. And there will be a new course offered more info to come
  191. on this in our interdisciplinary department for called if you'd love it,
  192. teach it.
  193. So those are the updates there.
  194. Um we want to remember that when we talk with students about
  195. planning their schedules that students are required to in order to be considered
  196. full time high school students that they have to carry at least 6.5
  197. credits so they need to plan for between 6.5 and eight credits.
  198. And we do not have any requirements that students
  199. have a study hall built into their schedules.
  200. And as always we are continuing to submit course revisions to N. C. A.
  201. For approval and that most up to date list will always be available.
  202. In addition to this,
  203. I just want to remember that we make all of our scheduling
  204. decisions through the lens of what is best for our students.
  205. So just because something is um you know is it falls within a sequence if
  206. that's not what is best for kids then we wanted to have that very honest discussion
  207. with them about making sure that it's
  208. an appropriate level of challenge and that their
  209. um and that this is going to be the best thing for their overall program.
  210. So as long as we keep what's in mind uh in terms of what is best for our students,
  211. um Those are the really important conversations.
  212. If you have any questions,
  213. please feel free to reach out to me or
  214. you're building administrators and I really look forward to um
  215. those conversations in classrooms and helping support our buildings as
  216. we go through the course request and scheduling season.
  217. So I hope all of you have a wonderful afternoon.
  218. Please take this time to work individually and
  219. to confer with your department colleagues around recommendation,
  220. planning for your students.
  221. Uh, if you have any questions about actually making the recommendations,
  222. there's information in the,
  223. in the materials that were provided with you and
  224. you can also reach out to the data processor
  225. in your individual buildings who can help troubleshoot any
  226. issues that you might be coming up with.
  227. So at foreign that would be tammy Calame and that law that would be Joanne.
  228. Um, so please reach out to them if you have any issues.
  229. And I hope you guys all have a wonderful afternoon. Thank you so much.
