00:00 - 00:02
For my segment three project,
00:02 - 00:06
I chose to research plant based meat and its impact on consumer choices.
00:08 - 00:12
To begin, I started trying to figure out what topic I actually wanted to research.
00:12 - 00:14
I enjoyed reading the Soylent article in
00:14 - 00:16
class because I thought it was interesting.
00:16 - 00:17
So from there on I just started
00:17 - 00:20
start researching related articles to food subsidies.
00:21 - 00:24
My initial reaction was why would people actually want
00:24 - 00:27
to make the choice to switch to food subsidies?
00:27 - 00:30
So I decided so I decided to start researching
00:31 - 00:35
for sources related to consumer spending choices and food subsidies.
00:35 - 00:38
Although I ran into a problem because I found two major general
00:38 - 00:42
articles that never really intrigued me to keep researching this topic.
00:44 - 00:48
After discussing with the McIntyre librarian using the concept map
00:48 - 00:50
that we create in class and discussing with Trevor.
00:50 - 00:54
I eventually came to the conclusion that I will be doing plant based
00:54 - 00:57
meat because I remember that I also have a personal connection to it.
00:57 - 01:01
I also found an article talking about meat replacement and that
01:01 - 01:04
that interested me a lot more than just general food subsidies.
01:06 - 01:09
After going through what seemed like a long process
01:09 - 01:11
of just finding a topic I was interested in,
01:11 - 01:16
I decided I decided to start researching plant based meat.
01:16 - 01:19
The picture on the left is of my mom and her cousin Nick,
01:19 - 01:22
since Nick is very much involved in the plant based meat industry
01:22 - 01:26
interested me because I already had firsthand experience of this food product
01:26 - 01:27
In the summer of 2019.
01:27 - 01:30
My family and I went on vacation to San Francisco where we met
01:30 - 01:33
where we met up with Nick and got to learn all his life.
01:33 - 01:38
And even got a chance to try the burger ourselves because of us doing this.
01:38 - 01:42
Going to the project. I already knew a few general facts about plant based meat.
01:43 - 01:44
Nick went to graduate school at stanford
01:44 - 01:47
University where he and his professor decided to
01:47 - 01:51
try to make a new veggie burger which eventually turned into the Impossible burger.
01:51 - 01:55
Nick has become very successful since then and is now the director of
01:55 - 01:58
international operations for Impossible Foods and was
01:58 - 02:00
the first employee of the company.
02:01 - 02:03
The pictures on the right are of the burger I
02:03 - 02:05
tried in the restaurant where we met up with Nick
02:06 - 02:09
since I already have that personal connection, I wanted to find out more,
02:10 - 02:13
more and more and refresh my mind of why consumers really
02:13 - 02:16
would want to or not want to buy this product.
02:18 - 02:20
Eventually after further researching,
02:20 - 02:23
I decide I started to find more articles that were more related
02:23 - 02:26
to the question I was trying to answer the key word,
02:26 - 02:27
Impossible Foods.
02:27 - 02:31
Help me find many of my articles in my annotated bibliography.
02:32 - 02:33
Oh,
02:34 - 02:39
I also found it helpful why when I searched around the Impossible Foods website,
02:39 - 02:42
it talked about the purpose of this product and what it can not only do for people,
02:42 - 02:44
but also to tremendously help our environment.
02:45 - 02:47
I also found the resource library which led
02:48 - 02:51
me too numerous other sources that tried to help me
02:51 - 02:55
answer my question by finding more and more sources.
02:55 - 02:57
It kept leaving me asking more and more questions.
03:00 - 03:02
So what actually is plant based meat?
03:02 - 03:05
Well is a ground beef looks like ground beef and
03:05 - 03:07
at least in my experience tastes like it too.
03:08 - 03:09
But it's completely made from plants.
03:10 - 03:14
It can be seen today as new technology to fix the big issues in army industry.
03:14 - 03:16
It provides numerous benefits mainly to the
03:16 - 03:18
animals and the whole environment in general.
03:20 - 03:22
But there are also cons to it too.
03:23 - 03:27
They're generally, there are clearly two sides to the questions question
03:28 - 03:31
why consumers would or wouldn't want to purchase plant based meat
03:33 - 03:38
for a person like me, I eat a burger or some type of ground beef at least once a week.
03:38 - 03:41
I came across this sort of calculator from Impossible Foods,
03:41 - 03:43
which I found very interesting.
03:43 - 03:45
It really shows what eating a decent amount
03:45 - 03:48
of ground beef can really do to our environment
03:50 - 03:51
in my research process.
03:51 - 03:53
I also found multiple studies and surveys testing what
03:53 - 03:57
people's opinions are of plant based in red meat.
03:57 - 04:01
These studies opened up many more questions for me because
04:01 - 04:03
I learned multiple pros and cons of both options.
04:05 - 04:09
Here's a short video clip from the video why Bill Gates things,
04:09 - 04:12
Impossible Foods and beyond meat can help fight climate change.
04:12 - 04:17
Bill Gates talks about some of the positives of our artificial artificial meat.
04:18 - 04:19
In this clip.
04:21 - 04:24
Crazy does not allow a video to play while recording.
04:24 - 04:26
So we're just going to have to listen to it
04:30 - 04:32
like impossible or beyond meat.
04:32 - 04:38
Both which uh, I invested in you eat it as well and you like it. Absolutely.
04:38 - 04:43
Uh, you can go to burger king and buy the impossible burger. All right.
04:43 - 04:45
Is it healthier for you or just healthier for the
04:45 - 04:49
it's slightly healthier for you in terms of less cholesterol.
04:50 - 04:55
It's of course, a dramatic reduction in methane emissions.
04:55 - 04:55
You know,
04:55 - 05:00
animal cruelty manure management and the pressure
05:00 - 05:02
that meat consumption puts on land use?
05:07 - 05:07
Yeah,
05:08 - 05:09
if it was possible,
05:09 - 05:11
I would include this entire video because it also
05:11 - 05:13
goes in depth about the consumers in our world
05:14 - 05:16
and why they are starting to buy more plant based meat.
05:17 - 05:19
Here's my annotated bibliography.
05:21 - 05:22
So after doing some research,
05:22 - 05:24
I was still left with more questions that I wanted to answer.
05:24 - 05:26
Are there other countries and places in the world
05:26 - 05:28
that this type of food could be successful at?
05:28 - 05:31
Is this food a long term thing for meat slash non meat eaters?
05:31 - 05:33
Or is it just a temporary thing,
05:33 - 05:36
is cooking a plant based burger more safe than normal meat?
05:36 - 05:39
There are definitely two sides to this question. And that's what makes this
05:39 - 05:40
industry so interesting
