00:01 - 00:03
Welcome back, everybody.
00:03 - 00:04
Welcome to school.
00:05 - 00:07
Hello? Mhm.
00:09 - 00:11
My name is Luke Benson, and I'm a brand new
00:11 - 00:15
teacher. Just graduated with my English degree from Purdue Northwest.
00:17 - 00:20
Um, ever since I was younger, I loved, uh, the
00:20 - 00:23
written word creative endeavor such as poetry and music writing,
00:24 - 00:25
um, reading.
00:26 - 00:29
And now I'm excited to be able to share some
00:29 - 00:31
things that I have learned with the kids.
00:32 - 00:35
And, um, let me show you, tell you just a
00:35 - 00:36
little bit of the ways that I'm going to do
00:36 - 00:39
that actually come from a very different background.
00:39 - 00:43
I worked for over 12 years in the road construction
00:43 - 00:50
industry, actually, and worked with, um, rocks and tar and
00:50 - 00:51
physics and things like that.
00:52 - 00:55
Um, but I decided to go back to school and
00:55 - 00:59
actually finished my degree in English and go back to
01:00 - 01:03
more of my passion and more fulfilling career, which would
01:03 - 01:07
be, um, sharing my creative passion with students.
01:07 - 01:12
Uh, my philosophy is a very balanced philosophy, meaning I
01:13 - 01:15
am organized, and I had planned, but I'm also very
01:15 - 01:18
flexible. Um, and this is a great skill to teach
01:18 - 01:21
all of my students, Um, meaning that there is a
01:21 - 01:23
right way to do things, and it's important to follow
01:24 - 01:27
the rules of grammar and writing things like this, but
01:27 - 01:30
also to be creative within that and to really have
01:31 - 01:33
the heart and the field behind it.
01:34 - 01:38
Um, I think no matter what the field is, I
01:38 - 01:39
stress very much with my students.
01:40 - 01:42
Um, no matter what field they're going into, it could
01:42 - 01:46
be, um, cleaning a hotel, working for a tech company,
01:47 - 01:48
working for a big corporation.
01:49 - 01:51
It could be in the field of science or technology
01:52 - 01:53
or mathematics or anything.
01:54 - 01:54
You're gonna have coworkers.
01:55 - 01:57
You're gonna have people that you need to communicate with.
01:57 - 02:00
So learning how to communicate better in the real world,
02:01 - 02:06
um, is really, uh, English is for everybody, whether you
02:06 - 02:10
like literature or not really gonna help you in your
02:10 - 02:10
future career.
02:11 - 02:14
So, um, it is practical and applicable to all my
02:14 - 02:18
kids. Uh, collaboration is going to be a big thing.
02:18 - 02:23
Um, we're not just not just always working alone.
02:24 - 02:27
There's time in a place to work alone, but, uh,
02:28 - 02:30
kids really can learn a lot more by from each
02:30 - 02:32
other, not just for me, but from each other.
02:32 - 02:34
I can learn more from my peers and my fellow
02:34 - 02:36
teachers and the kids can learn a lot from each
02:36 - 02:39
other a couple of different ways that I'm going to
02:39 - 02:44
use technology in the classroom, Um, at times flipping the
02:44 - 02:49
classroom, meaning, uh, allowing the students to choose what the
02:49 - 02:51
subject of study is going to be.
02:51 - 02:52
Not always my choice.
02:52 - 02:55
Allowing them to maybe bring in their own song or
02:55 - 02:59
their own, uh, book or their own clip of a
02:59 - 03:01
video, things like that to discuss and analyze and really
03:02 - 03:06
dig into and get behind, um, another way that I'm
03:06 - 03:09
going to use Technology is calling in the experts I
03:10 - 03:14
know very much to when to admit that I don't
03:14 - 03:15
always know the answers.
03:16 - 03:18
Or maybe I don't know the right way exactly or
03:18 - 03:19
the best way.
03:19 - 03:24
And that doesn't make me week or un prepared.
03:24 - 03:27
Just makes me truthful to the kids and on.
03:27 - 03:31
There's times where I can have a video chat writing
03:31 - 03:36
class with an expert or with unauthorized e in a
03:36 - 03:39
certain field or somebody that can just really facilitated discussion,
03:40 - 03:42
uh, in a certain topic, the best way and somebody
03:43 - 03:43
that is.
03:43 - 03:45
It's different for the kids to have a different voice
03:45 - 03:45
coming into the classroom.
03:46 - 03:47
So we're going to use that technology a lot.
03:48 - 03:51
Another thing that we're gonna use is just and overall
03:53 - 04:00
philosophy of, uh, organization, Elektronik organization, um, Elektronik, Citizenship.
04:01 - 04:06
Elektronik. Um, okay, preparedness.
04:07 - 04:10
That is really going to set them up for future
04:10 - 04:12
success. Like I said, no matter what they're going into,
04:13 - 04:15
maybe when they leave my class, they never want to
04:15 - 04:18
write another essay again or dissect a line of poetry
04:18 - 04:19
or anything like that.
04:20 - 04:22
And if that's not what they're into, that's fine with
04:22 - 04:24
me. But they are going to find that the tools
04:25 - 04:27
that they've learned to communicate in the tools that they've
04:27 - 04:34
learned to, um, be prepared, um, within their language and
04:34 - 04:37
their communication skills is going to build upon and really
04:37 - 04:39
going to set them up for future success, no matter
04:39 - 04:40
what they do.
04:40 - 04:45
So I am excited about it, and I, um, hope
04:45 - 04:48
to do the best I can for your kids and
04:48 - 04:48
all the students.
04:49 - 04:52
And, um, please talk to me whenever you want Any
04:52 - 04:53
questions you
