00:01 - 00:03
Hey everyone, I'm back with first chapter friday.
00:03 - 00:05
So this week I'm actually gonna be reading an older
00:06 - 00:09
text. Um You maybe you've seen this on my classroom
00:09 - 00:11
library and to and not reading that because it's an
00:11 - 00:11
old one.
00:12 - 00:14
Um And so sometimes I have a tendency of doing
00:15 - 00:15
that as well.
00:15 - 00:17
I like to read more of the current books books
00:18 - 00:20
I'm familiar with, But I can say that I read
00:21 - 00:23
this book in 6th grade because my teacher made me
00:23 - 00:25
read it and I still liked it even though I
00:25 - 00:25
was resistant.
00:26 - 00:27
Like my teacher told me to read it, I don't
00:28 - 00:31
want to read it type of thing, but secretly until
00:31 - 00:33
my teacher this, but I actually liked it.
00:33 - 00:35
Um And the other cool thing is I know some
00:35 - 00:37
of you really like to read a book and watch
00:37 - 00:38
a movie or watch a movie then read the book.
00:39 - 00:40
There's actually a movie on this book as well.
00:42 - 00:42
It's called The Outsiders.
00:43 - 00:44
It's written by S.
00:44 - 00:49
E. Hinton and it was written in like 1919 67.
00:50 - 00:52
So it is an older book that's actually the year
00:52 - 00:53
my dad was born.
00:53 - 00:55
Um Fun fact, so it's older.
00:56 - 00:59
Um but it's actually really relevant to today and I
00:59 - 01:02
think as your, you know, if you decide to read
01:02 - 01:05
it, you might be able to pick up some things
01:05 - 01:07
that are similar to our world today.
01:08 - 01:11
Um even though some of its different, it still could
01:12 - 01:14
be like similar to what we see in our world
01:14 - 01:16
today. So I think that part is really cool and
01:16 - 01:19
even though it's an older book, it still makes it
01:19 - 01:20
kind of relevant to today.
01:21 - 01:23
Another cool thing before I start reading is my book
01:24 - 01:25
cover looks like this, which is the picture I have
01:26 - 01:26
on the screen.
01:26 - 01:29
Um But this book is an older book.
01:29 - 01:31
They've actually came up with lots of different covers, but
01:31 - 01:33
they're all the same book that happens a lot.
01:34 - 01:35
So let me show you quickly.
01:36 - 01:38
Um some of the other cover options you might see
01:38 - 01:39
for this book.
01:42 - 01:43
Yeah, okay.
01:45 - 01:46
I think that's my favourite one.
01:46 - 01:47
I think that one is cool.
01:48 - 01:48
I like the colors.
01:51 - 02:00
Mhm. There's so many and lastly I have the I
02:00 - 02:01
believe this is what it looks like on the DVD
02:02 - 02:03
case. So, I put that on there to those are
02:03 - 02:05
the actors and stuff that play each of the characters
02:06 - 02:07
in this book.
02:09 - 02:10
I'm gonna go with this one.
02:10 - 02:11
All right.
02:11 - 02:14
So, it says a heroic story of friendship and belonging
02:14 - 02:17
ponyboy can count on his brothers and on his friends,
02:18 - 02:20
but not on much else besides trouble with the social
02:21 - 02:24
as a vicious gang of rich kids whose idea of
02:24 - 02:28
a good time is beating up greasers like ponyboy at
02:28 - 02:30
least he knows what to expect until the night.
02:30 - 02:32
Someone takes things too far.
02:33 - 02:38
Yeah. Chapter one when I stepped out into the bright
02:38 - 02:40
sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had
02:40 - 02:43
only two things on my mind, paul Newman and a
02:43 - 02:43
ride home.
02:44 - 02:46
I was wishing I looked like paul Newman, he looks
02:47 - 02:49
tough and I don't, but I guess my own looks
02:50 - 02:50
aren't so bad.
02:50 - 02:53
I have light brown, almost red hair and greenish grey
02:54 - 02:56
eyes. I wish they were more gray because I hate
02:57 - 02:59
most guys that have green eyes, but I have to
02:59 - 03:00
be content with what I have.
03:01 - 03:03
My hair is longer than a lot of boys where
03:03 - 03:05
they're squared off and back and long at the front
03:06 - 03:09
and sides, but I'm a greaser and most of my
03:09 - 03:11
neighborhood rarely bothers to get a haircut.
