00:02 - 00:02
first of all.
00:02 - 00:03
Hello class.
00:03 - 00:05
I hope you are all doing well.
00:06 - 00:10
My name's COlwyn and I conducted a project labeled driveway
00:11 - 00:21
renovation. So the goal of this project is to finish
00:22 - 00:26
off the landscaping surrounding the previously paved driveway by completing
00:27 - 00:28
a full driveway renovation.
00:29 - 00:32
This includes installing a proper drainage system with a catch
00:32 - 00:37
basin To efficiently allow the driveway to drain along well
00:37 - 00:42
with placing cloth and covering the area with 226" rock
00:43 - 00:44
along the south side.
00:44 - 00:47
We will place a retaining wall ensuring the wall is
00:48 - 00:51
leveled to the driveway and the final steps will include
00:51 - 00:55
installing a gate at the entrance along with cleaning up
00:56 - 00:58
the whole area to the project sponsors desire.
01:00 - 01:02
Now let me show you some photos and give you
01:02 - 01:05
an idea of what the site looked like prior to
01:05 - 01:08
renovation. Yeah.
01:11 - 01:13
As you can see, I'm standing in the middle of
01:13 - 01:16
the driveway and you see the retaining wall yet to
01:17 - 01:17
be built.
01:17 - 01:18
Sitting beside me.
01:21 - 01:24
As we move on to the next page, you'll see
01:24 - 01:27
another shot from a different angle just showing um where
01:27 - 01:31
we're about to start excavating and so on and so
01:32 - 01:38
forth. Now let's move on and go through our three
01:39 - 01:42
main stakeholders that we have to keep satisfied.
01:43 - 01:46
Doug Win, who was the project sponsor and requires an
01:46 - 01:47
update every day.
01:49 - 01:52
Shauna win who is the homeowner and does not allow
01:52 - 01:56
us to work past three p.m. And lastly, Cory Wynne,
01:57 - 01:59
who will be our main labour slash helper.
02:00 - 02:03
Therefore we must ensure he is happy to have this
02:03 - 02:07
project be a success All three bring in very big
02:07 - 02:14
importance. So let's get more into discussing the work that
02:14 - 02:17
needs to be done and the five key deliverables we
02:17 - 02:20
will aim to complete on time and of course with
02:20 - 02:21
quality in mind.
02:23 - 02:26
First we installed a catch basin that will require 25
02:27 - 02:30
ft of drainpipe properly sloped to allow drainage.
02:32 - 02:35
We will then cover the area with dirt, filter cloth
02:36 - 02:39
and lastly ornamental river rock to fill the area and
02:39 - 02:40
clearing it up.
02:43 - 02:46
Second, we excavated and installed a retaining wall that was
02:46 - 02:50
total of 100 and 30 square feet, including the inside
02:50 - 02:52
outside and to take offs.
02:53 - 02:56
Now we have issues with this as we needed it
02:56 - 02:56
to stay levels.
02:57 - 03:00
We adjusted the plans and leveled out the area with
03:00 - 03:04
ground rock, following by watering it down and for good
03:04 - 03:08
measure packing it down with a packer that allows us
03:08 - 03:10
to place the rocks warm by one at the same
03:10 - 03:14
level. The suggestion made it much easier to complete and
03:15 - 03:17
sped things up drastically when it came to the retaining
03:18 - 03:23
wall. Third, we sculptured the north end of the driveway
03:23 - 03:28
to allow for natural drainage falling by placing 420 square
03:28 - 03:32
feet of filter cloth and ornamental river rock to clean
03:32 - 03:34
up the area and cover everything.
03:38 - 03:44
Fourth, we will buy an install a gate to allow
03:45 - 03:48
the homeowner to keep the house more private small.
03:48 - 03:51
But the sponsor put great importance on this gate being
03:51 - 03:55
installed to his desire, which we did end up installing
03:55 - 03:57
and he was very satisfied.
03:59 - 04:01
Last but not least, we had to clean up the
04:02 - 04:05
entire area by pressure, washing and sweeping up all the
04:05 - 04:07
dirt and remains that were left behind.
04:08 - 04:09
This was much more work than we anticipated.
04:12 - 04:13
Mhm. Okay.
04:14 - 04:16
So every project has risks and we were able to
04:16 - 04:18
mitigate the risk by being prepared.
04:18 - 04:20
In our project meeting, we sat down with the project
04:21 - 04:22
sponsor and then let us know that we may encounter
04:23 - 04:26
gas, electrical or water lines will dig in.
04:26 - 04:28
So what we did to prepare for this was have
04:28 - 04:32
fortis BC come in prior to start and survey the
04:32 - 04:34
ground on top of that.
04:35 - 04:37
We will we notice that we will have to protect
04:37 - 04:40
against the bobcat wheels with all the rocks as the
04:40 - 04:42
pavement can be easily scratched and damaged for good.
04:43 - 04:46
We were successful in avoiding this risk by constantly broom
04:46 - 04:49
in the rock off of the pavement whenever equipment was
04:50 - 04:53
around. And lastly we needed the tools and materials on
04:54 - 04:56
time in order to meet the project sponsor requirements.
04:56 - 04:59
So we used a small portion of our budget and
04:59 - 05:01
ensured we got an early delivery from Bern Co.
05:04 - 05:06
Yeah. Now as we hop slides, we'll look at lessons
05:07 - 05:09
learned. So one of the lessons we learned was just
05:09 - 05:11
never to jump into the work.
05:11 - 05:13
Always have a plan and do your best to execute
05:13 - 05:14
that plan.
05:14 - 05:16
Jumping into the work can cause issues if not thought
05:17 - 05:17
out properly.
05:18 - 05:20
For example, we had to create a new way to
05:20 - 05:21
deal with the retaining wall.
05:23 - 05:26
Also, another lesson would be to try and not try
05:26 - 05:28
and get as much as you can done at the
05:28 - 05:30
start of the project so you have more time to
05:30 - 05:32
deal with issues and focus on quality.
05:33 - 05:36
This allows this also allows time to ensure that the
05:36 - 05:38
project is running smoothly from start to finish.
05:42 - 05:44
Overall, we did not have as many issues come up
05:44 - 05:46
that we weren't able to solve but how we solved
05:47 - 05:49
the smaller ones were keeping the project sponsor up to
05:49 - 05:51
date and aware almost each and every day of the
05:51 - 05:53
project, ensuring our stakeholders were happy.
05:54 - 05:56
We had a budget of $10,000 which was a lump
05:57 - 05:58
sum and we ended up meeting this criteria.
05:59 - 06:01
We also have a timeline of one month and we
06:01 - 06:02
met this deadline as well.
06:02 - 06:06
However, changes By the owner extended our project to a
06:06 - 06:08
total of 35 days, which was approved by this project
06:08 - 06:11
sponsor. All in all, I learned so much from this
06:12 - 06:14
project and enjoyed this class more than any other.
06:14 - 06:16
I've been a part of the planning from start to
06:17 - 06:21
finish along with hands on completing the project, learning the
06:21 - 06:24
ins and outs allowed me to enhance my project project
06:24 - 06:25
management skills greatly.
06:27 - 06:29
Now let's take a look at some of the photos
06:30 - 06:30
from the finished project.
06:47 - 06:49
Thank you so much and I look forward to answering
06:49 - 06:51
any questions that you may have.
