  2. um the Dallas sent
  3. development of Akilah in Akilah and the b
  4. and so
  5. the first I want to talk about her intellectual development and
  6. we see Akila growing in the use of physical active learning. And we see this
  7. um that when you know through her mentor,
  8. Akila learns that she learns best when she keeps the rhythm with her body.
  9. And we see this mainly
  10. through
  11. jump roping, the practice of jump roping as
  12. she is learning words.
  13. We also see that Tequila is moving from rote memorization to application.
  14. So like initially we see Akila just learning how to spell
  15. because she's able to memorize the words, you know from the dictionary
  16. and from just by seeing the words.
  17. Um but later she develops a skill not just to memorize,
  18. she learns latin roots and phonetic skills
  19. to spell words he has never heard or seen before.
  20. And she learns new words
  21. uh mainly through constructive learning.
  22. And so now we move into the physical development. We see um how Akila, you know
  23. has definitely has hormonal changes.
  24. Um as she is in middle school and the examples that we see is um you know,
  25. Tequila tackles with feelings toward her friend, she has met
  26. uh through the her spelling bee competitions
  27. and she develops a crush on him.
  28. Um Throughout the movie
  29. you see a killer experience a wide range of emotions,
  30. She struggles with controlling her temper.
  31. I'm she constantly has outbursts when
  32. um an elder talks to her
  33. and she struggles with this.
  34. We also see the increase in physical activity as mentioned,
  35. Akila increases in physical activity with jump roping.
  36. She's constantly energetic. We see um,
  37. she's constantly on the move.
  38. Um, and within her body
  39. an increase in physical activity
  40. and
  41. and in her social and emotional development.
  42. Um, we see um Akila
  43. um
  44. struggling with pure pressure. Akila initially has internal conflict
  45. doing her desire to succeed and be a spelling PGA champion.
  46. I am not wanting to do the spelling bee at all due to her classmates perceive her
  47. has a nerd.
  48. Um,
  49. initially it Akila attempts to act like she does not study in class in the beginning.
  50. Um, Akila also does not turn her homer
  51. and yet she does find in, in class assessments.
  52. She also
  53. uh
  54. skipped class.
  55. She also had low attendance and yet she did well in, in class assessments.
  56. Um, so we see that clearly there's, you know,
  57. this behavior is a Aquinas attempt to fulfill her desires to, yes,
  58. she wants to succeed in school, but at the same time
  59. she wants to fit in with everyone else.
  60. Um, later, we see this growth, the shift of um
  61. Akila to
  62. move away from
  63. uh, this peer pressure, but to really be proud of um,
  64. her identity and you know, wanting to learn
  65. and taking ownership of her learning.
  66. Uh, you also see a family, the growth in her family teacher and community support as
  67. um, you know, initially Tequila did not really have a family support.
  68. Um
  69. A kayla's mom was too busy with work and one of her brothers were,
  70. was is constantly getting in trouble with the law.
  71. Um so you know this
  72. ah
  73. initially, you know, discourages her from
  74. progressing
  75. uh in
  76. spelling in the spelling bee and
  77. making the right decisions.
  78. Um
  79. Akilah had desires to not share everything
  80. with her mom about school matters initially,
  81. but towards the end,
  82. um there truly was not only family support but community support
  83. for a killer to be successful and you know, and therefore because of this family,
  84. increasing family engagement and community support,
  85. um Akilah has highest self esteem of herself.
  86. Next we move into moral development. So initially,
  87. uh you see the struggle that Tequila going through,
  88. goes through and wanting to do the right thing.
  89. Um
  90. Like we initially see that
  91. Tequila goes
  92. to her friend's house or school without her mom's permission
  93. to. Um
  94. and Akilah also signed up to participate in the spelling bee, you know,
  95. Falsifying her parent's signature on this permission slip.
  96. Clearly, that is wrong, right.
  97. Um But eventually,
  98. um Akila realizes that you know, these were wrong actions she had made
  99. and she did reconcile with her mom.
  100. And
  101. that is my overall um presentation of
  102. um the adolescent development in Akila,
  103. uh in this movie,