03:12 - 03:16
Besides I look better with long hair and a long
03:16 - 03:19
walk home and no company, but I usually loan it
03:19 - 03:22
anyway for no reason except that I like to watch
03:23 - 03:25
movies undisturbed so I can get into them and live
03:26 - 03:26
them with the actors.
03:27 - 03:29
When I see a movie with someone, it's kind of
03:29 - 03:32
uncomfortable like having someone read your book over your shoulder.
03:33 - 03:34
I'm different that way.
03:34 - 03:37
I mean my second older oldest brother, Soda who is
03:37 - 03:41
16 going on 17, never cracks the book at all.
03:41 - 03:43
And my oldest brother, Darryl, who we all call dairy,
03:44 - 03:46
works too long and hard to be interested in a
03:47 - 03:48
story or drawing a picture.
03:49 - 03:51
So I'm not like them and nobody in our gang
03:51 - 03:55
digs movies and books the way I do for a
03:55 - 03:55
while there.
03:55 - 03:57
I thought I was the only person in the world
03:57 - 03:57
that did.
03:58 - 04:02
So I loaned it, soda tries to understand at least
04:03 - 04:04
which is more than dairy does.
04:04 - 04:06
But then soda is different from anybody.
04:06 - 04:11
He understands everything Almost like he's never hollering at me
04:12 - 04:14
all the time, the way dairy is or treating me
04:14 - 04:15
as if I was six instead of 14.
04:17 - 04:19
I love soda more than I've ever loved anyone.
04:19 - 04:22
Even mom and dad, he's always happy go lucky and
04:22 - 04:25
grinning while dairies hard and firm and rarely grins at
04:26 - 04:29
all. But then And dairy has gone through a lot
04:29 - 04:30
in his 20 years.
04:30 - 04:34
Growing up too fast, soda pop will never know soda
04:35 - 04:36
pop will never grow up at all.
04:37 - 04:38
I don't know which way is the best.
04:39 - 04:40
I'll find out one of these days.
04:41 - 04:43
Anyway, I went on walking home thinking about the movie
04:44 - 04:46
and then suddenly wishing I had some company greasers can't
04:47 - 04:50
walk, I had some company greasers can't walk alone too
04:50 - 04:53
much or they'll get jumped or someone will come by
04:53 - 04:57
and scream Greece er at them, which doesn't make you
04:57 - 04:58
feel too hot if you know what I mean.
04:59 - 05:01
We get jumped by the social as I'm not sure
05:02 - 05:04
how you spell it, but it's the abbreviation for the
05:04 - 05:06
socials, The jet set.
05:06 - 05:07
The Westside rich kids.
05:08 - 05:11
It's like the term greaser, which is used to class
05:11 - 05:15
all of us boys on the east side were poorer
05:15 - 05:16
than the, so she's in the middle class.
05:17 - 05:20
I reckon we're wild or to not like the socialists
05:20 - 05:22
who jumped greasers and wreck houses and throw beer blasts
05:23 - 05:26
for kicks and get editorials in the paper for being
05:26 - 05:28
a public disgrace one day and an asset to society.
05:29 - 05:33
The next greasers are almost like hoods, we steal things
05:34 - 05:36
and drive up souped up cars and hold up gas
05:36 - 05:38
stations and have a gang fight once in a while.
05:39 - 05:41
I don't mean I do things like that, dairy would
05:41 - 05:43
kill me if I got to get into trouble with
05:43 - 05:46
the police since mom and dad were killed in an
05:46 - 05:46
auto wreck.
05:47 - 05:48
The three of us get to stay together only as
05:48 - 05:49
long as we behave.
05:50 - 05:51
So soda and I stay out of trouble as much
05:52 - 05:54
as we can and we're careful not to get caught
05:54 - 05:54
when we can't.
05:55 - 05:57
I only mean that most greases do things like that,
05:58 - 06:00
just like we wear hair long and dressed in blue
06:00 - 06:03
jeans and t shirts or leave our shirttails out and
06:04 - 06:06
what wear leather jackets and tennis shoes or boots.
06:07 - 06:08
I'm not saying that either.
06:08 - 06:10
So she's or Greece's greasers are better.
06:10 - 06:12
That's just the way things are.
06:12 - 06:14
I could have waited to go to the movies until
06:14 - 06:16
dairy or soda pop got off of work.
