00:00 - 00:01
Good morning everyone.
00:02 - 00:04
It's lovely to be able to talk to you on
00:05 - 00:06
this wonderful Wednesday.
00:07 - 00:09
I was worried it was going to be a wet
00:09 - 00:13
Wednesday but the rain has stopped so I've decided it
00:13 - 00:14
is wonderful Wednesday today.
00:15 - 00:18
So today I'm going to talk to you about one
00:18 - 00:22
of the stories of Jesus's life as we know, Easter
00:23 - 00:26
has been and gone, jesus rose from the tomb and
00:27 - 00:30
we're getting ready for the period of time before he
00:30 - 00:31
sends back to Heaven.
00:33 - 00:36
So today I am going to tell you about one
00:36 - 00:38
of the miracles that he performed.
00:38 - 00:40
Now. I am going to be looking down today because
00:41 - 00:43
I am going to read the version of this story.
00:44 - 00:47
So we know that Jesus lived round about 2000 years
00:47 - 00:52
ago and in this time there were many illnesses that
00:53 - 00:56
that couldn't be healed because the medicines didn't exist at
00:56 - 00:57
that time.
00:59 - 01:02
As we know with the current pandemic.
01:03 - 01:06
When coronavirus first arrived, we didn't have vaccines for it.
01:07 - 01:10
And that's why people are only being vaccinated now because
01:11 - 01:15
the scientists have developed that medication that protection from it.
01:15 - 01:19
But in this time, 2000 years ago, very few medicines
01:20 - 01:20
were in existence.
01:22 - 01:23
And leprosy was one of those illnesses.
01:24 - 01:27
Now you may know this story already, but I don't
01:27 - 01:30
believe I've told you this version in previous years.
01:31 - 01:35
So it's a skin disease and it's infectious, healthy people
01:36 - 01:38
will really frightened of catching this disease.
01:38 - 01:42
Um so if you have leprosy, you were made to
01:42 - 01:43
live away from everybody else.
01:45 - 01:48
So the story I'm going to tell you is a
01:48 - 01:48
bible story.
01:49 - 01:53
Um and in the story a small boy called Ruben
01:53 - 01:57
meets a man who is literally skipping and jumping for
01:58 - 02:01
joy. Okay, the man he has met was the man
02:02 - 02:05
the man has met, jesus and clearly something amazing has
02:06 - 02:10
happened. So this story is called the man who said
02:10 - 02:14
thank you, and it's by Catherine Costa Rubin.
02:15 - 02:17
Came out of his house with a big basket and
02:18 - 02:21
a long, long list of instructions from his mother of
02:21 - 02:22
things to buy at the market.
02:23 - 02:24
Please don't belong!
02:25 - 02:26
She shouted after him.
02:26 - 02:29
I'm waiting for that flower to make some bread.
02:31 - 02:35
Suddenly, it seemed from nowhere a man came hearing around
02:35 - 02:39
the corner, knocking Ruben basket and all straight to the
02:39 - 02:43
ground. Hey, steady on spluttered Ruben as he brushed the
02:43 - 02:46
dust off his clothes and then chased after the basket
02:46 - 02:47
which had been caught in the wind.
02:48 - 02:51
But the man who was thin and dressed only in
02:51 - 02:53
rags, had hardly noticed Reuben.
02:54 - 02:56
He was so desperate to get where he was going.
02:57 - 03:00
He was jumping and skipping and leaping, throwing his hands
03:01 - 03:03
in the air and shouting at the top of his
03:03 - 03:07
voice, jesus, jesus, wait for me, wait for me!
03:08 - 03:13
Jesus Ruben knew that name, Jesus was the miracle worker
03:13 - 03:16
who had been traveling around the nearby villages and towns.
03:17 - 03:20
He was the one that Reuben had seen baptist in
03:20 - 03:22
the river Jordan last year.
03:23 - 03:27
Could it be that Jesus had come to his village?
03:30 - 03:32
This was all far more exciting than going to the
03:32 - 03:36
market to buy flour for his mother, Ruben grabbed the
03:36 - 03:38
basket and made his way after the man.
03:39 - 03:41
It was quite easy to catch him up because he
03:41 - 03:44
kept stumbling and tripping over in his eagerness to find
03:44 - 03:47
jesus as they rounded a bend in the road.
03:48 - 03:53
There was jesus talking and laughing with a crowd of
03:53 - 03:56
followers. He always seemed to make everyone happy.
03:57 - 04:00
The man in rags gathered his strength and made a
04:00 - 04:00
final dash.
04:01 - 04:03
He fell at jesus feet.
04:03 - 04:10
Thank you Martha, thank you, Jesus looked down and he
04:10 - 04:13
smiled. He was pleased to see him.
