00:01 - 00:04
Hey everybody, my name is Jill Krog and I'm an
00:04 - 00:06
eighth grade science teacher at severe middle school and I
00:07 - 00:08
have enjoyed this class.
00:09 - 00:12
Um I was just gonna go through my presentation really
00:12 - 00:15
quick. I've never used Prezi before, so um I'm just
00:16 - 00:17
kind of played around with it.
00:18 - 00:25
We did a roller coaster lesson for the interdisciplinary planning
00:25 - 00:29
that we did with another teacher in this class and
00:30 - 00:33
that was really interesting to talk to another teacher in
00:33 - 00:36
the district, especially one in a different subject that I'm
00:36 - 00:41
in. Um First of all it was science, math and
00:41 - 00:42
ela all kind of combined.
00:43 - 00:45
We used the vocabulary from science.
00:46 - 00:51
We um we're gonna make a model using things that
00:51 - 00:54
they learned in math and then writing to communicate things
00:54 - 00:58
that they learned about roller coasters, so we're using forces
00:58 - 01:01
in motion is the main over arching topic.
01:02 - 01:04
The students kind of use what they learn about forces
01:04 - 01:08
in motion and Newton's laws and then they use what
01:08 - 01:12
they know about proportion and similarity, which I teach in
01:12 - 01:13
the same classroom as a math teacher and I know
01:13 - 01:15
that's what they're doing right now, a similarity.
01:15 - 01:17
So if they were to try to build a scale
01:17 - 01:22
model of roller coaster that they would produce from a
01:22 - 01:25
project such as this, they would be using things that
01:25 - 01:28
they learned in math and then um Mhm.
01:28 - 01:32
It's kind of based off of a are argumentative paper
01:32 - 01:37
that our science teachers do already about trying to use
01:37 - 01:40
those words that we've been talking about in Newton's laws
01:41 - 01:45
to argue of over which is the most thrilling roller
01:46 - 01:48
coaster. And so the L.
01:48 - 01:52
A teacher that I was paired with talked about informative
01:53 - 01:55
writing where they would do some research and then make
01:56 - 02:00
a descriptive essay about their roller coaster and maybe um
02:00 - 02:06
utilized the um, definitions that they have learned from forces
02:06 - 02:10
in motion and then also the information from math on
02:10 - 02:12
proportion and similarity.
02:14 - 02:18
The next thing is, are my thoughts about stem my
02:18 - 02:21
understanding of stem has changed because now I don't now
02:22 - 02:24
like to be more intentional about working with other disciplines.
02:25 - 02:27
Um, even though they kind of done that before.
02:28 - 02:30
Uh, just maybe keep that in the forefront of my
02:31 - 02:35
mind. I've been challenged because stem and transport discipline disciplinary,
02:36 - 02:39
we'll take a lot of work and planning and um,
02:39 - 02:41
I can't give up because the stakes are high for
02:41 - 02:45
students and for our country, uh that students really um
02:45 - 02:48
take stem into all of their different disciplines.
02:49 - 02:52
Uh, it reinforced the direction of the new science standards
02:53 - 02:55
and that they are correct that we do need to
02:55 - 02:58
make standards more relevant for students when you do more
02:58 - 03:01
project based, more inquiry based learning there.
03:02 - 03:06
Um, applying what I learned here in class, I would
03:06 - 03:08
like to be more intentional about the way I teach
03:08 - 03:08
my students.
03:09 - 03:14
Like I've talked about before, um create this more projects
03:15 - 03:19
and inquiry based and try to work with other um
03:20 - 03:23
people. So with my colleagues begin and continue the conversations
03:23 - 03:27
about stem PBL and trans disciplinary lessons and lesson planning
03:27 - 03:30
and making goals for ourselves and for our students and
03:31 - 03:35
then parents and students applying that there is to talk
03:35 - 03:36
to students more.
03:36 - 03:40
Really liked the idea of maybe sending home things that
03:40 - 03:44
they can do, um take stem education home with them
03:45 - 03:48
and then seek out opportunities to experience stem events in
03:48 - 03:48
the community.
03:49 - 03:52
I know we have really great programs at roper Mountain
03:52 - 03:53
Science Center, etcetera.
03:53 - 03:57
Um, so that would be a good opportunity to maybe
03:57 - 04:00
um, send out maybe a newsletter every so often about
04:00 - 04:02
stem in the ways that they can use it at
04:02 - 04:05
home and then what I still want to know, obviously
04:06 - 04:09
how to find more resources on all this, how, what's
04:09 - 04:14
already out there and um, to get more collaboration from
04:14 - 04:18
colleagues, how to get low achieving students more involved.
04:19 - 04:21
And um, that's it.
04:22 - 04:28
I hope that this answered all of the questions and
04:28 - 04:30
I really enjoyed this class.