06:18 - 06:20
They would have gone with me or driven me there
06:20 - 06:24
or walked along, although soda just can't sit still long
06:24 - 06:26
enough to enjoy a movie and they bore dairy to
06:26 - 06:30
death jerry thinks his life is enough without inspecting other
06:30 - 06:32
people's or I could have gotten one of the gang
06:33 - 06:35
to come along one of the four boys dairy and
06:35 - 06:37
soda and I have grown up with and considered family.
06:38 - 06:40
We're almost as close as brothers when we grow up
06:41 - 06:44
in a tight knit, tight knit neighborhood like ours, you
06:44 - 06:45
get to know each other real well.
06:46 - 06:47
I had thought about it.
06:47 - 06:49
I could have called dairy and he would have come
06:49 - 06:52
by on his way home and picked me up or
06:52 - 06:55
two bit Matthews, one of our gang would have come
06:55 - 06:56
to get me in this car if I had asked
06:57 - 06:59
him, but sometimes I just don't use my head.
07:00 - 07:02
It tries my brother dairy nuts when I do stuff
07:03 - 07:04
like that because I'm supposed to be smart.
07:05 - 07:06
I make good grades and I have a high Q
07:07 - 07:10
and everything, but I don't use my head besides I
07:10 - 07:10
like walking.
07:12 - 07:14
I about decided I didn't like it so much though
07:14 - 07:18
when I spotted the red corvette trailing me, I was
07:18 - 07:19
almost two blocks from home then.
07:19 - 07:21
So I started walking a little faster.
07:22 - 07:24
I had never been jumped, but I had seen johnny
07:24 - 07:26
after four, so she's got a hold of him and
07:26 - 07:29
it was, pet is pretty, it wasn't pretty johnny was
07:29 - 07:32
scared of his own shadow after that johnny was 16
07:33 - 07:35
then I knew it wasn't any use though the fast
07:35 - 07:38
walking. I mean even before the Corvair pulled up beside
07:38 - 07:39
me and five so she's got out.
07:40 - 07:41
I got pretty scared.
07:42 - 07:44
I'm kind of small for 14 even though I have
07:44 - 07:46
a good build and those guys were bigger than me.
07:46 - 07:49
I automatically hitched my thumbs in my jeans and slouched,
07:49 - 07:51
wondering if I could get away if I could make
07:51 - 07:52
a break for it.
07:53 - 07:55
I remember Johnny, his face all cut up and bruised
07:55 - 07:57
and I remembered how he had cried when we found
07:57 - 08:01
him. Have conscious in the corner lot, johnny had an
08:01 - 08:04
awful rough at home, took a lot to make him
08:04 - 08:09
cry. I was sweating something fierce, although I was cold.
08:09 - 08:11
I could feel my palms getting clammy in the perspiration
08:13 - 08:13
running down my back.
08:14 - 08:17
I get like that when I'm real scared I glanced
08:17 - 08:20
around for a pop bottle or stick or something steve
08:20 - 08:23
Randall, so does best buddy had once held off four
08:23 - 08:26
guys with a busted pop bottle, but there was nothing.
08:27 - 08:28
So I stood there like a bump on a log
08:28 - 08:29
while they surrounded me.
08:30 - 08:31
I don't use my head.
08:32 - 08:36
They walk around slowly, silently smiling.
08:36 - 08:39
Hey, Greece one set an over friendly voice.
08:40 - 08:41
We're gonna do you a favor greaser.
08:42 - 08:45
We're going to cut off all that long greasy hair
08:46 - 08:47
he had on a madras shirt.
08:48 - 08:50
I can still see it blue.
08:51 - 08:53
One of them laughed then cussed me out in a
08:53 - 08:54
low voice.
08:54 - 08:56
I couldn't think of anything to say.
08:56 - 08:58
There just isn't a whole lot, you can say well
08:58 - 09:01
waiting to get mugged, so I kept my mouth shut,
09:02 - 09:03
need a haircut greaser.
09:04 - 09:06
The medium sized blonde pulled a knife out of his
09:06 - 09:07
back pocket and flip the blade open.
09:08 - 09:10
I finally thought of something to say, No.
09:11 - 09:12
I was backing up away from the knife.
09:13 - 09:14
Of course I backed right into one of them.
09:15 - 09:18
It they had me down in a second, then my
09:18 - 09:20
arms and legs pinned down and one of them was
09:20 - 09:22
sitting on my chest, with his knees on my elbows.