04:14 - 04:15
Where are the other 9?
04:16 - 04:16
He asked.
04:17 - 04:20
Is it only you who came back to me to
04:20 - 04:21
give thanks for your healing?
04:23 - 04:26
The man looked around and shrieked.
04:29 - 04:31
Jesus smiled at the man in rags.
04:31 - 04:34
Once again it was a smile that seemed to light
04:35 - 04:36
up everything in sight.
04:36 - 04:37
Get up!
04:37 - 04:41
He said to the man, Your faith has healed and
04:41 - 04:41
saved you.
04:42 - 04:46
And then as quickly as they appeared, jesus and his
04:46 - 04:49
friends disappeared around the next bend in the road and
04:50 - 04:51
all became quiet and still.
04:53 - 04:55
The man sank down in the shade of a large
04:55 - 04:59
tree. He seemed exhausted, but was grinning from ear to
04:59 - 05:01
ear. Reuben went to join him.
05:02 - 05:06
Yeah, the man explained I've been sick for a really
05:07 - 05:07
long time.
05:08 - 05:10
I had to leave my home because I caught leprosy.
05:11 - 05:13
It's a dreadful disease and very infectious.
05:14 - 05:16
I went to live with nine other people with the
05:17 - 05:17
same disease.
05:18 - 05:21
We all came to jesus together barely an hour ago
05:22 - 05:23
and begged him to make us well again.
05:24 - 05:27
We'd heard about other people had healed and we knew
05:28 - 05:31
he could do it, but Jesus told us to go
05:31 - 05:31
on our way.
05:32 - 05:36
At first we were disappointed, we thought nothing had changed,
05:37 - 05:41
but then bit by bit we noticed our strength coming
05:41 - 05:45
back. The sore places of skin started to heal before
05:46 - 05:49
our very eyes and everything began to look as if
05:49 - 05:50
it did before we were ill.
05:51 - 05:52
It was a miracle.
05:53 - 05:54
We were so overjoyed.
05:55 - 05:57
Now we can return home to all the people who
05:58 - 05:59
love us and all the people we've missed so dearly.
06:00 - 06:03
My wife and my Children will be so happy and
06:04 - 06:04
so surprised.
06:05 - 06:08
But first, even before going home to see my family,
06:09 - 06:12
I had to thank jesus Ruben was astounded.
06:13 - 06:14
What a story.
06:15 - 06:16
Wait until he told his mom.
06:17 - 06:18
Oh no!
06:19 - 06:21
His mom Ruben grabbed the shopping basket.
06:22 - 06:23
I have to go.
06:23 - 06:23
He splitters.
06:24 - 06:27
He scrambled to his feet, taking off at top speed
06:28 - 06:29
in the direction of the market.
06:29 - 06:32
He shouted behind him as he ran, Thank you for
06:32 - 06:33
sharing your story.
06:34 - 06:34
It's awesome.
06:37 - 06:41
Okay, I'm going to ask a couple of questions now
06:41 - 06:45
and I want you to just spend some time thinking
06:45 - 06:47
your teacher might want to pause me because I'm going
06:48 - 06:49
to ask the questions one after the other.
06:50 - 06:52
So you've got time to reflect on what you've heard.
06:55 - 06:58
So why do you think that jesus asked the whereabouts
06:59 - 07:01
of the other nine men that he had healed?
07:02 - 07:04
Do you think it was because he wanted all of
07:04 - 07:05
them to say thank you.
07:07 - 07:14
Okay, my next question does joy always result in thankfulness?
07:16 - 07:19
Yeah. All of the 10 men who have been cured
07:19 - 07:22
of their leprosy must be filled with joy, but there
07:22 - 07:25
were nine that didn't come back to say thank you.
07:26 - 07:26
What do you think?
07:28 - 07:29
Does joy always result in thankfulness?
07:32 - 07:33
Yeah. Okay.
07:35 - 07:38
I'm going to say thank you prayer in just a
07:38 - 07:42
moment to finish our collective worship today, but I'm going
07:42 - 07:45
to start our prayer in a slightly different way because
07:46 - 07:49
I want to think about joy because we have joy
07:49 - 07:53
in our lives all the time and sometimes they're from
07:53 - 07:54
quite ordinary things.
07:55 - 07:57
I'm going to share some things with you, three objects
07:58 - 08:00
that bring joy to my life.
08:01 - 08:03
Now I'm going to hold up my cup here.
08:04 - 08:06
So Children, you know, you often see me if you
08:07 - 08:10
can pass my my office, there is a cup of
08:10 - 08:15
tea on my desk, small everyday thing but fills me
08:15 - 08:19
with great joy um and calmness that I can hold
08:19 - 08:21
the warm hot cup of tea.