09:22 - 09:24
And if you don't think that hurts, you're crazy.
09:25 - 09:28
I could smell english, leather, shaving lotion and stale tobacco
09:29 - 09:31
and I wondered foolishly if I would suffocate before they
09:32 - 09:32
did anything.
09:33 - 09:34
I was scared so bad.
09:34 - 09:35
I was wishing I would.
09:36 - 09:38
I thought to get loose and almost did for a
09:38 - 09:40
second. Then they tightened up on me and the one
09:40 - 09:43
on my chest slugged me a couple of times, so
09:43 - 09:45
I lay still swearing at them between gasps.
09:47 - 09:48
It blade was held against my throat.
09:49 - 09:51
How do you like that haircut to begin?
09:51 - 09:52
Just below the chin.
09:53 - 09:54
It occurred to me then they could kill me.
09:55 - 09:55
I went wild.
09:56 - 09:57
I started screaming for soda dairy.
09:58 - 10:01
Anyone. Someone put his hand over my mouth and I
10:01 - 10:03
bit as hard as I could, tasting the blood running
10:03 - 10:04
through my teeth.
10:05 - 10:08
I heard a muttered muttered curse and got slugged again
10:08 - 10:12
and they were stuffing, stuffing a handkerchief in my mouth.
10:12 - 10:14
One of them kept saying, shut him up for pete's
10:15 - 10:15
sake, shut him up.
10:16 - 10:18
Then there were shouts and the pounding of feet and
10:18 - 10:20
the socials jumped up and left me lying there gasping,
10:22 - 10:24
I lay there and wondered what in the world was
10:24 - 10:27
happening. People were jumping over me and running by me
10:27 - 10:29
and I was two days to figure it out.
10:30 - 10:32
Then someone had me under the armpits and was hauling
10:32 - 10:33
me to my feet.
10:33 - 10:34
It was dairy.
10:35 - 10:35
Are you all right ponyboy?
10:36 - 10:39
He was shaking me and I wish he'd stop and
10:39 - 10:39
was dizzy enough.
10:40 - 10:42
Anyway, I could tell it was scary though, partly because
10:43 - 10:45
of the voice and partly because there is always rough
10:45 - 10:46
with me without meaning to be.
10:47 - 10:49
I'm okay, quit shaking me dairy.
10:49 - 10:49
I'm okay.
10:51 - 10:51
He stopped instantly.
10:52 - 10:52
I'm sorry.
10:53 - 10:56
He wasn't really dairy isn't ever sorry for anything he
10:56 - 10:58
does. It seems funny to me that he should look
10:58 - 11:01
just exactly like my father and act exactly the opposite
11:02 - 11:02
from him.
11:03 - 11:05
My father was only 40 when he died and he
11:05 - 11:07
looked 25 and a lot of people thought dairy and
11:07 - 11:10
dad were brothers instead of father, and son, but they
11:10 - 11:11
only looked alike.
11:11 - 11:14
My father was never rough with anyone without meaning to
11:14 - 11:18
be. And Darius 6ft 2 and broad shouldered and muscular.
11:19 - 11:21
He has dark brown hair that kicks out in front
11:21 - 11:25
and a slight cowlick in the back, just like dad.
11:26 - 11:27
My Dory's eyes on his own.
11:27 - 11:29
He's got eyes that are like two pieces of pale
11:30 - 11:30
blue green ice.
11:31 - 11:33
They've got a determined set to them like the rest
11:33 - 11:33
of them.
11:34 - 11:37
He looks older than 20, tough, cool and smart.
11:38 - 11:40
He'd be real handsome if his eyes weren't so cold,
11:41 - 11:44
he doesn't understand anything that is not playing hard fact,
11:44 - 11:45
but he uses his head.
11:46 - 11:48
I sat down again rubbing my cheek where I'd been
11:48 - 11:51
slugged the most dairy, jammed his fist in his pockets.
11:52 - 11:53
Didn't hurt you too bad, did they?
11:54 - 11:54
They did.
11:55 - 11:57
I was smarting and aching and my chest was sore
11:57 - 11:59
and I was so nervous, my hands were shaking and
11:59 - 12:02
I wanted to start bawling, but you just don't say
12:02 - 12:02
that to dairy.
12:03 - 12:06
I'm okay, soda pop came loping back by then.
12:07 - 12:08
I figured that all the noise I had heard was
12:09 - 12:11
the game coming to rescue me and dropped down beside
12:12 - 12:13
me examining my head.
12:13 - 12:15
You got caught up a little hump ponyboy.
12:16 - 12:17
I only looked at him blankly.
12:17 - 12:17
I didn't.
12:18 - 12:20
He pulled out a handkerchief what the end of it
12:20 - 12:22
with his tongue and press it gently against the side
12:22 - 12:22
of my head.
12:23 - 12:24
You're bleeding like a stuck pig.
12:25 - 12:25
I am.
12:26 - 12:28
Look, you showed me the handkerchief reddened as if by
12:29 - 12:30
magic. Did they pull blade on you?
12:31 - 12:33
I remember the voice need a haircut greaser.
12:35 - 12:36
The blade must have slipped while he was trying to
12:36 - 12:37
shut me up.
12:38 - 12:41
Yeah, so does handsomer than anyone else I know, not
12:41 - 12:44
like dairy, so does movie star kind of handsome.
12:45 - 12:46
The kind that people stop on the street to watch
12:47 - 12:47
go by.
12:48 - 12:49
He's not as tall as dairy and he's a little
12:50 - 12:53
slimmer, but he is a finely drawn, sensitive faces somehow
12:53 - 12:56
manages to be reckless and thoughtful at the same time.
12:57 - 13:00
He's got dark gold hair that he comes back long
13:00 - 13:03
and silky and straight and in the summer the sun
13:03 - 13:06
bleaches head to a shining wheat gold.
13:07 - 13:11
His eyes are dark brown, lively, dancing, recklessly, laughing eyes
13:11 - 13:12
that can be gentle and sympathetic.
13:13 - 13:16
One moment in blazing with anger the next he has
13:16 - 13:18
dad's eyes, but soda is one of a kind, you
13:18 - 13:20
can get drunk and a drag race or dancing without
13:21 - 13:23
ever getting your alcohol in our neighborhood.
13:23 - 13:25
It's rare to find a kid who doesn't drink once
13:25 - 13:28
in a while, but soda never touches a drop and
13:28 - 13:33
he doesn't need to, he gets drunk on just plain
13:33 - 13:34
living and he understands everybody.
13:35 - 13:37
He looked at me more coarsely closely.
13:37 - 13:39
I looked away hurriedly because if you want to know
13:39 - 13:41
the truth, I was starting to ball.
13:41 - 13:44
I knew I was as white as I felt and
13:44 - 13:46
I was shaking like a leaf so to put his
13:46 - 13:47
hand on my shoulder.
13:47 - 13:49
Easy pony boy, they ain't gonna hurt you no more.
13:50 - 13:52
I know, I said, but the ground began to blur
13:52 - 13:55
and I felt hot tears running down my cheeks.
13:56 - 13:57
I brushed them away impatiently.
13:57 - 13:58
I'm just a little spooked.
13:58 - 13:59
That's all.
14:00 - 14:01
I drew quivering breath and quit crying.
14:02 - 14:04
You just don't cry in front of dairy, not unless
14:04 - 14:06
you're hurt like johnny had been the day we found
14:06 - 14:08
him in the vacant lot compared to johnny, I wasn't
14:09 - 14:12
hurt at all, so to rub my hair, you're an
14:12 - 14:12
okay kid pony.
14:13 - 14:15
I had to grin at him so they can make
14:15 - 14:16
you grant no matter what.
14:16 - 14:18
I guess, it's because he's always grinning so much himself.
14:19 - 14:22
You're crazy soda out of your mind, dairy looked as
14:22 - 14:24
if he'd like to knock out, knock our heads together,
14:25 - 14:25
you're both nuts.
14:26 - 14:29
So to merely cocked one eyebrow a trick he picked
14:30 - 14:30
up from two bit.
14:31 - 14:33
It seems to run in this family and I don't
14:33 - 14:35
have time to continue reading the rest of the chapter
14:35 - 14:36
because it's kind of long.
14:36 - 14:40
Um, but again, I hope that You can see how
14:40 - 14:42
this text, even though it's a book that was written
14:43 - 14:46
in 1967, it's still relevant to today's world.
14:46 - 14:48
Um, and if this is one that you want to
14:48 - 14:50
check out, I do have copies of it in my
14:50 - 14:51
library, have a great day.
14:51 - 14:51