08:22 - 08:27
Um and feel happy brings me great happiness at the
08:27 - 08:28
moment. My tea cup is empty.
08:29 - 08:32
So after this collective worship I should I should probably
08:33 - 08:35
get a cup of tea and share that small moment
08:35 - 08:35
of joy.
08:37 - 08:40
My second item, those of you that are at the
08:40 - 08:42
gate first thing in the morning you know very well
08:43 - 08:44
is this bunch of please?
08:46 - 08:51
Okay and these are my school keys, The keys to
08:51 - 08:51
the school.
08:52 - 08:54
And it does have, I put them on their special
08:54 - 08:57
keys and I don't know if it reads forwards or
08:57 - 09:01
backwards to you, but that one says Jamie on there.
09:01 - 09:02
So this was a present.
09:02 - 09:04
This key ring was a present from my nieces.
09:05 - 09:06
My nieces made it for me.
09:06 - 09:09
But that stuff fills me with a little bit of
09:09 - 09:10
joy because I remember I'm loved by my nieces.
09:11 - 09:14
But the reason these keys bring me joy is because
09:14 - 09:16
they remind me of all of you.
09:17 - 09:20
It brings me great joy to know that I am
09:20 - 09:24
responsible for all of you for all the Children in
09:25 - 09:25
our school.
09:26 - 09:28
And that's a very precious thing for me to be
09:28 - 09:29
able to do.
09:29 - 09:33
So I treat these keys just as I treat you
09:33 - 09:33
with great care.
09:34 - 09:35
And that brings me great joy.
09:37 - 09:40
Now my last item, those of you who are Eagle.
09:40 - 09:43
I might have noticed that I've taken my wedding rings
09:43 - 09:43
off today.
09:44 - 09:46
So I've got three rings that I normally wear on
09:47 - 09:48
on my ring finger here.
09:49 - 09:52
And this ring, it's a very tiny one.
09:52 - 09:56
But this tiny ring is so precious to me and
09:56 - 09:59
brings me great joy because it's my wedding ring.
09:59 - 10:04
So it reminds me that I am really loved by
10:04 - 10:07
my husband and cared for and I have a partner
10:07 - 10:08
in my life forever.
10:09 - 10:11
And that's what the circle circle is eternal.
10:12 - 10:15
But there is another reason that this ring is very
10:16 - 10:18
very special to me because it reminds me of my
10:19 - 10:21
name, me and now this sounds quite funny.
10:21 - 10:22
Why would this remind me of my grandma?
10:23 - 10:28
Um It brings me great joy and it's from sadness
10:28 - 10:29
comes great joy.
10:30 - 10:33
My nanny died before I got married and I was
10:34 - 10:34
left a little bit of money.
10:35 - 10:38
So I was very lucky that mr pardon?
10:38 - 10:41
I bought our wedding rings with the little bit of
10:41 - 10:43
money that was left to me by my nanny.
10:44 - 10:47
So it reminds me of my my my special partnership
10:48 - 10:48
with my husband.
10:49 - 10:52
But it also reminds me of my nanny and those
10:52 - 10:54
of you have heard me talk about her before, you
10:54 - 10:56
know she is my absolute hero.
10:57 - 11:04
So those three items, cup of tea keys and my
11:05 - 11:07
wedding ring are three things that I see every day.
11:08 - 11:11
But they do bring great joy to me.
11:11 - 11:12
I'm going to pop my rings back on.
11:13 - 11:17
So before I start the prayer, I would like to
11:17 - 11:20
think like you to think if there are any everyday
11:20 - 11:22
objects that bring you great joy.
11:23 - 11:26
So we'll just take a few moments and then I'll
11:26 - 11:28
say a prayer that I'd like you to listen to
11:28 - 11:29
with care.
11:30 - 11:32
And then at the end you can say amen if
11:33 - 11:39
you agree, wow right.
11:41 - 11:45
Dear God, thank you for the small things in our
11:45 - 11:47
life that we see every day that when we really
11:48 - 11:50
think about them bring us great joy.
11:51 - 11:53
Whether it's the cup of tea that brings us some
11:53 - 12:01
calm. The keys that unlocked special places the items that
12:01 - 12:03
are special to us because of the person they remind
12:04 - 12:04
us of.
12:07 - 12:09
We thank you for the many joys in our lives
12:10 - 12:13
and ask that you help us to remember them on
12:13 - 12:14
this day and every day.
12:15 - 12:16
Oh man.
12:17 - 12:20
Okay. Thank you for listening everyone and I look forward
12:20 - 12:22
to talking to you tomorrow.
12:23 - 12:23
Bye bye for now.
